It's been a fantastic start to the school year at Temple Marion Middle School. Day 1 began with the Middle Schoolers orienteering at Belair National Park and later in the week the Year 9's kicked off their Rite Journey challenges with a trip to Tree Climb Kuitpo Forest. It's been a great week of challenge, learning, and relationship building and we're excited for what's in store for 2024!

In Science our Year 7's have been learning about magnetism and electromagnets.
SteamRanger Heritage Railway kindly lent us some equipment that we used to perform electromagnetic particle crack defect testing in class.
This process uses an industrial electromagnet to draw iron particles into cracks in steel parts so they can be highlighted and then of course repaired. In class we tested a railway carriage bogie pivot, which will then be repaired and used in a train carriage on the Cockle Train service.
Students were able to get 'hands-on' with an engineering process that is often only carried out in specialised situations behind closed doors. This process really highlighted the uses of electromagnets in practical scenarios.

Yesterday was our annual Temple Marion Swimming Carnival. This is the culmination of a 4-week swimming program our students participate in each year at the SA Aquatics & Leisure Centre.
We're firm believers in every student participating and improving their swimming skills each year, and all our middle schoolers improved significantly during the program.
At the Carnival, every student swims in events at their level, and our top swimmers compete in the finals for freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly. Next are the team relays, and of course, there's always time for some fun and games in the pool to finish the day.
Congratulations to our overall swimming champs, Levi and Mienke, as well as each of our individual event winners for 2023!

“We must teach our children to smell the earth, to taste the rain, to touch the wind, to see things grow, to hear the sun rise and night fall – to care.” – John Cleal.
Our Term 4 Outdoor Learning Day was at the Mt Lofty Botanical Gardens. Our students engaged in a special poetry writing workshop with local poet Julie Wright, spent time creating botanical drawings and experienced the beauty of springtime flora and fauna as they explored the garden trails.

Navigating a se*ed-up world: How can we help our children resist harmful messages from media + pop culture and aspire to respectful relationships?

Have you noticed that your young people seem to be growing up too fast? They're worried about their appearance and more aware of se*ual issues at earlier stages? Children and young people are bombarded with hyperse*ualised messages from media and popular culture. Even small children are worried about their looks and physical appearance, shaped and conditioned at the earliest of ages by a dominant message that tells them they have to be ‘hot’ be liked and accepted. The lives of young people are increasingly socialised, conditioned and informed by exposure to p**n related content online. They are exposed to this content not only before they have had s*x, but often before their first kiss, with average age of first exposure 11. Exposed to a po*nified landscape, young people are ‘acting out’ through social media and se*ting, putting their bodies on display for attention and judgement. Drawing from current global literature on the subject, as well as the experiences of young people themselves, Melinda will explore with us how the proliferation of se*ualised images and messages contributes to a distorted view of bodies, relationships and s*xuality in young people, hampering their healthy physical emotional and social development. How can we address this toxic culture and raise happy, healthy, resilient young people who value their dignity and self-worth and aspire to relationships based on respect and authentic connection? Melinda will provide practical tips and resources to help us achieve this. Daniel will also contribute to the parent session on his work, especially with young men.
