The NYC SRMC is a group of academic, research and cultural institutions providing NYC HS students with authentic mentored research experiences.
The NYC Science Research Mentoring Consortium is a group of New York City-based academic, research and cultural institutions committed to providing NYC high school students with mentored, authentic research experiences in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). We leverage our connections to increase student recruitment, share experiences and expertise, and identify specific opportunitie
s, challenges, and strategies for effectively supporting students in developing science research skills and competencies. We also jointly develop and implement a set of experiences to support students in developing a shared community and college and career readiness. In the Consortium’s first year, more than 150 high students from 68 high schools mentors worked with nearly 80 faculty, post-doctoral and graduate student on authentic research projects across 20 disciplines. In its second year, our programs will serve a greater number of students in additional program locations, engaging new mentors and increasing the Consortium’s ability to impact STEM interested students in New York City. The NYC Science Research Mentoring Consortium currently consists of 12 member institutions:

· The Center for Excellence in Youth Education of the Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai (CEYE)
· Columbia University Zuckerman Institute, Brain Research Apprenticeships in NY at Columbia (BRAINYAC)
· Columbia University Earth Institute - Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO)
· CUNY Remote Sensing Earth Systems (CREST) Institute, High School Initiative in Remote Sensing of the Earth Systems Science & Engineering (HIRES)
· CUNY College Now (on 5 campuses), STEM Research Academy
· DNA Learning Center, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Urban Barcode Research Program (UBRP)
· Harlem BioSpace & Columbia University, HYPOTHEkids

While the structure and implementation may vary, all programs in the Consortium incorporate the following core principles into their student research experiences:
· A minimum of 70 hours per year of preparatory coursework in science content, methodologies and lab skills that meet or exceed standards for high school science achievement.
· Student immersion in an authentic science research project, mentored in a one-to-one or two-to-one relationship with the scientist conducting the research, for approximately 100 contact hours.
· Preparatory resources and training in youth mentoring for scientists.
· Access to academic and career guidance for science success.
· Student access to scientific journals and presentations that support students’ fluency in science communications.
· A culminating project that allows students to develop and present their research. Funding for the NYC Science Research Mentoring Consortium is generously provided by The Pinkerton Foundation.
