What a great job they do!
Kensington District Cricket Club would like to pass on its condolences to the Bowley family, after the passing of Betty.
From Club Secretary, Tony Rice:
"Betty Bowley died on 21 June at the age of 97.
Betty was the widow of Bruce and the mother of Ian. The Bowley family's association with the Club covers the entire existence of the Club, as Len Bowley (Bruce's father) was playing for the Club when it entered the SACA A Grade competition in 1923. Both Bruce and Ian played for and coached the Club for many years, Bruce was president of the Club for more than 15 years, and both were elected as life members (Bruce in 1976 and Ian in 1999).
Betty was a hard worker for, and wonderful supporter of, the Club throughout both Bruce's and Ian's direct involvement with the Club. She was a great friend to players of all ages, and an important source of help and inspiration not only to players, but also to players' wives and partners.
Even after Bruce's death in May 2014, Betty would quite often be seen watching a match being played on Parkinson Oval (perhaps more often from a car in recent years), as she maintained her interest in the Club's teams.
Betty's interest in sport was not confined to our Club. She and Bruce (with others) founded the Burnside Hockey Club in 1949, and Betty was the motivating force behind the establishment of the Burnside Women's Hockey Club in 1969. Betty was the inaugural president of the Burnside Women's Hockey Club and later became president of the Women's Hockey Association of SA. Betty was a life member of the Burnside Hockey Club (1981) and of Hockey SA (1993).
To all those who knew Betty well, she was the most friendly, delightful and loyal person one could ever have the privilege to meet."
Further History
The Bowley name is synonymous with Kensington. At our Adelaide Oval function in 2023, Bruce and Ian were named co-coaches of Kensington's Team of the Century.
Sadly Bruce passed away in 2014. Here is the release from the Club at the time:
"Bruce was a great player for the club, scoring over 3000 A Grade runs and taking over 100 wickets.
Bruceโs impact on the club went beyond his playing days and he took over the Presidency after Jim Grose retired. David Lovell describes Bruce as โan absolute gentleman who was a great player, President and supporter of the Brownsโ while Gary Slack remembers Bruce as the first coach he and brother Greg had at the club when they were juniors.
Neil Dansie remembers playing state cricket alongside Bruce, with Bruce opening the batting and the bowling. He was also an exceptional hockey player.
The Bowley name is one of the most famous in our history. Before Bruce there was Len Bowley who made over 4000 runs for the club and later Bruceโs son Ian went on to play A Grade cricket and also coach the club to three consecutive club championships."
The Club's thoughts are with Ian and the family.
Congratulations to Lucy Lowry and Indira Panelli on their selection in the State U15 Girls team!
The national championships are being held in Mackay from August 31 to September 6.
The team is being coached by our very own, Sarah Lowe!
The 15 years and under girls cricket state team has been selected to compete at the School Sport Australia Championships in Mackay later this year.
Congratulations to all players selected!

She has already represented South Australia, at the Under 19 National Championships in December last year, taking six wickets."

HAVE YOUR SAY ON CLUBROOM LEASE: Kensington Gardens Reserve is the largest recreational reserve within the City of Burnside, and is home to various sporting clubs and groups including cricket, rugby, lawn bowls and tennis. The existing clubrooms, utilised by Kensington District Cricket Club (KDCC) and Burnside Rugby Union Club (BRUC), were constructed in 1950 and 1970 respectively. Despite some life left in them, these buildings are in sub-optimal condition and lack modern amenities.
Previously, a Report was presented to Council by the KDCC and BRUC seeking Councilโs support to redevelop the clubrooms at Kensington Gardens Reserve, with the aim to modernise existing facilities to meet current standards and community needs.
In March 2024, the clubs presented an updated proposal to Council where they identified that they have secured 68.3% of the necessary funds through Federal and State Government grants, as well as the clubs own funds. The proposal sought for Council to contribute up to 31.7% of the remaining cost, which Council resolved to do.
The clubs are also seeking a proposed lease of the redeveloped clubrooms on the same terms as the current leases, with a 5 x 5 year option (up to 25 years in total). You can now provide your thoughts about the proposed lease until Friday 5 July at https://engage.burnside.sa.gov.au/proposed-new-lease-over-the-kensington-district-cricket-club-and-burnside-rugby-union-club-clubrooms
