We talk a lot about "good fat" or "health fat" and not so much about the BAD FATS which include trans fats and saturated fats. Let's start by talking about trans fats and what they are.

Trans fats are typically found in hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils, which are chemically altered to remain solid at room temperature. I guess I just gave away the answer. Bacon fat and coconut oil, while high in saturated fats, do not contain trans fats unless they have been hydrogenated. The worst part is that in Australia there is no labeling requirement to let you know they are there. You will often find them in deep fried foods so every time you are eating deep fried chips and nuggets from you favourite take away you are exposed to trans fats. High exposure as a kid brings forward the negative consequences of consuming these fats. This may be why we are seeing younger and younger people having heart attacks and strokes

What is so bad about trans fats

1 Increase in LDL Cholesterol: Trans fats raise the levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which is often referred to as "bad" cholesterol. High levels of LDL cholesterol can lead to the buildup of fatty deposits in arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke

2 Inflammation: Trans fats have been linked to increased inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation is associated with many serious health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers

3 Insulin Resistance: Consuming trans fats can lead to insulin resistance, a condition where the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin. This can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Combine this with exposure to saturated fats and this is a metabolic nightmare. No wonder everyone is struggling to lose weight

4 Obesity: Trans fats contribute to weight gain and obesity. They can be found in many processed and fried foods that are high in calories and low in nutritional value

5 Negative Impact on Overall Health: Regular consumption of trans fats is associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, and other chronic health issues

These Three Documentaries Changed Everything For Me

I love to learn and I truly believe that in order to be at the top of my game as a Naturopath, I need to continually evolve and improve. Over the years, three documentaries have really stood out to me and transformed my beliefs on the impact of food on health and of course I researched the evidence to back them up.

Food Matters: This was the first documentary that truly resonated with me. It helped me realise my destiny and purpose as a Naturopath. It reinforced why I chose this path in the first place and deepened my commitment to holistic health.

Food Inc.: This documentary taught me the critical importance of understanding where our food comes from. It opened my eyes to the significance of food sources and the need for greater awareness and responsibility in our food choices.

Forks Over Knives: This was the game changer for me. It answered all the questions I had been struggling with and inspired me to provide the help that so many people are searching for but can't find anywhere else. It solidified my belief in the profound connection between diet and health.

Although I LOVE what I do during the week as a naturopath and business owner, the weekend is my time to RELAX and UNWIND and catch up on all the things I didn’t get done over the week but relaxation, self-care, and family time are my priorities.

My top 3 favourite weekend activities are:

1. Family Quality Time: We love engaging in activities that promote health and bonding, like going to the beach and watching the sunrise.

2. Recipe Creating: I enjoy creating new recipes and prepping food. This is relaxation for me. My favourite part is going to the markets.

3. Catching Up: I love catching up with my community. Having a chat after church. Checking in with friends. This is my self care.

5 Things That are Working for Me Right Now as a Naturopath

Ever feel like you're stuck in a rut, not making progress on your health, personal, or business goals? It can feel like everything is at a standstill, or worse, like you're moving backwards.

I've been there many times, and through those moments, I've learned what works for me to get back on track:

Get Outside Daily: Even just a few minutes in fresh air can significantly boost my energy and mood. Nature has a healing power that instantly lifts my spirits and the sunshine wakes me up.

Make a Small To-Do List: I create a list of tasks that can be completed in 10 minutes or less. It might be making a phone call, cleaning a small area (set a timer for 15 mins and see how much you can get done in that time, you’ll be surprised), or revisit my goals and sometimes rewrite them, I start by asking β€œwhat do I want my life to be”. Crossing off these small tasks increases my dopamine and energises me and gives me a sense of accomplishment. This makes me want to keep going.

Prioritise Quick Nutrition: I ensure I have easy, healthy snacks readily available. This keeps me from resorting to unhealthy food options and helps maintain my energy levels throughout the day. I actually plan this well in advance because I know that I am going to have these types of days where I don't want to do anything (even cook) so I plan for this.

Engage with Like-Minded People: I surround myself with people who share my life goals. Whether it's engaging with friends, listening to a podcast, or reading a book by one of my mentors, their energy is infectious and leaves me inspired. This always gets me back on track. I literally did this yesterday with one of my close friends (you know who you are surfer girl). I asked her straight out, how do I get past this funk? And bless her soul without any judgement she answered my question and changed my day.

Move My Body to Music: Dancing to my favourite music is something I love, and it always lifts my mood, no matter how I'm feeling. Our house lives in the world of 80s music most of the time. After all it was the best decade.
