Documenting in challenging conditions 🦈✨
Part of my upcoming masterclass with @ccp_australia is learning how to document in challenging conditions - from learning what kind of training might be useful, preparing for a project and choosing locations to knowing when the pull the pin before it all goes pearshaped.

With time-sensitive projects, we often don’t get to pick a time and day for when we shoot - and even if we do the conditions, especially underwater, can change rapidly.

Preparation and working with the environment helps to create safer working conditions and therefore hopefully a successful project too!

To learn more about my upcoming masterclass follow the link in my bio. Submissions close 17th of February.

BTS Video: The morning of our dive we were informed that the visibility was only a few metres. As we were already on location with limited possibilities to postpone we decided to go ahead with the dive. What we weren’t expecting was the insane amount of surge. 🌊 We had a grand total of 5 minutes with these beautiful Grey Nurse Sharks before the conditions became too volatile and the divemaster led the group away. Sometimes with underwater capture, all you get is a few minutes but luckily we got to try again the next day in slightly more favourable conditions. 😌

A couple of outtakes from our recent project documenting the critically endangered Grey Nurse Sharks. 🦈 We had a small window of opportunity to document this project. I checked the weather every 5 seconds to try and find a good weather window while Sydney was preparing for an impending lockdown. We got lucky and the weather cleared up just in time for our dive day. However, the conditions underwater can change rapidly. The morning of our dive we were informed that the visibility was only a few metres. As we were already on location with limited possibilities to postpone we decided to go ahead with the dive. What we weren't expecting was the insane amount of surge. 🌊 I have certainly worked in challenging conditions before, but never while filming sharks in what felt like an underwater tornado while being thrown against rocks hoping not to get impaled on a sea urchin. 😂 🌪 Of course, the sharks didn't seem to be bothered by it at all. We had a grand total of 5 minutes with the Grey Nurse Sharks before the conditions became too volatile and the divemaster led the group away. We visited the site again on our second dive but the conditions were even worse. 🤷‍♀️ Sometimes with underwater capture, all you get is a few minutes. I am so proud of @timcharody.expeditiontotheedge and myself for capturing a few usable shots amongst the chaos. This was certainly quite a welcome back to scuba diving.😅 🎥 @timcharody.expeditiontotheedge #Underwater #Ocean #Wildlife #Nature #Sharks #GreyNurseSharks #UnderwaterPhotography #UnderwaterVideo #NSW #Australia #Forster #Worimi

Recently we had a wonderful opportunity to document one of the most endangered creatures that inhabit our waters - the Grey Nurse Sharks. It is estimated that there are only about 2000 left along the entire East Coast of Australia. The sharks can be elusive, during the day often found sheltering under rocky outcrops, caves, and ocean gutters. Sometimes however we can see them patrolling the ocean floor in as a little as few meters of water. I was beside myself when we spotted a Grey Nurse Shark in the shallows just off the beach. After we observed the body language for a few moments and we dropped underwater and shared a gentle encounter as this juvenile shark continued its patrol of the ocean floor. Sharks play an important role in the ecosystem. As apex predators, they help keep our oceans healthy by removing sick and weak prey, helping to ensure species diversity. And as we now know our survival depends on the health of the ocean which produces over 50% of the air that we breathe. It's truly a privilege to be able to share these moments with them. ✨🦈 There is still time to submit questions about the project, Grey Nurse Sharks, nature and underwater photography via @natgeoau q&a ( live in stories right now ) Head to @natgeoau to learn more BTS footage captured by Tim Charody @timcharody.expeditiontotheedge Music composed by Troels Thomasen @troels__thomasen #BeautyInOurBackyard #Nature #Underwater #Ocean #Sealife #GreyNurseShark #UnderwaterPhotography #UnderwaterVideo #Shark #SharkWeek #Worimi #NSW #Australia

A little while ago I wrote a blog post on how to get started in underwater photography. My last point in the blog is one that is most important to me and something I need to remember too: "Always play, go into the ocean just to swim and feel the water, go in non perfect conditions, at different times of day. Try different lenses, depths and explore. Go even when the visibility is horrible and it's raining. If you are like me, in that moment you probably won't feel like it. But that's exactly when you should go. Because you will always find something new and those are the experiences that will inform your work later on. We all have a different process but there is only one way to discover it 🌿 💫" Rest of the tips are in the link below: http://oceanwanderings.com/blog/2017/4/30/underwater-photography Video filmed by Scott Portelli / Music: Jaccob McKay Studios / Olympus AU

Humpback whales - Tonga, Vava'u
So excited to share a short behind the scenes of a project I have been working on for the last few years. It has been so great to see it start taking shape. This project is far from finished but it's been a wonderful journey discovering it. I have never really taken the time to reflect on what takes my mind into the place where I can actually feel and see the images I love to capture. So I started to write things down. Just short little snippets of thoughts and random things. I have always referred to my work as a film that someone cut up and scattered across the world and over the years I have collected images that speak to each other in some way but I have not yet worked out what the film is about. You can read some of those mind wanderings here: http://bit.ly/mishku-humpbackwhale Thank you to Scott Portelli and Jeremy Cresswell for capturing some beautiful footage of me being an underwater green ninja and to Olympus AU for your endless support. Humpback Whale Song
Yesterday we went to see documentary called Sonic Sea. It was so incredibly sad and beautiful. One of the segments described how sound is the gateway to a whales soul. The below clip is this years whale love song I shot in Tonga. The audio is of a male humpback singing so he can find his future mate. The song was recorded directly though the housing. If anyone wants to learn more about the documentary here is a link: http://www.sonicsea.org/ They are currently screening all across the globe Sonic Sea Olympus AU
