Sony Electronics Launches Two New 4K Handheld Professional Camcorders

“Sony Electronics is set to release two new 4K handheld camcorders – the NXCAM™ HXR-NX800, and XDCAM™ PXW-Z200 with SDI and MXF wrapper.
The cameras come with a BIONZ XR™ image processing engine and a specialised AI-processing unit for highly accurate, real-time recognition, tracking, and framing of subjects. Further, the HXR-NX800 and PXW-Z200’s 1.0-inch-type Exmor RS™ CMOS stacked sensor provides high sensitivity and low-noise capability.
An Electronic Variable ND Filter enables users to toggle seamlessly between 1/4 to 1/128 density.
They also have the option to enable auto-ND, which allows the camera to maintain an optimised exposure without the user having to adjust settings. The devices include two rings for focus and zoom and two dials for IRIS/ND Variable are located side-by-side. Twelve assignable buttons provide further customisation.
The two new cameras are equipped with Sony’s G Lens™, featuring a newly designed optical 20x power zoom that covers 24mm wide-angle to 480mm telephoto and a maximum aperture of F2.8-F4.5. The models can achieve 30x (4K) and 40x (HD) zoom with no noise using Sony’s Clear Image Zoom technology.
Active mode combines electronic correction with optical image stabilisation to provide smoother imagery on the go.
As part of the design, the cameras incorporate a foldable viewfinder, a removable microphone holder, and a foldable 3.5-inch LCD monitor that allows users to check images and focus in bright environments. The new models are compact and can be folded up for further ease of storage and portability.
The HXR-NX800 and PXW-Z200 provide integration with Sony’s camera portfolio. Presets such as S-Cinetone™, ITU709, 709tone, HLG Live, HLG Mild, and HLG Natural can be easily adjusted to colour match the footage captured on Sony’s other broadcast, Cinema Line, and AlphaTM cameras.
The new cameras also support a wide variety of recording formats including XAVC HS, XAVC S, XAVC SI, and XAVC HS Proxy (up to 16 Mbps).”

Brothers John and Dave started their screenwriting careers as writers for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, then departed after six seasons to spearhead The Mick. Now, the brothers are flexing their comedy muscles in a high school comedy feature, Incoming, which pays homage to raunchy teen films like Superbad and American Pie.

“When it comes to character development, you can often feel overwhelmed by the many rules, directives, and guidelines offered to you by books, lessons, classes, lectures, and interviews. While the tools provided can help you find your characters, the process of character development is actually easier than you think, and it all starts with conflict and character traits.
A simple two-step process involves:
1. Creating a character that will struggle with the core conflict presented in the premise.
2. Adding character traits that either help or hinder them in overcoming the conflict at hand.
When you then merge those two elements with the many conflicts they are forced to face within the conflict of the story, character development and depth will take on a life of their own.

With that in mind, here we take 101 basic personality traits that you can turn into traits that define the characters within your story. Character depths and arcs are presented when you pit those traits against the conflict of the story, and either have your characters succumb to the conflict because of them, grow past them for compelling character arcs, or embrace them to overcome any conflict that comes their way.”

Shadowbox Studios primed to take over development of Yatala screen studio on the Gold Coast

"The City of Gold Coast will begin negotiating with Shadowbox Studios about developing and operating the Yatala screen studio after the US-based company was named the preferred proponent for the site.
Founded in 2017, Shadowbox Studios, formerly Blackhall Studios, operates soundstage campuses in Atlanta and the United Kingdom, with further active developments in the Atlanta, London, and Los Angeles metro areas.
The Gold Coast proposal features the construction of up to 10 sound stages, workshops, office spaces, a backlot, and training facilities, on a 22ha site at 396 Stanmore Road.
Phase one includes up to six sound stages, a workshop, an office building, a backlot, and an outdoor filming space expected to be operational in 2028. A second phase, to be undertaken in response to market demand, may include an additional 4 sound stages, a workshop, and office space.
The City of Gold Coast estimates the new film studio could contribute approximately $195 million towards the economy each year once complete, with 1000 jobs to be generated during construction and 3400 direct and indirect jobs once both phases are operational."

Novel autofocus prime lens lets users swap out optical elements

“Though smartphone cameras can snap stunning images, most pros will haul a dedicated camera to assignments. Space inside camera bags is at a premium, but a nifty lens from Samyang could lighten the load by allowing optical elements to be swapped out.
If your shoot requires a selection of different focal lengths from your prime lens, then you have to carry a bunch of different lenses. Samyang's Remaster Slim setup changes that by allowing the photographer to simply remove one central optics module and replace it with another – a magnetic mount system keeps everything in place between swaps.
At launch, the company is offering 21-mm, 28-mm and 32-mm optical modules but all sport the same f/2.8 aperture. The lens is compatible with Sony E-mount cameras only at the moment, with the lens housing jutting out some 2 cm (0.8 in) from the camera body and weighing in at less than 80 g (2.8 oz). Autofocus is also cooked in, though there is an AF/MF switch and slim manual focus ring included too.”

Screen Queensland Secures the State’s Largest-ever Television Series
“Queensland, Australia has become home of the ‘Monsterverse’ with production commencing on the second season of Legendary Entertainment’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Secured by Screen Queensland through the Queensland Government’s Production Attraction Strategy, the series will generate more than $115 million for the Queensland economy, making it the largest-ever series to be filmed in the sunshine state.
The Legendary Entertainment production further cements Screen Queensland’s close relationship with Legendary following a recent slate of feature films made in Queensland—Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, Godzilla vs. Kong and Kong: Skull Island.
Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said that “it’s been a blockbuster year for screen production in Queensland and the Miles Government is proud to welcome this significant series to the sunshine state."

Screen Australia Announces $3 Million for 13 Documentaries

"Screen Australia has announced 11 documentaries through the Producer Program and two through the Commissioned Program that will share in $3 million of production funding.
Among the projects is SBS docuseries The Secret DNA of Us, discovering hidden collective DNA throughout Australian neighbourhoods; We Are Jeni, documenting Jeni Hayes and her network of 2,500 alternative personalities’ mission to seek justice; Mockbuster, following writer/director Anthony Frith, tasked by notorious US production house, The Asylum to create a feature-length mockbuster; and Yurlu | Country following Banjima man Maitland Parker as he fights for his scarred lands to be rehabilitated.
Screen Australia Head of Documentary Richard Huddleston said, “I am thrilled that this funding will support a rich array of documentary producers; from emerging and established filmmakers to internationally award-winning artists and our leading investigative journalists. The mix of genres, the subjects they explore as well as the creative approaches are equally rich and will appeal to a diverse range of Australian and international audiences.”
This announcement includes the remainder of projects funded in the 2023/24 financial year during which Screen Australia funded $12.4 million across 100+ projects for production, development and initiatives, including Fresh Cuts with AIDC. This represented 51% of all documentary applications received in 2023-2024.
