I love everything about the food, wine & travel, and most of the times my descriptions are witty, satiric, full of remarks that most people find funny and amusing, but understood by even the simplest folk

2 versions of great Nebbiolo.
One grown in the hills not far away from me The Adelaide Hills and the other from the hills of Piemonte more precisely area called Diano d’Alba.

An incredible wine grown locally from 2007 vintage produced by Arrivo winery by Peter Godden and the other one by an amazing couple Giovanna Bagnasco and her partner Carlo Mondavi grandson of famous Robert Mondavi.

Arrivo is stylish, beautifully aged with dark cherry laced with orange peel and sandalwood character while the 2020 Sori della Sorba still in its infant stage with characters developing while exposed to the air.
Both wines are whimsical in their own right full of charisma showcasing how versatile Nebbiolo can really be.
Sori is just a baby showcasing characters many Barolo producers would be envy of, while Arrivo could easily be one of the best Aussie Nebb’s I have tasted in a while.
Both are screaming for some nibbles so slowly braised veal shank cooking at the moment will do them justice.
Remarkable how well integrated both are one with age and the other one just starting its journey to greatness.

2021 DOMAINE DIDIER PABIOT 'ELISA' POUILLY FUME | Vino with Micha 11/05/2024

A top natural winemaker in the Eastern Loire, Pabiot fashions mineral, complex Sauvignon Blanc.

One of Loire's youngest producers, Jonathan Didier Pabiot’s wines are organically certified and he employs many biodynamic principles in an effort to ensure that his wine gives a true representation of the magical terroirs of Pouilly-Fumé.
Consistently voted among the best winemakers in France, he is being touted as the successor to French winemaking superstar Didier Dagueneau – high praise indeed!

2021 DOMAINE DIDIER PABIOT 'ELISA' POUILLY FUME
Sold as Prélude until the 2020 vintage, the Pouilly Fumé Élisa offers freshness, brightness, minerality, and is energetic and well balanced.
It is based on four- to 12-year-old vines which are organic certified.
The palate offers flavors of grapefruit, mineral, light smoke, apricot, and pear. The finish is refreshing and structural.

Rushing to cook dinner for family I stopped at the local at Happy Valley and grabbed the whole Scotch Fillet.

I have to admit it was one of the most tender pieces of meat that I have ever bought at the supermarket as normally my meat comes from legendary Johnny from as nothing else compares.
Cooked medium rare it was juicy and an absolute joy.

To drink I opted for a nice bottle of Chianti (not Hannibal Lecter).
The 2019 Principe Corsini ‘Le Corti’ Chianti was an absolute delight
Sure i didn’t need an excuse to have a drink but this was a perfect match. Charry smoky steak with luscious silky well balanced Chianti full of blue fruits pleasant mouthfeel and fleshy mid palate.
Love how the finish is long and fruit driven despite some chewy tannins.
Who would have thought it was just Monday.

2009 ARRIVO ‘LUNGA MACERAZIONE’ NEBBIOLO

If this is not the best Australian Nebbiolo that you will ever try, then convince me and show me another as good as this one is.

I had the previous vintage of 2007 and loved it, but when Peter passed by my wine bar the other day and showed me the 2009 vintage, I thought I was in heaven.

Sourced from Gumeracha block, Peter created this wine with long term maceration of 72 days, intensifying the flavours of the variety and at the same time softening the tannin profile.

Remarkably fresh after 13 years of age, thanks to the stelvin closure. While chatting to Peter I noticed that this wine has not even started changing from its primary characters as the flavours of dark cherry and bitter cherry stone are still there, and with air while we chatting the nose starts to really open up and shows its real beauty. Aromatic and lifted with luscious rose petals, cherry and chamomile tea and hints of ginger spice are playing with my tastebuds.
The palate is equally inviting and generous with dark cherry up front, as its mid palate releases its savoury , mineraly component.
I love the ''Campari'' trademark flavours of tangelo, blood orange and hints of sandalwood, while approaching relatively tamed and soft tannins, making this wine even more enjoyable.
I could easily close my eyes and thinking of a Barolo, no doubts in my mind, as this is as close of an Australian Nebbiolo, that I have seen to be so meticulously crafted with its purity and varietal character.

If my tasting notes were not enticing enough come down to the on King William Street and try it yourself, we do offer it by the glass. Apologies for all non SA customers.

2011 TENUTA GREPPO BIONDI-SANTI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

The 2011 Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino is a gorgeous wine made in a elegant, refined, traditional style.

As this Brunello slowly unwinds, it eventually begins to show characteristics of cherries and mixed red wild berries followed by nuances of dried floral, minerals and mint. On the palate this is well-structured, impressing with its beautiful fine-grained, silky texture and remarkable finesse which follows through into the finish.

The 2011 is an age-worthy Brunello which shows excellent potential for a long future, however today it is still quite reserved, and will demand at least another five years of bottle age. (Best 2021-2035)

2020 SORI DELLA SORBA

Sori – means Cru, the best vineyard – the highest, best exposed vineyard, always south facing, where the sun is strongest and where the snow melts first.

In a steep, raw territory caught between the breezes of the Mediterranean Sea and fresh air of the Italian Alps is where the story of Sorì della Sorba begins. Sori della Sorba vineyard sits just 500 meters, or less than a quarter-mile, from the villages of Barolo.

Sori della Sorba vineyard is centered in the winemaking area known as Diano D’Alba. Half of Diano D’ Alba lies within the world famous Barolo wine region, and Sorì della Sorba is just outside of the famous DOCG. An area of great, world-class potential which is capable of sitting alongside the world’s finest.

In 2019, Giovanna Bagnasco (proprietor of Brandini in Barolo) and her life partner Carlo Mondavi (grandson of Robert and proprietor of Raen in Sonoma, CA) took the reins at this estate, and set about immediately converting the farming to organic with an eye towards permaculture. The first results, in a word, are stunning. A single-vineyard Langhe Nebbiolo of such elegance and finesse as to make Barolo producers jealous!

The Sori della Sorba site gives wine of incredible expression, structure, vibrancy, and elegance.

The 2020 vintage shows lifted aromas of crushed black cherries, rose petals, wet rock, savory herbs, and forest floor. On the pallet, the wine builds with wild berries, rose petals, orange pith, and damp forest floor and truffle. Fine grained tannins build as they hold together the delicate floral notes to an everlasting finish.

NV Larmandier-Bernier 'Latitude' Blanc de Blancs 1500ml | Vino with Micha 24/09/2022

2018 base with 40% reserve wines going back to 2004, disgorged in April 2020. Latitude is 100% Côte des Blancs Chardonnay from vineyards on the southern side of Vertus. These vineyards are on roughly the same latitude, hence the name, which also hints at the breadth of texture that the wines from these sites (having more clay in the soil) tend to offer up.

In the cellar, Larmandier uses mostly large format casks (almost all the wood now comes from Stockinger in Austria) with less and less reliance on steel tanks. The alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place naturally, and there is no fining or filtration. Bottles are matured over a period of more than two years, disgorged manually and dosed at low, extra brut levels (in this case, four grams per litre) a minimum of six months before release.

Pure and mineral, this, like all the recent bottlings, offers superb texture and stone-fruited depth without sacrificing the cut-diamond precision and citrusy, chalky energy that is a given from this area. In short, this is classic Larmandier—100% delicious and all class. This is a wine that is extremely versatile at the table, especially if served in a wine glass, and can even be decanted. It will pair with everything from fish, shellfish, terrines, any white meat dish, game and most cheeses (except blue or strong washed-rind).

Whipper Snapper Distillery

Founded in 2014, in Western Australia, Whipper Snapper is that rare Australian Whiskey distillery that doesn’t focus on single malt.
From the start they’ve explored production across different grains available to them from Western Australian producers.
Their products range from rye, barley, wheat and even quinoa whiskies but have resisted the temptation of making gin, as they would like to focus on whiskey and do it well.

Join us this Friday 12th August from 5pm till late and meet Jimmy McKeown Head Distiller and Co-founder of Whipper Snapper Distillery taste some of their products on show and maybe grab a bottle or two to take home.
We will make sure there are some food matching available with their whiskies, so it should be a fun night.

Well if that does not look like a great steak dinner I am not sure what really does.
1.46kg tomahawks steak, heirloom carrots and haricot vert all washed down with few glasses of red and bourbons.
