I went to a friend's funeral some time ago. I only knew his widow in passing, and he was survived by two young children whom I'd not met. Sadly, I'd never offered to do my friend's family trust for him. Before I left the reception, I offered my condolences to his widow again and gave her my business card. I told her to feel welcome to call me if she needs anything.

About 6 months later I got an unexpected call from her. She said she had a question for me. A family member had proposed a business opportunity to her that would have tied up almost 60% of her liquidity. After a short interview, I advised against it.

She recently called me and told me how glad she was that she'd called me. To be polite, I didn't ask why. She also asked if I could help her put her family trust together. Of course, she was most concerned about the guardians for her kids as well as who would manage their inheritances. I'll be meeting with her soon and it will be such a pleasure to help my beloved friend's family.

The lesson I learned from this is to not be so shy about offering my services to friends. My business motto is, Peace of Mind is Priceless. That appears to go both ways.
