Mack Stevens - Playing the guitar and Harmonica himself.
Review
Starting his musical journey when he was around 16 years old singing at every chance with local musicians, he released his first album in 1993 on the Eagle Records label based in Germany in 1993 and now has over 45 different releases to his name which are still available through contacting Mack directly.he is known around the world as the Wildman of rockabilly. Mack now produces the majority of his work and has built his own studio at his home in Argentina, where he plans to write and record more tracks. His love for the old country hick styled music and his influences from such artists as Harmonica Sam, who was an early Singer, guitarist, harmonica player and session musician at sun studios in Memphis.
Track by track:
Old George
Two eery riffs sets the tone for this self-penned track telling the story of evil within a town, great writing and a single acoustic backing brings the feeling to life. The story is based on a true character and a dream. Great opening track even if it’s a sad tale.
Sitting on Top of the World
Not to be confused with the Al Jolson version of “I'm Sitting on Top of the World “from 1925. This version is an old country blues song composed by Walter Vinson and Lonnie Chatmon. Matt captures this song nicely keeping the optimism of the track true to form. Kicking the track off with a spoken word then chucking some great vocals that are backed by some great harmonica bluesy rhythms.
Highway
Another self penned cracker from Mack. The story of being told to go when he really wants to stay. Once again just backed by a single guitar. Clearly hear the tremor and emotion behind the lyrics whilst the music sets a trance to your mind. Finishing with a high powered vocal.
Sometimes
Once again Mack displayed the greatness of his writing skills. Starts off with that country humming. The tone reminds me of some country greats. The tone of Jim Reeves and the vocal of Hank Williams blended to give us a vocal. Great track.
Sneaky Pete
Fast paced harmonica setting the rhythm for the track. Sneaky Pete? Could be a friend or somebody from downtown? No, it’s a drink that just cannot be beat. I would say Mack has tried a few of these and wrote the track from experience. Saying that we all have, but we can’t play the harmonica this good. Get your dancing boots on for this one. Originally sung by sonny fisher on the starday label back in 1955.
Altar of Blood.
Country cult styled song with what could be disturbing to some listeners with explicit lyrics. This album does say, ” you never thought you would hear Mack like this”, and its the first country song to deal with the subject.
I Wish it Were Yesterday
Woes and its troubles that come with loving somebody. Simple lyrics backed with a heart-breaking guitar riff. Sadness fills Mack's vocals especially on the sorry full monologue ending. This is how country blues was originally defined and sung.
Broke Ass Man.
Great intro with that sublime harmonica filling the room with a fast-paced country beat. The story of a high classed lady and he isn’t hangin’ around no more. The harmonica really gives this song its heart and rhythm with its toe tapping beat. Great song for a fast paced ballad.
Hicky Dicky Doo
Mack sets the pace with some great acoustic guitar with just a hint of the harmonica slipping in behind the backing. Another great dancing track. get yourself down to the hicky dicky doo.
Jailer, Give My Belt To Me
Prisoner asking for mercy rather than face the crowd and the hangman. This brings us to the end of the album with the last all being written by Mack. Displaying his talent both musically and lyrically although a little bit dark in places. An enjoyable album.
Summary:
As I said in the beginning, Mack is credited as one of the best all round rockabilly singers going today. But here he shows us how much other genres influence him and the overall performer.

Best Rocking Place by Mack Stevens & His In The Groove Boys
Released, February 20th 2020, on Freedonia Records USA, rockabilly/Texas bop
Reviewed February 5th 2021
Mack Stevens is a Texas record-collecting legend, wearing his fondness for raucous Sun label up-tempo blues and hormonally driven backwoods Texas howlers upon his chest like Superman’s big red “S” emblem. This 10” EP with seven original songs and one cover (from Mark Lee Allen) is overflowing with Mack’s personality and sardonic eye towards genteel Southern society in the USA. These sneaky and snarky gems of lyrical insight are deceptively wrapped up in panting, hiccupping, squawling vocals. The stinging, primitive guitar leads from Sammy Paez set aside the prowess and depth sought by most modern rockabilly guitar players to focus on the purity and spontaneity of the types of guitar-playing formerly heard on some oddball Sun sides, Jerry Huffman’s work with Charlie Feathers, and guitar stylings on the Starday and Sarg labels from cats like Hal Harris and Joey Long. Stevens himself describes the style as “sarcastic guitar”, so it is the perfect counterpoint to the lyrics of these songs. Recorded live at Mack’s place around a hot microphone, several of these songs place slapping bass work by Jonas Etchi prominently in the mix and feature “just enough” drumming from Carlos Rotondaro. You might laugh at the lyrics, you might get up and dance, but you’ll definitely be stomping your feet long before getting up to flip the record over.
Best Rockin’ Place: this starts the record off hot with a bopper, with Paez adeptly borrowing riffs from Joey Long’s guitar work from Sonny Fisher’s song “Sneaky Pete”.
Hobo: here’s Stevens with a humorous look at the world at large through the eyes of a down-and-out drifter who prefers his lot in life compared to the limitations of the square world. It reminds me of the dark yet upbeat material by Sun artists Jimmy Wages and Ray Harris in its lyrics, and has a fast hillbilly backbeat.
Hey Kid, Your Mama’s Hot: another bopper, and it’s hot as a pawnshop pistol. “I don’t wanna be your daddy just an uncle will do, I’ll make her happy but I won’t make her my bride,” Stevens sings to the pie-eyed son of some single mother in a one-stoplight town. Dancing to this one may require a little bumpin’ or a little grindin’.
Don’t Let The Preacher man Hustle You: more of a fast-moving jukebox blues groove on this cut. Stevens gives us his lyrical thoughts on Evangelicals and the “golden rule”, which has been said before but never with such rhythm: “who has the gold makes the rule.” Paez goes for blues guitar racket as if it’s a Roscoe Gordon song, and Stevens name-drops John Lee Ho**er and his unusual tune “Burning Hell”.
God Almighty Damn: not safe for work (as they say), but who’s on the clock at this point? The slapping bass from Etchi is way in the front on this heavy hillbilly hoedown, and Paez throws in some Hal Harris-styled guitar.
Let Me Go: making a strong anchor after the previous two songs and their exposition of hypocritical churchgoing types, Stevens sings to a morally upright love interest the words “let me go, I want to go to hell on my own terms.” It’s a slower hillbilly two-step, and brings to mind that Jimmy Wages type of darkness again.
Long Lazy Woman: written by Mark Lee Allen, this is a bluesy stomp along the lines of Ida Red or Maybelline. Paez’s dry, overdriven tube amp gives it the “Rocket 88” tone to match.
I Got The Dirt on You: gives us more strong slapping bass with a Carl Perkins-ish chord progression. This backwoods double time sw***er closes the album as Stevens tells a fundamental pillar of the community “your churchy cohorts all would s**t a brick!”
This Mack Stevens EP delivers a lo-fi recording technique: live takes with the performers carefully arranged around a single handheld “home recording” variety microphone onto a portable 1961 Sony reel to reel tape recorder. The results are hot, present and lively. It’s full of unexpected lyrical turns that had me laughing, gritty unrefined guitar licks that kept my head bobbing, and raw slapping bass lines that kept my foot tapping. I’d expect nothing less from this independent and encyclopedic rockabilly Texan, and I was surprised and delighted by his “In The Groove Boys” from Argentina- those cats really know how to accurately reproduce the sound and feel of the music from the fringe of pure 1950s regional-label rockabilly.
The period-piece cartoon illustration and cover design are both by Marcel Bontempi. This thing sounds even better than it looks! Mack Stevens continues to offer collectible, quality products from his own Freedonia Records label- even the actual label itself perfectly captures the look.
