Want to know Something Personal About Us?
Stephen lost his grandparents when he was very young but was privileged in 1980 to work with the loving husband and wife gerontology team of Andrew and Susan Dibner, the creators of Lifeline; an innovative system to enable elders and the disabled to live independently at home, with dignity. With Lifeline, he had the opportunity to travel the country, meeting elders, the grandparents he never had, according to him.
At about this time his mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. His family received conflicting and erroneous advice from well-meaning but misinformed professionals, including a horrific estate plan. He set out on a mission to combine his technical skills (a BA in English and Psychology along with an MBA from Northeastern University) with a law degree and specialize in elder, disability, estate, tax and probate law. His father and amazing sister Barbara performed the extremely difficult daily work while he crafted a plan using the innovative PACE program in East Boston, that enabled his mom to live out her life without ever having to go to a nursing home.
Remembering the loving cohesiveness of the Andrew and Susan Dibner and their ability to work together and the sense of family they brought to Lifeline, Stephen convinced his wife Attorney Francine Dawicki, who he had met at Bunker Hill Community College in 1975, to join him. She, along with her other devoted and loving siblings, had helped care for both her mother and father and enabled her mother and father to live out their lives with independence and dignity; Spano & Dawicki was born.
One day an amazing young woman with came into the office for an interview. She had two children, aged 5- and 7 and was living with and caring for her aging mother so that her mother would never have to go to a nursing home. Francine interviewed her, came out of the interview and told Stephen that “we have to hire her immediately, she is perfect!” Attorney Andrea Witt joined the Firm and continued to care for her mother until she passed away without ever having to go to a nursing home. Her wisdom and intellect, combined with her compassion, continue to help others struggling along the same journey.
