Zillow is NOT accurate, nor is it a substitute for "boots on the ground" flesh and blood real estate professionals. No matter how good they claim their computer algorithm may be it can never account for the hundreds of variations that give (or take!) value from your home.
Do Zillow ‘Zestimates’ mislead home buyers? Illinois lawsuit claims yes Suburban-Chicago home builders filed legal action last week against real estate-marketing firm Zillow, whose property value approximations are misleading would-be home buyers with lowball figures that have stalled sales, the suit claims. But Zillow argues it’s never claimed to be an appraiser.

Want Your Home to Get a Reality Show Makeover? You'd Better Read the Fine Print First
I've posted about this before, but it's a hot button issue for me... All the shows on HGTV and the like are not REALITY... they are in the business of television, NOT real estate... They make decisions to make good tv, not financially sound real estate decisions... The only ones that are even close to accurate as far as the true cost to renovate and repair CORRECTLY are the ones with Mike Holmes. It's great to get inspired by fantastic contractors and designers, but when everyone jumps in and becomes a "flipper" because they see it on tv, things can get disastrous. Not only can they make some big financial mistakes for themselves, but most often the "rehab" job done on a house should really be ripped down and done properly and the poor buyer ends up with the short end of the stick. Bottom line: Get some guidance from both a good real estate agent and contractor.
