Feldenkrais is a somatic education method that uses gentle movement and awareness to improve movement, flexibility, and overall well-being. It is based on the idea that we can learn to move more efficiently and comfortably by paying attention to our bodies and how we move.

Feldenkrais can help improve the parasympathetic nervous system by:

* Teaching us how to relax our muscles.
* Improving our body awareness.
* Reducing stress and anxiety.

Here is an example of a Feldenkrais exercise that can help to improve the parasympathetic nervous system:

Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.

Place your hands on your lower back, with your fingers pointing towards your spine.

Take a deep breath in and gently press your lower back into your hands.

As you exhale, slowly release the pressure in your lower back.

Repeat this for 10-15 breaths.

This exercise helps to relax the muscles in the lower back and improve the range of motion in the spine. It can also help to reduce stress and anxiety.

Feldenkrais is a safe and gentle way to improve the parasympathetic nervous system and overall well-being. It is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. If you are looking for a way to improve your health and well-being, Feldenkrais is a great option to consider.

Many of us may suffer with a tight jaw from time to time. The reasons can range from stress to inflammation.

The joint of the jaw, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), is a ball and socket joint similar to that in your shoulder. The upper jaw is fixed being part of the skull but the lower jaw, thanks to the TMJ is able to move in a number of different directions.

Some of the causes of jaw tightness include

• Stress & anxiety – peoples bodies show stress in different ways, including tensing muscles.
• Excessive grinding and chewing – bruxism is an unconscious habit of clenching or grinding the teeth which can happen when awake or asleep. Bruxism can be a response to stress or anxiety.
• TMJ disorders
• Arthritis – osteo and rheumatoid
• Tetanus
• Poor posture
• Injury to the face or mouth

Gentle exercise is often advised for people suffering from a tight jaw.

Outside my studio at home with Teru whom I helped to release her shoulders and neck, such that she managed the fantastic achievement of an injury-free 8km cold swim from Robben Island to the mainland. I felt really proud of her, and so pleased that the Feldenkrais work I did with her made such a difference. Thanks Teru!
