Having diabetes raises your risk for stroke. But your risk is even greater if:
- you’re over age 55
- you have a family history of stroke or TIAs
- you have heart disease
- you have high blood pressure
- you’re overweight
- you have high LDL (bad) cholesterol and low HDL (good) cholesterol levels
- you are not physically active
- you smoke

You can't change some of these risk factors. But you can lower your chances of having a stroke by taking care of your diabetes and tackling some of the other risk factors, such as losing weight if you're overweight. It's up to you.

What does diabetes have to do with strokes?

If you have diabetes, your chances of having a stroke are 1.5 times higher than in people who don't have diabetes. But you can lower your risk by taking care of your health.

What is a stroke?

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is suddenly interrupted or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, spilling blood into the spaces surrounding brain cells. Brain cells die when they no longer receive oxygen and nutrients from the blood or there is sudden bleeding into or around the brain. The symptoms of a stroke include sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body; sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding speech; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble with walking, dizziness, or loss of balance or coordination; or sudden severe headache with no known cause. There are two forms of stroke: ischemic - blockage of a blood vessel supplying the brain, and hemorrhagic - bleeding into or around the brain.

We May Have Just Gotten a Better Idea Why We Get Déjà Vu 07/09/2016

Déjà vu: that funny, uneasy feeling that you’ve experienced something before, but you can’t recall when. Turns out, according to researcher Akira O’Connor, the freaky phenomenon may be less about your brain getting something scrambled, and more about it going out of its way not to do so.

We May Have Just Gotten a Better Idea Why We Get Déjà Vu New brains scans are shedding light.

Cholesterol and CAD

A myocardial infarction (heart attack) occurs when the heart muscle tissue does not receive vital oxygen and nutrients.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) occurs when the inside (the lumen) of one or more coronary arteries narrows, limiting the flow of oxygen-rich blood to surrounding heart muscle tissue.

Cholesterol and CAD

The plaque develops a fibrous coating on its outer edges. But if cholesterol continues to collect in foam cells inside the plaque, the fibrous outer coating can weaken and eventually rupture. Smaller arteries downstream from the rupture can quickly become blocked. Over time, a clot may develop at the rupture site and completely block the artery.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) occurs when the inside (the lumen) of one or more coronary arteries narrows, limiting the flow of oxygen-rich blood to surrounding heart muscle tissue.

Atherosclerosis is the process that causes the artery wall to get thick and stiff. It can lead to complete blockage of the artery, which can cause a heart attack.

Transient Ischemic Attack

TIA, or transient ischemic attack, is a "mini stroke" that occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery for a short time. The only difference between a stroke and TIA is that with TIA the blockage is transient (temporary). TIA symptoms occur rapidly and last a relatively short time. Unlike a stroke, when a TIA is over, there's no permanent injury to the brain. There's no way to tell if symptoms of a stroke will lead to a TIA or a major stroke.

Triglycerides

Triglycerides are a type of fat that is packaged with cholesterol when the lipoproteins form in the liver cells. Triglycerides are stored in fat all over the body and can be an energy source, like carbohydrates. Your cholesterol scores will show a measurement for triglycerides. A score higher than normal may mean you have a higher chance of developing coronary artery disease.

Cholesterol Score - HDL

High density lipoproteins (HDL) are called “good” cholesterol because they remove cholesterol from the bloodstream and the artery walls. A higher HDL score is desirable and will improve your overall cholesterol score.

Timeline photos 28/08/2016

Cholesterol Score - LDL
Low density lipoproteins (LDL) are considered “bad” cholesterol. While they carry needed cholesterol to all parts of the body, too much LDL in the system can lead to coronary artery disease, due to the buildup of LDL deposits in the artery walls.

Cholesterol Score

Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced and released into the bloodstream by cells in the liver. The body uses cholesterol to form cell membranes, aid in digestion, convert Vitamin D in the skin and develop hormones. Cholesterol is stored inside a waterproof envelope of lipids (fat), along with specific proteins that weave in and out of the envelope’s outer shell. These particles are called lipoproteins. While there are several types of lipoproteins, your cholesterol score measures just two: Low density lipoproteins (LDL) are considered “bad” cholesterol & High density lipoproteins (HDL) are called “good” cholesterol.

Heart Attack

A Heart Attack occurs when the blood flow that brings oxygen to the heart muscle is severely reduced or stopped. This happens because coronary arteries that supply the heart with blood can slowly become thicker and harder from a buildup of fat, cholesterol and other substances, called plaque. This slow process is known as atherosclerosis. If the plaque breaks open and a blood clot forms that blocks the blood flow, a heart attack occurs.

If You Have Heart Disease

The American Heart Association recommends 1 gram a day of EPA plus DHA for people with heart disease. Eating oily fish is best, but your doctor might recommend a fish oil capsule. If you've had a heart attack, a prescription dose of omega-3s may help protect your heart. Some studies show fewer heart attacks and fewer heart disease deaths among heart attack survivors who boosted their levels of omega-3.

How Omega-3s Fight Disease

Omega-3 fatty acids help your heart in several ways. They curb inflammation in the blood vessels (and the rest of your body). At high doses they also make abnormal heart rhythms less likely and lower your level of blood fats called triglycerides. Finally, they can slow plaque buildup inside the blood vessels.
