🚧 Black spot safety upgrades underway 🚧
Important road safety works have begun on Piggott Range Road where it intersects with Easton Road near Clarendon. This $1.55 million upgrade is entirely funded through the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program, following a nomination from the City of Onkaparinga due to the high levels of road trauma at this location.
While not all roads in our region fall under council responsibility, we actively advocate for improved road infrastructure and better traffic flows with both the Australian and state governments. These upgrades are a critical step toward ensuring safer journeys for everyone.

An exciting update on the redevelopment of our Aberfoyle Community Centre!
Expression of Interest for vacant community facility - Happy Valley Sports Park
This community facility, owned by the City of Onkaparinga, is located adjacent to the BMX track within the Happy Valley Sports Park. Due to the relocation of the former tenant, a rare opportunity now exists for not-for-profit associations that provide services to the broader community to occupy this building.
The facility is located within the Happy Valley Sports Park, Taylors Road West, Aberfoyle Park 5159. The sports park features an AFL oval, cricket pitches, netball courts, tennis courts, a fully-fenced playground, and a BMX track. Please note that the successful applicant(s) will be required to coordinate with the sports park users to manage public access to this facility due to multiple club usage at peak times.
The vacant facility consists of a large, carpeted open area, kitchen amenities with a canteen window, multiple toilets, and two small office areas, one of which was previously used as a first aid room.
Interested parties should note that it is not the intention of the City of Onkaparinga to invest in any building improvements or fund any new structures on the site. Funding for any intended building improvements, if required, would be the responsibility of the occupier, subject to council's consent and development approval.
We believe this building is suitable for sport, recreation, community club(s), group(s), or education provider(s) that can help us deliver important services to our community.
The level of occupancy for the successful applicant(s) will be dependent on the outcomes of this expression of interest process. Please note that submitting an expression of interest does not constitute an agreement between the City of Onkaparinga and the applicants, as there are several selection criteria that must be met.
Please submit your applications via the link below. Applications will close at 2pm on Friday 30 August 2024.
There will be two site inspections to view the facility on the following dates:
Monday 19 August 2024: 1pm to 1.30pm
Thursday 22 August 2024: 5pm to 5.30pm
For any enquiries concerning the Expression of Interest, please direct them to Brooke Sanders, Property Officer – Leasing, via email [email protected] or telephone (08) 8384 0666 during business hours.

🫒 We're saying goodbye to roadside feral olive trees, once and for good! 🌳
Feral European olive trees are a major pest, spreading rapidly and displacing native species, damaging habitats for our wildlife, and posing a significant bushfire hazard due to their high oil content.
But Biodiversity McLaren Vale, the City of Onkaparinga, and SA Power Networks are fighting back! 💪 We're joining forces to clear these pests from rural roadsides and replace them with native species to prevent the olives from returning. 🌿
Together, we’re protecting our environment and creating a safer, more sustainable future. 🌱

Clarendon has a rich history and so many stories to share.
CLARENDON, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Approx 1869
I'm reflecting on the early days of Clarendon today, and I came across a picture of some people on a stunning property. Although I don't know who these people are, life back then would have been much harder than today. According to the Clarendon Community Association website, apparently its residents had to walk to O'Halloran Hill (which by Google Maps is a 10.8 kilometre walk by existing roads) and then take a stagecoach to Adelaide to purchase supplies. Can you imagine having to do that these days?
The original photograph of this edited and colourised picture was taken in approximately 1869 by Daily and Fox. The image is "Clarendon (B 73750)" from the State Library of South Australia, Clarendon Collection. The unedited black-and-white picture can be found in the comments or the link below.
https://collections.slsa.sa.gov.au/resource/B+73750
The Library summarises, "Carte de visite view of Clarendon, South Australia, including a single-storey stone building surrounded by a post-and-rail fence, with another two-storey stone building behind it."
The State Library of South Australia provides the 'Place names of South Australia' document (link to the document is below):
"The Aborigines knew the district as 'toondilla' and the history of the town commenced on 21 October 1840 when section 801, Hundred of Noarlunga, was granted to Richard Blundell of Hooton, Chester, England. This land was conveyed to James Philcox in 1846, and a memorial in the General Registry Office recites the sale of several allotments in 'the township of Clarendon ... laid out by the said James Philcox.'
The balance of section 801 was conveyed to George Morphett in March 1848 who, at a later date, subdivided it and a letter from S. H. Curnow in 1908 persuaded Robney Cockburn that the said gentleman was the creator of the village.
The town was extended in 1855 when Joseph Hardy cut up a portion of section 800; in 1857, Richard Morphett created allotments on a portion of the same section. James Philcox left no record of why he christened the town 'Clarendon'." If you would like to read more, check out the website below:

An UPDATE from George 🐕 on the Taminga Way, Flagstaff Hill path upgrade
At the 21 May 2024 Council meeting, a petition was received regarding the installation of a footpath adjacent Taminga Way, Flagstaff Hill.
Following this meeting, SA Water contacted council to organise an on-site meeting to discuss this project further.
During the site meeting, staff discussed the history of the site including the petition which was received and completed a walkover whilst explaining the scope of works. As the site is located on land which is owned by SA Water but leased to council, it was important that SA Water representatives understood the extent of the proposed works, as well as the timeline for delivery.
SA Water advised that they did not foresee there being any issues with this project proceeding, however are unable to contribute funding towards this project. The project will therefore remain scheduled for delivery in the 2025-26 financial year, subject to budget approval. The project has been scoped and is currently in the design phase, with community engagement scheduled for completion before December 2024.
