According to the there are approximately 38.4 million people living with HIV - Two thirds of those are living within the African region.

Exercising is just as important for people living with HIV/AIDS as it is for those who aren’t. CD4 cells aid the body in fighting off viruses and those who exercise regularly have been shown to have higher CD4 counts.

Medications that are needed in HIV+ people allow them to lead full, normal lives, and normal diseases of aging have become an area that needs to be addressed as well. As exercise is proven to improve cardiovascular health, bone health, mental health and improve cancer risk – remaining active should be incorporated in all people’s routines for healthy aging.

There is no link between exercise and reduced immune function so, if you are living with HIV/AIDS, contact your biokineticist to help you to find the right approach to your routine - They will take your full medical history into account and any other injuries that may be hindering your activities.

In South Africa, about 6% of people have diabetes, and millions more are pre-diabetic or have the disease but are oblivious to it.

Diabetes can be treated and its consequences avoided or delayed with diet, physical activity, medication and regular screening and treatment for complications thus a biokineticist will form part of a multidisciplinary team to manage the disease.

A biokineticist can conduct a personalized examination including measuring your blood sugar levels and monitoring your heart rate during moderate exertion. Armed with an intimate knowledge of your circumstances, the biokineticist will then design and prescribe a physical activity or exercise program to suit your exact requirements.

Biokineticists can also advise on exercises to reduce body fat and enhance how the body handles glucose. Both crucial components in diabetic management.
The proper use of exercise prescription can help regulate/control blood glucose levels. Regular exercise can lead to improved glucose tolerance, increased insulin sensitivity and a decreased HbA1C value whilst also decreasing cardiovascular disease risk factors and increasing an individual’s longevity.

Today is World Cancer Day.
❔Did you know the correct scientific exercise prescription given by a Biokineticist could have a major impact in Cancer risk, prevention, treatment and recovery❔
Correct exercise has been found to conclusively reduce cancer-related fatigue both during and after cancer treatment.

Correct physical activity and exercise prescription minimises the effects of other cancer treatment-related side effects. Research shows that exercise during and following cancer treatment can:

*Reduce the risk of long-term heart problems after radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy;
*Minimises loss of bone strength;
*Reduces the risk of developing lymphedema;
*Improves anaemia (a red-blood cell deficiency); and
*Enhances quality of life.
*Exercise post-diagnosis may also influence risk of recurrence and death.

Not only does the World Health Organisation say exercise reduces cancer mortality, new research also suggests exercise may lower the risk of recurrence among people with cancer.

With no apparent outward appearance of anything wrong, who would have thought that many people are battling debilitating symptoms on a daily basis.

Today, the 12th of May is the day the world’s attention is turned to these invisible diseases to bring recognition and help to those suffering.

Chronic Immunological and Neurological Diseases (CIND) are silent, often overlooked, and for years wrongly perceived as non-existent, hypochondriac-inspired conditions. Nothing could be further from the truth. These conditions can not only result in excruciating pain, but also debilitating fatigue and impact on daily living and functioning, as well as relationships and livelihoods.
