Solemnity of Saint Joseph, husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary – March 19, 2024

https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/031924.cfm

One of the great tragedies of the modern American experience is the reality of fatherless families. I know this is a complex issue, but it is especially sad when a father willingly departs from his responsibilities, leaving great and demanding duties to the mother as the only remaining head of the household. Studies have shown the negative consequences on children in fatherless homes.

Today is the Feast of St. Joseph, patron saint of Italy. Italy also celebrates this day as Father’s Day.

What a great concept! To unite St. Joseph to the celebration of Father’s Day. What a natural combination.

We need the intercession of St. Joseph, the adoptive father of Jesus and the husband of Mary, to support the dads in our communities. We can also pray for all men, who need our support to become the best men that God wants them to be, whether single or married, young or old.

Looking at the example of St. Joseph, who supported his wife, protected his family, and passed on the traditions of religious practice to Jesus, may all of our men be more like him: both gentle and strong at the same time.

With St. Joseph’s help, spend some time today to pray for the important men in your life who are your brothers, sons, husbands, and fathers.

St. Joseph, patron saint of the Universal Church, families, and fathers, pray for us. Amen.
