This image of British ultrarunner Sophie Power breastfeeding her 3-month-old son, Cormac, was taken at a rest stop 16 hours into the 106-mile trail race. ❤

“Oh my god, I was in agony," she told of this moment. "Cormac usually feeds every three hours, and it took me 16 to get to Courmayeur where he could first meet me, so I was hand expressing everywhere I could en route. I was so relieved he was hungry!”

Sophie took the race slow and steady and made subtle changes to the way she ran because she was breastfeeding.

"In a typical race I would get in and out of the aid stations as quickly as possible, but here I had to focus on keeping down enough food for me and for Cormac, and resting,” she said.

She completed the intense race through France, Italy and Switzerland in 43 hours and 33 minutes. 💪💪💪

I was researching earlier about the proper latch because it's a very important piece of information to have for first time breastfeeding moms who might be reading our feed.

There's a lot of Youtube videos about it - I hope new mommas are taking time to study those!

Planning to breastfeed but don't know where to start?

Breastfeeding was far from my mind when I was pregnant in 2012. I tried but not hard enough, and so I quit after a month of “trying.”
Fast forward to 2018, I was pregnant again (with twins!) and this time, I 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 to breastfeed.

Here's what I did to prepare myself.

*𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩
I read blogs, watched YouTube, attended seminars, and talked to friends who have successfully breastfed.
I wanted all my questions answered.

*𝘎𝘦𝘵 𝘢 𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘎𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘱
I told my bfeeding friends and they shared tips and encouraged me. I was blessed to have a great support group who visited me, lent me their breast pump, and even helped me get breastmilk donations.
Having someone to talk to, especially at the start, really helps.

*𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘤𝘬 𝘰𝘯 𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘴
On my list were: Breast pads, nursing bras, clothes to breastfeed in (have not yet discovered 𝙈𝙪𝙢 𝙗𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙡𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙨 then), nursing covers, galactagogues. I loved lactation treats, they cheered me up and motivated me, aside from increasing my milk supply.

*𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦
I set-up a nursing corner at home, just a comfy couch + side table. I always had water, my phone, power bank and earphones beside me.

*𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘔𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺
This was very 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵.
With my first baby 10 years ago, I wasn't prepared at all. Back then, I had so many excuses because bottom line: I did not want to do it.
This time with the twins, I was determined. I knew it was going to be worth it, especially since I was expecting premature twins.
Preparing mentally also means taking care of ourselves. I didn’t want to feel stressed and pressured.

*𝘛𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳
I told my OB and she was supportive of course and advised I could drink malunggay capsule by 32 weeks.
Hospitals are now breastfeeding advocates but it wont hurt to clearly state that you only want breastmilk for your baby.
The twins and I were very lucky to be in a very breastfeeding-friendly environment.

𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙮, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙤 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝙞𝙩.

Clogged ducts are so painful and uncomfy! It's like there's a rock inside your b**b and it's very hard to get it out!

I was on day 3 of having clogged ducts and was feeling helpless coz hot compress and massage did not seem to do the trick. I was getting feverish and it was so painful already. I posted my problem on Insta; another mommy told me about this! And OMG, the feeling was soooooo satisfying. Seeing the milk flow to the silicone pump was heaven haha.

Hope this helps out mommas who need it!

To avoid clogging our milk ducts, we need to regularly remove breastmilk. Best to consult lactation experts or read more about it and see what works for you. :)

Silicone milk collectors are available at your favorite baby stores. The most popular brand is Haakaa. I think they are the original inventors of this must have.
