Directions of force: A big part of this game is applying forces upon your opponent in a way designed to fulfill some purpose or goal. How accurately you apply that force is a big part of whether you succeed or fail in achieving that purpose or goal. Accuracy usually pertains to a target, but in the case of applying force to an opponent it also involves how accurately you apply the direction of that force. Sometimes even a minor error in the direction of force can create a big drop in performance of a given move. Oftentimes you will need to change the direction of force in response to an opponent’s movements or resistance mid move. The key is this - don’t just choose a direction and push or pull with all your might. Try to feel where beneficial changes in direction can be made as soon as you start applying force and be alert to any changes that need to be made as you and your opponent start moving. You can easily feel when you’ve been stopped - don’t just quit - look for a new direction. If you change to a new direction and you feel you’re pushing into a brick wall of resistance yiuve clearly gone in a wrong direction so change again until resistance lowers. Learn to feel where resistance increases and where it decreases and move in accordance with this - this will make your game far more efficient and rewarding

Had a great time teaching a Jujitsu workshop last night in Montgomery Al. Thank Professor Bill Boutwell for having me in again. Professor Billl and his team have been a welcoming place for me to teach and train during my work trips to Montgomery over the past 15 years. If you’re in the area definitely look these guys up.

It was great having Professor Brian Brown dropping knowledge on the mat last night! We work on the "Tripod," and the "Reverse Tripod" sweeps. Oss!

Study on this

How fast do you learn? A question I’m often asked is whether it is possible to increase the rate at which you learn the skills of Jiu jitsu. My answer to this is yes - definitely. There are however limits on how quickly you can learn any physical skill and jiu jitsu is no exception. There are quite a few factors involved in speed of skill acquisition. Two of them that I place a lot of importance upon are TECHNIQUE SELECTION and FOCUS. When it’s time to improve your performance in a given skill area it’s important to choose wisely which techniques you will focus upon. Not all techniques are created equal. Some figure much more prominently in successful outcomes in high level competition - focus on these above others to make faster progress overall. In addition, focus your training time upon a smaller set of moves to maximize training volume on those skills, even at the expense of learning other skills. Remember always that in this game one move performed very well will almost always outperform a dozen moves performed in a mediocre fashion. Don’t despair if your current skills diminish a little as you focus on these new skills. Be confident that moves learned prior can be re-learned much more easily than brand new skills - you will recover them quickly with a little training. When it’s time to increase your performance quickly - choose wisely and focus intently on those choices - you’ll soon see results

I can say from personal experience, that this works fantastically well.

Frames: When you’re in bottom position the single biggest need you have in order to be effective is SPACE. Your opponent will be doing everything they can to take space away from you so your game will always be to put defensive frames between you and your opponent to maintain space. If you can maintain space you can move and if you can move you can win - so get those frames in place and protect your space!!

This is a game where the addition of a single relevant detail can take your performance of a given move from mediocre to highly effective in a short time frame - so study hard! Many people are willing to work very hard physically but shy away from mental study. Hard physical work is great but much better when complimented by hard thinking about how to improve performance through more refined technique.

Gaining prior advantage: Jiu jitsu is founded upon the principle of advantage - WHENEVER POSSIBLE: PRIOR TO LAUNCHING AN ATTACK - BEGIN BY GAINING SOME FORM OF PRIOR ADVANTAGE THAT MAKES THAT ATTACK MORE LIKELY TO SUCCEED. There are many forms of prior advantage - you can break an opponents balance, break his stance, distract him, surprise him - the list is long. One of the best when it comes to sweeps and takedowns is to create an advantage by having your two legs on the ground to provide base, mobility and drive while you take one of your opponents legs off the ground so that he has substantially less base, mobility and drive than you do. This makes the chance of a successfully completed sweep or takedown far higher than you fight in an equal footing. Whichever method you select, begin by seeking prior advantage of some type any time you can - it always makes your task a little easier
