Robbie Shone Photography, Innsbruck Videos

Videos by Robbie Shone Photography in Innsbruck. Committed to creating unique images of exploration in our extreme subterranean world.

For my work, light is everything! After nearly 15 years of illuminating caves around the world with Sunpak 120J flashes, it's time to retire this army of tired and well-loved strobes. As seen in this video from 2018 taken at the bottom of Veryovkina, the deepest-known cave in the world, they are old, outdated and some are even broken. That said, I’ll be very sad to see them go. They’ve been awesome! I am therefore super excited to share some amazing news. I have teamed up with Godox, who for over 30 years have been producing portable flashes and professional lighting solutions that deliver high-quality yet affordable products. I’m 100% confident they’ll perform to a high standard in the harsh, extreme and unforgiving environment. WTS as we illuminate more caves. @godox_global #godoxlighting

It’s an absolute honour to share the pages of @NatGeo’s special collectors edition with so many great photographers, artists and storytellers. “100 Best Photos - Iconic Images from This Century” is a beautiful portfolio celebrating the power of photography and inspirational storytelling. For decades, I have been committed to photographing and showcasing caves and to see my photograph from the deepest point in Veryovkina, the deepest-known cave in the world is truly remarkable. Thank-you National Geographic. @natgeo #collectorsedition #100BestPhotos #IconicImagesfromthiscentury

Video by Tobi Margreiter @tobiasmargreiter | Once upon a time, the entrance chamber of Schwarzmooskogel in the Totes Gebirge, Austria, was full of snow and ice. I first visited this cave nearly a decade ago, and even in that short time, the changes I’ve seen to the ice body are astounding. From my limited observations, this cave seems to be losing ice faster than others, possibly due to its lower elevation. In “When the Magic Melts,” an article in the October 2022 issue of National Geographic magazine, we document the important contributions of scientists—and tour guides—as they work against the clock in this rapidly disappearing landscape. Video by Tobi Margreiter Tobias Margreiter | For thousands of years, European ice caves have hosted beautiful, pristine environments that will soon be lost in our warming world. The study of ice caves has grown significantly in recent years, as scientists have scrambled to obtain as much information as possible from the caves before the ice is lost forever. In "When the Magic Melts," an article in the October 2022 issue of National Geographic magazine, we document the important contributions of scientists—and tour guides—as they work against the clock in this rapidly disappearing landscape. Over the next few weeks, I’ll share a photo-a-day from these beautiful environments. Stay tuned. #icecaves #climatechange #science #whenthemagicmelts #climatescience #Alps #Austria #NatGeo National Geographic Universität Innsbruck Eisriesenwelt National Geographic Magazine

It has been a dream of mine to produce a beautiful coffee table book showcasing the best and most important photographs from deep underground. In March 2000, when I began this journey, I never imagined that one day this would become a reality. I am so excited to finally present Hidden Worlds. We launched the book last month at the UIS Congress in Chambréy, France, where I caught up with so many incredible and inspiring friends and colleagues over a glass of wine. It was an incredible feeling to finally see the book in their hands. Huge thanks to all the people who have helped me over these 22 years. Huge thanks to my publisher, Kozu Books and to Jimmy Chin and Chai Vasarhelyi for writing the Foreword. If you haven’t already placed an order for the book, please just follow the link where the stockists can be found at the bottom of the page - http://www.shonephotography.com/hidden-worlds-2/ Thank-you! Volume II will be ready for preorder in 2044! 😉 #HiddenWorlds #caves #cavephotography #exploration #extremephotography #adventure #science #KozuBooks @kozubooks @jimmychin @chaivasarhelyi

For those that missed the release in June 2021, here is the beautiful and inspiring film made about my fiancé Professor Gina Moseley and her Greenland Caves Project by the 2021 Rolex Awards for Enterprise. Supported by Rolex, Gina plans to expand our work from northeast Greenland to north Greenland, where we will explore caves first photographed during the Cold War as part of aerial reconnaissance. Even today these caves remain unexplored. As with our other work, we hope to sample cave mineral deposits that can inform us about how the Arctic responds in a warmer world. Such information is critical for improving predictions for the future. All of this came about because Gina’s mum asked her if she wanted to try caving when she was 13 years old. Gina was instantly hooked on the underground world. Years later, during the weekly university caving club social, an older caver (Charlie Self) introduced Gina to the knowledge that there are caves in Greenland. He kindly leant her all his research on the topic, as he too wanted to visit the caves. Each of those moments were important turning points in the journey to where we are today. Thank you to everyone who has supported the project over the years and thank you to Rolex for recognising the significance and supporting the next stage. #perpetualplanet #Rolex #RolexAwards #exploration #explore #explorer #GreenlandCaves #womeninstem #womeninscience #polarscience #polarexplorer #arctic @Rolex Universität Innsbruck Greenland Caves Project

If you enjoy seeing my photographs of exploration from our extreme subterranean world, but really struggle to see the scale of some of these giant caverns on your smartphone, check out @WindowSight. It is a great new app for displaying high quality art from your phone to your TV. #GetTheBigPicture #WindowSight @windowsight #internationalyearofcavesandkarst
