We are making free samples of areas of the globe available on NVIDIA Omniverse. This allows developers to experiment and prototype simulations, leveraging digital terrain from blackshark.ai into the computing platform NVIDIA Omniverse.
Developed jointly by Maxar and blackshark.ai, SYNTH3D allows developers and creators to simulate and visualize 3D environments representative of real-world locations where aesthetics and performance are crucial for commercial and government applications. Users will have access to the SYNTH3D samples of various regions in different sizes with the underlying semantic information about object properties like dimensions, geolocation, and materials to leverage in more precise simulation scenarios.
The samples are provided in Universal Scene Description (USD) format, natively supported by Omniverse, and can be visualized and used in the Omniverse environment. The next step after the static USD exports will be to develop an Omniverse Connector, allowing the streaming of the entire globe into Omniverse, as announced today by NVIDIA at the NVIDIA GTC Keynote.

Developed through a partnership between Maxar and Algaba , SYNTH3D allows developers and creators to simulate and visualize 3D environments representative of real-world locations where aesthetics and performance are key to commercial and government applications.
SYNTH3D was created by blackshark.ai by applying its patented generative artificial intelligence (AI) to Maxar’s Vivid imagery basemap, a global, cloud-free, virtually seamless view of Earth, with rich natural color and precise visual clarity. The AI extracts more than 1.4 billion buildings and procedurally generates them as 3D buildings. The buildings then have geotypical textures applied, meaning specific buildings may look different in the real world, but the overall appearance of the building height and façade reflect regional archetypes, creating a lifelike model.

We teamed up with Maxar, leveraging Maxar’s global cloudless satellite imagery basemap, Vivid, to create a highly performant and photo-realistic 3D map for many applications of enterprise and government customers. Together with Microsoft, we launched a joint product, , that allows users to detect and analyze various objects from large-scale aerial and satellite images. We presented our replica of Earth and launched a for Unreal Engine from Epic Games (currently in Private Beta mode), making the of Earth accessible to all people interested in doing any projects based on our technology. We attended myriads of conferences, showcased our technology in various settings, presented our research papers, and met many exciting professionals and new friends. We grew our team count, moved to a new bigger office to gather all the team members under one roof, and won many competitions and awards like never before.

The free Globe Plugin gives access to our data. This means that everyone interested in streaming blackshark.ai's synthetically reconstructed 3D terrain can do so now with ease. Everyone can now include ground textures, buildings, infrastructure, and vegetation of the entire globe based on satellite data into their Epic Gamess UE5-based projects.
With 1.5 billion buildings and over 30 million square kilometers of vegetation coverage, derived from Vivid global satellite imagery basemap and carrying semantic metadata, the use cases for this plugin are infinite: gaming, simulation, training, visualization of any kind, including real-life metaverse applications.

Abstract:
In the past the production of a photorealistic, geo-typical, 3D digital surface model of the entire globe has been a near impossibility. Ensuring that the model is geo-referenced, high-performance, and up to date have further complicated the task. Any manual approach is much too slow and automated methods have lacked region-specific aspects.
The novel approach for a 3D reconstruction solution was developed by the blackshark.ai team to overcome said limitations. It consisted of an end-to-end, cloud-computing-based geospatial platform that extracts terrain and infrastructure attributes from a global satellite imagery data set. This data was then transformed into a WGS84 georeferenced, geo-typical, photo-realistic, and semantically defined 3D digital twin of worldwide human-created infrastructure, which was capable of being streamed or stored entirely offline. A highly parallelized and resilient cloud architecture was used to deliver an accurate reconstruction of approximately 1.4 billion buildings and structures.
At the core of the 3D reconstruction lies the Procedural Geometry Generator (PGG). It uses a custom grammar that allows for a diversity of features previous solutions were unable to provide. The solution ensures that an unending proliferation of labyrinthine rules can be avoided. Diversity is realized using regional characteristics, biome definition, unique building constraints and pseudo-randomization. The result is that the procedural definition of buildings defines every single building in a unique, geo-typical- way with high performance. By performing reconstruction on the client side, PGG allows for reconstructions that would otherwise be untenable due to the required amount of streamed data. This method not only increases asset diversity, but also massively decreases required resources.
The resulting platform is a solid foundation for professional image generators, flight simulators and special use cases such as pilot training and sensor simulation. Additional challenges include persistent, synchronized, multi-view, multi-client states or material attributes at global scale.

Our CTO Arno Hollosi has just presented a paper, co-written with our Research Manager Thomas Menzel-Berger, named "Close to Real-Time Object Detection to Provide Synthetic Environments with Georeferenced Objects for Time-Critical Mission Planning" at the NATO Modelling and Simulation Group (NMSG) Annual Symposium.
In this paper, our team proposes an end-to-end geospatial pipeline that feeds current geo-data into a 3D digital twin environment for mission training and rehearsals in volatile, multi-domain scenarios. Here is a small excerpt from it:
"A fully automated solution based on a holistic global aerial data set (RGB, NIR, SAR) employs pre-trained ML-models to extract relevant geolocated 3D infrastructure and terrain data for a given mission area. A core feature of this technology is an integrated no-code, visual data labelling tool that enables non-AI/ML-trained personnel to apply ML analytics on current imagery to identify mission-critical objects over large-scale areas. These detected special interest objects are then automatically fed into the pipeline, georeferenced and visually represented in the synthetic rehearsal environment.
With this geospatial metaverse approach, synthetic training environments containing mission-critical details can be created practically in real-time. Future mission planning staffs will therefore have the ability to customize rehearsal simulations in an agile manner."
