Captain Book

I am well along into the Bosch series by Michael Connelly. This is the 4th book that features Detective Renee Ballard as a main character along with Harry Bosch. Bosch is officially "retired" but helps out Ballard in various ways including mentor.

I really enjoy this series and Connolly is one of my top go-to authors.

If you haven't checked out the Bosch series on TV, Titus Welliver is excellent in the role of Harry Bosch.

Pete - The Captain!

A few years ago, I read "Andrew Jackson and the Miracle of New Orleans" by Brian Kilmeade. I thought it was a very interesting book at the time and I still would recommend it for anyone interested in learning about this battle.

Almost two weeks ago, I finished "The Greatest Fury" by William C. Davis. This book is also about the Battle of New Orleans in January 1815.

This book goes into a lot greater detail of what happened, why and how it happened, and much more depth in the various personalities involved. It even goes into some detail on what happened after the battle and the lives of the various military figures and civilians that participated.

I really enjoyed the details as well as the how and why the battle was very important to our history. It was a great read.

Greetings from the Captain and the Mrs.!

Yesterday was a real treat for us. One of my favorite authors had an engagement and book signing at the Stardust Theater in Sun City West.

It seems the Mrs discovered that C.J. Box was coming to town and right in our neighborhood at 9:15 on February 26th. Naturally we had to go see him. This was in association with the Poison Pen Bookstore in Scottsdale.

We arrived just after 9:00 and waited outside the Theater for the doors to open. Once inside, we got in line to buy his new book and then into the auditorium.

C.J. Box came on at 10:00 and introduced himself and read a short excerpt from "Three-Inch Teeth". The title comes from the average length on a Grizzly Bear's main teeth.

He then opened it for questions and answers and was very pleasant and down to earth throughout. At the end he made himself available to sign books which we took advantage of. It was a great time and we both liked C. J. Box and enjoyed our time there very much.

Michael Connelly is one of my favorite authors. I have really enjoyed his Harry Bosch series as well as his Lincoln Lawyer series with Mickey Haller who is the Lincoln Lawyer

I just got back to Michael Connelly and read "The Crossing" and "The Wrong Side of Goodbye". Both of these Books were excellent and actually have Bosch and Haller working together. Bosch and Haller are actually half-brothers but ironically work on opposite sides as Bosch has a duty to catch and put away criminals while Haller's job ad a defense attorney is to find reasonable doubt and set his clients free.

I am now back to history with "The Greatest Fury" by William C. Davis. Those book is about the Battle of New Orleans.

A couple years ago I read Brian Kilmead's book on the Battle of New Orleans and found it very interesting. This book goes into even more detail on the planning and the various personalities on both sides who were often in conflict with each other as well as the enemy.
It is also very interesting so far and the British haven't even landed yet.

I am not sure what my next book will be but "Gettysburg" by Noah Andre Trudeau is a definite possibility. I have read a couple books on the Battle already and have been to the Gettysburg Battlefield but another take on this battle might be very interesting.

I guess I am just a history nerd. The Mrs. doesn't seem to mind.

Happy New Year, Everyone!

It is Friday, January 12th, 2024 and we are back at The Brass Armadillo adding more books to our booth for your enjoyment.

Again, there is a little something for everybody here. An author that is new in our mix is Jim Butcher as well as our other popular authors such as David Baldacci and Clive Cussler plus many more.

Of course we have history and biography including Grant, John Adams, and "The Last Stand" about Custer's Last Stand by Nathaniel Philbrick.
That one I read a few years ago and found it an excellent read on events that happened in June 1876.

In addition we have Classics such as "1984" and "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu among others.

If you are new to Arizona or have been here a while, you might want to check out our Arizona section. We have a decent selection including one on Meteor Crater, and at least a couple on the Grand Canyon.

We have many other books too numerous to list here but I took a few photos of just some of the books I thought you might find interesting.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! I hope you all had a great holiday yesterday and got to spend time with family and friends

I am very thankful for my kids, grandkids, and of course, the Mrs. We are also very thankful for our family, friends, and of course you, our wonderful customers. Without you we would not have our great little store.

Here are just a few of the selections that we have at Captain Book this week.

I just finished reading "In the Hurricane's Eye" by Nathaniel Phil Rick. If you are interested in the American Revolution I can highly recommend this one.

It covers the last couple of years of the Revolution and an American victory was by no means certain. With the French and Spanish as allies, Washington still had a lot to do to coordinate everyone to a common goal. It was not easy.

I learned a lot. In 1780, there were 3 major hurricanes in the Caribbean which heavily damaged the various fleets stationed down there. The loss of human life was also great as Barbados had around 6000 people killed alone.
For death and destruction these hurricanes were among the worst in history.

There was lots more that I learned in reading this but I don't want to spoil it for the potential reader.

We also have "Spare" which was a recent bestseller plus more history and some popular authors as well. Baldacci is a favorite of mine.

Another week and another restock at Captain Book. Here are pictures of just some of the books we brought in to our booth at The Brass Armadillo in Goodyear.

Once again, the Mrs.has found many interesting titles and subjects to stock our shelves with. Some of the ones that look interesting to me are "The Immortal Irishman" about Thomas Meagher, "Little Sister" about Natalie Wood as told by her sister, Lana, and "Leonardo Da Vinci" by Walter Isaacson.

I read part of the last chapter of "Little Sister" to get Lana's take on the death of Natalie. It was very interesting and plausible but I won't give it away here.

Well, well... It has been at least a couple weeks since our last post here. Anyhow we have a bunch of new books in for your perusal.

Another Friday restock at Captain Book at The Brass Armadillo.

We have a great selection of new arrivals that came in today. More popular authors like Baldacci and J.A. Some humor for your Saturday. There is some truth here. Confession: I hate self checkouts. I know, it's just me. Right?

Here is another great selection of books we just got in to The Brass Armadillo for restock day.

Lots to choose from including history, biography, popular authors and other topics.

We just got in the Dust Lands series by Moira Young. This looks to be in the Dystopian, Post- Apocalyptoc, Sci-Fi genre sort of like The Hunger Games. It does look interesting.
We also received some of the newer books in The Woman's Murder Club series by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro. I have read the first seven and have really enjoyed them.
Another interesting looking book is Death in Yellowstone which covers various deaths in our first National Park. We have had Death in the Grand Canyon before.

It's restock day at Captain Book at The Brass Armadillo in Goodyear..

For those of you who are Harry Potter fans, we managed to get 6 of the 7 books in the series in today. The only one missing is "Goblet of Fire".

We now have the Ken Follett series of 3 books on the Twentieth Century in hardback. I am currently reading "The Evening and the Morning" which is from his Pillars of the Earth series. I may read these at some point as I consider Ken Follett and excellent writer of historical fiction.

Of course we have lots of other selections as well that arrived this week with just a few of them pictured below.
