Layering Found Cardboard into Communing Forms, Ann Weber's Sculptures Emphasize Togetherness — Colossal 29/08/2024

"From scraps of found cardboard, Ann Weber constructs billowing forms that rise in vibrant patterns—almost figure-like—to greet us. The Los Angeles-based artist (previously) focuses on sustainability, community, and relationships by using found materials and pairing forms.. Weber’s titles often suggest individual characters and places, like in “Personages, Elkhart Lake” or “O Buddy, O Pal.” Symbolizing the act of bringing people and ideas together, strips of cardboard are layered, fastened, and intertwined with one another to create a sturdy and reliable structure.

In 1991, when Weber first began to experiment with with medium, she drew on her experience making functional pottery. She was inspired by architect Frank Gehry’s cardboard furniture, and the material was attractive due to its malleability and lightness. A couple decades later, the proliferation of global shipping—the boxes required to deliver goods and the waste they produce—amplified the artist’s interest in repurposing something that might otherwise be landfill-bound."

"Backdropped by the New York City skyline, a collection of vibrant artworks by Suchitra Mattai is scattered across the Socrates Sculpture Park. The exhibition, We Are Nomads, We Are Dreamers, transforms the park into a space of contemplation and an exploration of identity, diaspora, and the reclamation of history. This sculptural installation is part of a busy year for the LA-based artist, represented by Roberts Projects, whose work continues to challenge and reframe the boundaries of art, culture, and memory."

Through Mixed-Media Quilts, Pacita Abad Dives Into the Lush Marine Ecosystems of the Philippines — Colossal 17/08/2024

"After a traumatic childhood moment in which she nearly drowned, Pacita Abad (1946-2004) developed a profound fear of water. The massively prolific Filipina-American artist decided to overcome her trepidation in the 1980s and signed up for diving lessons at the British Sub-Aquatic Club in Thailand. There, she learned to safely plunge into the depths of the sea, completing more than 80 dives across the Phillippines in her lifetime.

On view at Tina Kim Gallery in New York is a vivid series of trapunto paintings—a quilting technique that involves adding stuffing for puffed layers—inspired by Abad’s love for swimming. Titled Underwater Wilderness, the exhibition presents eight large-scale works made between 1985 and 1989. Plastic buttons, rhinestones, glitter, and sequins add textured dimension to the dense prismatic seascapes of tropical fish and plants. Evidence of Abad’s fascination with the lush ecosystems, the mixed-media works stitch together a vibrant tapestry of what lies below the surface."

Ariana Heinzman Archives — Colossal 11/08/2024

"Over the centuries, humanity’s relationship with wilderness has becoming increasingly fraught, as we continue to diminish natural green spaces in favor of roads, buildings, and manicured lawns. For Vashon Island-based artist Ariana Heinzman, our connection—or disconnection—to nature plays a central role in her vibrant ceramics practice."

"How did your tutor react to the whole episode?
I showed him the piece before I put it on Twitter. He liked it, he tends to like work that’s provocative or funny. Some people online saw it as a slap in the face to him, whereas he didn’t at all. Once it went viral I think he was a bit nervous, as you would be, but he’s been very supportive. I was lucky in that I never felt I’d be penalised for doing the opposite of what he suggested. Still, I would have made the piece anyway, even if I hadn’t known he’d be okay with it. If you can’t be true to yourself in your art, where can you be?"

I Transform My Strange Dreams Into Surreal Images (15 Pics) 03/08/2024

"ADHD: A Unique Lens on Creativity:
Living with ADHD presents unique challenges and opportunities. My mind is constantly buzzing with ideas and images, making it both a blessing and a challenge to focus on one project at a time. However, this also means that I see the world through a different lens, often noticing details and connections that others might miss. This heightened sensitivity to the world around me significantly influences my art, adding layers of complexity and depth to my work."

Silhouettes and Surreal Drawings Echo Strife and Self-Preservation In Valerie Hammond's 'Dreamers Awake' — Colossal 03/08/2024

"According to Greek mythology, Daphne was the descendant of river gods. Born with a surging hunger for freedom and autonomy, the nymph committed herself to living a life rooted in solitude as she poured herself into deep passions like nature and hunting. Although Daphne devoted a great deal of time to exploring her tranquil surroundings, she eventually found herself in the chaotic throes of unrequited love as Apollo desperately sought to seize her for himself. One day, during a relentless pursuit in which Daphne was being chased by the Greek god, her only escape was to call to her father for help, who subsequently transformed her into a laurel tree. Narratives similar to this, symbolizing the adversity of self-preservation against burdening pressures set forth by powerful men, play a critical role in Valerie Hammond’s current solo exhibition titled Dreamers Awake"

"An unforgettable adventure..." 26/07/2024

Definitely going to check this out:
"Her friends included Van Gogh, Degas, and Renoir. Paris celebrated her as a sought-after model, until she picked up the brush herself, at a time when art schools refused to accept female students.

By the time Suzanne Valadon was 15 years old, she’d been a horse walker, a milliner, a funeral wreath maker, and a circus acrobat, but that was just the beginning of her adventures. Here is her story, along with Ellie's, a modern woman a century later at a crossroads of her life, who pulls Suzanne from the shadows of the past into the light."
