Today we spotlight Deputy E. Burkett!

I’m Deputy E. Burkett. I have been a dog warden with Butler County since October 2023. I haven’t been a dog warden for long, but I love what I do. I love working with animals. I worked in the veterinary field for 3 years prior, but I wanted to be a bigger voice for them.
Doing welfare checks is one of my favorite things to do. Making sure animals are being well taken care of and are healthy and happy. Now there are always some that are not as great and being able to help them makes it better.
A call that has stuck with me is a few weeks ago I was called to remove dogs from a home. They were in the basement and weren’t living in the best conditions. One of the dogs was very matted and cowered in a corner scared. I have enjoyed watching her come out of her shell, be a dog, and enjoy the world. Moments like this are why I can’t wait to see what many more years bring!

Today we spotlight Deputy H. Hall.

I'm Deputy H Hall, I have been a dog warden for almost a year!

Being a dog warden has been very rewarding so far. This job is one of those where you see the fruits of your labor every day. From picking up loose dogs and getting them off the streets to cruelty cases, we deal with it all. I think something a lot of people don’t realize is how often we have to set traps for stray dogs. Treats are not always a dogs best friend and sometimes they are petrified of people. It’s very rewarding when we finally catch a dog people haven’t been able to even get close to. A lot of these animals are scared of life and when you are able to get close to them you can see how badly they wanted someone to save them. I love this job and the community of animal lovers who work every day to save these beautiful creatures.

Today we spotlight Deputy St. John!

I'm Deputy K. St. John. I have been a dog warden for Butler County since November of 2020. I started this job at 20 years old with limited life experience.
Over the years I have dealt with the good and the bad.
One thing I enjoy doing is patrolling. I work the area from Madison Twp to West Chester. Patrolling allows us to find dogs that are in trouble or causing trouble. We are then able to remedy the situation. What a lot of people don’t understand is that we are here to help. We are not here to hurt anyone or their dogs. My hope is that every call I handle is a lesson learned. We don’t issue citations to everyone we meet. In fact most situations can be and are handled with verbal or written warnings.
My favorite calls are ones where the dog is healthy, friendly and wearing a valid dog license. We can easily get the dog owners information. This saves the owner a trip to the shelter. It also prevents emotional distress of the dog and owner looking for said dog.

Just a few days ago I removed puppies from underneath a shed. A dog that had been missing for months had been nursing them. We found her running loose the day before. She was aggressive towards us, likely just protecting her babies. Some neighbors in the area believed she may have had puppies. It was raining and we did not see or hear anything. She was not friendly enough to walk her around. The next morning with the property owners permission we searched and located 3 healthy puppies under a shed. This is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.

Today we spotlight Deputy Forkner!

I'm Deputy A. Forkner. I have been a dog warden for Butler County since April 2016. I love being a dog warden for many reasons. I like to be the voice for the animals. I also enjoy educating the public. There are no 2 calls alike, you never know what your day will involve.
While every aspect of our job is important, Every year we do random dog license checks. This is something that I enjoy doing. Not only does it enforce people having their tags, but I get to meet people living in my area. I meet and see who has dogs and where those dog belong. This can make a huge impact on my ability to return dogs to their owner. I am able to recognize the dog, and it's more likely that the dog would have a valid dog license. I can then return it home instead of having to take it to the shelter.
I look forward to many more years as a deputy dog warden.

Celebrating National Animal Control Officer Week with Deputy St. John.

" I'm Deputy K. St. John, I have been a dog warden for over 2 years. My favorite animals are cats. I have three myself.

One thing that I wish people knew more about are cats. They are considered "free roaming" animals. This means they do not have to be confined or kept on the owners property. It is illegal to purposefully harm or relocate them. Dog Wardens WILL pick up an INJURED or SICK cat.

A feral cat lives outdoors and avoids humans. Most of the time you won't even see them except from afar. A stray cat lives outdoors but will allow human contact. Some cats would rather live outside. Bringing them indoors or to the shelter would cause more stress. Sometimes those "stray" cats actually have a home.

Cats breed very fast. They can have anywhere from 1-12 kittens per litter and can have up to 5 litters a year. TNR stands for Trap, Neuter and Release. This is a program offered by many different shelters and rescues. You bring feral/stray cats in humane traps, they are fixed, sometimes vaccinated, and treated for any illnesses or problems they may have. The cats are also "ear tipped" so that if they are trapped again they are released. The cats are released in the SAME location they were originally trapped. This helps control population as well as with diseases and the overall health of cat colonies. "

Thank you Deputy St. John for all you do.

Celebrating National Animal Control Officer Week with Deputy Forkner.

" I'm Deputy A. Forkner. I have been a dog warden for Butler County for 7 years. As a warden, we respond to calls like stray dogs, injured/sick dogs and cats, welfare checks on animals, and animal bites.

Our job is not limited to that. On every call, we also check for dog tags.

Dog tags are an Ohio state law. Every dog over 3 months of age must have a county tag every year. They go on sale for $14 Dec 1, and you must have them by Jan 31. After Jan 31, they double to $28, and you could be cited for not having them. Anytime you get a new animal, you have 30 days to get its license.

While having a dog license is not only the law, it also has benefits. If your dog is picked up by the public, they can call the auditor office and give the tag number. They can be provided with your info to get your dog back to you. If police or wardens pick up your dog, we will run the tag and attempt to return your dog home instead of taking it to the shelter. If your dog has a current tag on and is taken to the shelter, it gives you 14 days to get your dog instead of the typical 3 day stray hold.

I always tell people, remember to get it by making it your dog Christmas gift every year!
Do you need a license? You can call our office, 513-887-7297, to come out to you and sell it. You can visit Animal Friends Humane Society during their business hours. You can also visit butlercountyauditor.org to purchase online or find a list of places that sell them! "

Thank you Abby for everything you do! ❤️

Help us celebrate National Animal Control Officer Week.

We want to thank all the Butler County Dog Warden & Humane Officers and the local Animal Control Officers for all they do. We are thankful that we get to work in conjunction with you everyday to give the animals of Butler County a safe place to go.

Your job is rain or shine, day and night, dangerous, thankless, happy and sad . You give a voice to the animals of Butler County that can't speak for themselves. You go on welfare calls not knowing what you'll find and when you find the worst you put your heart into finding justice for that animal. You’re amazing individuals. We’re lucky to have each and every one of you. We see your hearts and your love for our community and the animals that live here.

Everyday this week. We will post a different officer, they will share some information with you that you'll hopefully find helpful and informative. If you see any of them out in the community this week give them a smile 😃, a thumbs-up 👍, honk your horn and give them a wave 👋 or simply say thank you!
