Opening today: Promised Land!
Visual artist Serana Angelista adds context to photographs from their family archive using natural materials such as cowrie shells. The artist shifts the viewer’s gaze from the face of the person portrayed to the circumstances in which they lived and the emotions and associations this evokes. Promised Land addresses the reliability of institutional and living archives and is part of the exhibition curated by Gyonne Zafira in Rotterdam and Aruba, How Do We Remember? The exhibition, which was originally developed on the occasion of the Leipzig Book Fair 2024, is a collaboration between the Nieuwe Instituut and the Dutch graphic design programme at Werkplaats Typografie, the independent Leipzig bookshop MZIN, and the System Design class at the Academy of Fine Arts (HGB) in Leipzig.

During this week, there are all kinds of events on the calendar. Here is a short overview!

🇵🇸 Design for Change #1: Graphic Design for Gaza
Drawing on the visual language, symbolism and social impact of posters and other media, designers Sana Iqbal, Rasha Dakkak and Anja Groten discuss how graphic design can be used as a means of protest. Aric Chen, director of the Nieuwe Instituut, moderates the discussion. Limestone Bookshop presents a temporary display table with publications related to the theme.

🌱 Charging the Commons
Nieuwe Instituut Zoöp, together with the research and design initiatives Charging the Commons and Dark Matter Lab, is organising a workshop to explore how design can contribute to the technological and organisational conditions of a more-than-human consciousness. What kind of ‘relational interfaces’ can help us to imagine relationships with each other, different life forms and the planet that are based on stewardship and the common good, rather than domination and ownership?

📖 Book Launch: Art Applied by Inside Outside/Petra Blaisse
This event presents Art Applied, a new book documenting the work of designer Petra Blaisse and her studio Inside Outside. The book offers a kaleidoscopic view of more than three decades of interior, exhibition and landscape design.

Opening today!
Thursday May 16 2024 | 17h–19h

Curated by Maureen Mooren, head of design at the Nieuwe Instituut and professor at the HGB, and Armand Mevis, graphic designer and head of Werkplaats Typografie, Forms of (ex-)Change invites graphic designers to explore change in relation to themes of personal importance. While the exhibition is about exchange, it is also the result of exchange – between disciplines and practices, and of knowledge and culture.

The creation of a graphic message is never a neutral exchange between sender and receiver, as the receiver’s interpretation, bias and personal background all come into play. It is also about inclusion and exclusion, cultural understanding and access. And since the audience has to interpret the work, there is always the risk that the makers’ message will be misunderstood. In Forms of (ex-)Change, the temporary collective of professional and student designers create a multi-layered image of exchange and change – the (ex-)change of their practice.

We're excited to share the news about the upcoming display Dutch, More or Less: Contemporary Architecture, Design and Digital Culture!n This new, long-term evolving exhibition celebrates the diversity of Dutch design within the three design disciplines represented by the Nieuwe Instituut.

Dutch, More or Less: Contemporary Architecture, Design and Digital Culture is a presentation about more than 30 years of Dutch creative practice. Rather than simply telling the story of Dutch architecture, design, and digital culture, it aims to show how these disciplines have evolved from exploring what they are to what they can do, in a way that has placed the Netherlands at the forefront of international practice. What are the questions and issues they address? How has the image of “more or less Dutch” design evolved, and where does it go from here? With more than 65 contributions from designers, makers and agencies.

Our very own museum villa, Sonneveld House, plays a key role in the creation of the book and the exploration of “simultaneous modernism” in the two cities, to which the guests have already dedicated an exhibition in 2016.

🤖 REBOOT: Pioneering Digital Art is an exhibition featuring key works from 1960 to 2000, plus new interpretations by contemporary makers. REBOOT is an initiative of Nieuwe Instituut and media art platform LI-MA.

✏️ Designing the Netherlands. 100 Years of Past & Present Futures
In the Netherlands, spatial planning is back on the drawing board, as government and architects try to find a response to the major societal and ecological challenges that affect us all, such as the climate crisis, housing, the energy transition and social justice. Designing the Netherlands is a collaboration with the Dutch Board of Government Advisors (CRa). With new design proposals as well as numerous examples from the architecture collection of the Nieuwe Instituut, this exhibition provides much-needed inspiration for a new vision of the design of our country.

🇸🇷 Soengoe Kondre / Submerged Heritage
The exhibition Soengoe Kondre / Submerged Heritage takes you to the interior of Suriname, the former Dutch colony on the Caribbean coast of South America, where an area covering 1560 km2 was submerged under water after the completion of the Afobaka dam in 1964. Built as the country was transitioning to full independence, which would come in 1975, the dam’s far-reaching consequences included the mass displacement of Maroons – the descendants of Africans enslaved under colonialism who, beginning in the 18th century, fought and escaped their bo***ge and established independent inland settlements.

🔨 Designing the Social
Designing the Social is an exhibition exploring 100 years of socially driven, idiosyncratic ideas about living together. Sometimes out of idealism, often out of pure necessity, alternative design strategies were developed in the pursuit of an equal society.
