“Drishti” is a Sanskrit word which means a focused gaze. Drishti bheda shloka dictates the various types of eye movements that are commonly used in Bharatnatyam to express Bhava ~ emotion.
Samam: Keep eyes still
Alokitam: Roll eye balls in a circular pattern
Saachi: Look through the corner of the eyes
Pralokitam: Move your eyes side to side.
Nimilitam: It looks like a half shut eye, try to focus the eye ball towards the heart
Ullokitam: Look upwards
Anuvrittam: Move eyes up and down rapidly

Alarmel Valli is a leading Indian classical dancer and choreographer and the foremost exponent of the Pandanallur style, in the Indian classical dance form, Bharatanatyam. She founded The Dipasikha Dance Foundation in Chennai in 1984. A talented dancer who was invited to perform at International Dance Festival of the Sarah Bernardt Theatre De La Ville, in Paris at the age of 16. She has inspired many dancers like me to study ancient texts in depth to understand the poetry and stories of Bharatnatyam.

Whenever Balasaraswati, also known as Tanjore Balasaraswati, appeared on the stage for her renditions of Bharatanatyam, the spectators were virtually electrified. Her body and every fibre of her being was always perfectly synchronised with the rhythm and music. Balasaraswati was possibly the greatest exponent of this dance form in the post-independent India. Alarippu is a welcome dance that I learned in my 2nd year of dance. ‘Alarippu’ is a Telugu word. Alari translates to petal and Pu means a flower. This dance piece in Bharatanatyam essentially awakens the dancers' inner ability to move around on the stage. It blossoms the person in a dancer just like a blooming flower.

The expressions and emotions which are shown to depict a character or to derive the meanings of a poem or a story, are called Abhinaya. In Bharatanatyam, the facial expressions are given more emphasis than the rhythmic movements. These four are used together, to express the poetic meanings. Margam ( or ‘a path’) is a traditional order of dance items which are performed in an Arangetram (dance performance) with or without breaks in between. A traditional bharatanatyam Margam generally contains Alarippu, Jathiswaram, Shabdam, Varnam, Padam, Thillana and Shloka in the same order as above, as the dance items. But, in some institutions, Pushpanjali, Kouthuvam, Mallari, Keerthanam, Javali, etc., are also added.
