It's strange how life sometimes brings you back to where it all began, completing a circle you didn’t even realize was forming. Today, I'm back at Canning College—not as the eager young student from the Class of 1986, but as the “Canteen Uncle,” along with a few other “uncles” to form Chomp Chomp

Why am I here? It’s hard to put into words, but I feel like I owe something to this place, this special place that changed the course of my life in ways I never expected. Back in 1986, I arrived at Canning College from Singapore, a world of rote learning and strict rules, and found myself in a completely different universe. Here, they didn’t just teach us facts; they taught us to think, to question, to explore. The teachers weren’t distant authority figures; they were friends, mentors, and guides who treated us with respect and kindness. They encouraged creativity and critical thinking, showing us that education could be a journey, not a destination.

Those few short months at Canning College were transformative for me. I left with more than just knowledge—I left with a spark, a spirit of curiosity and a sense of possibility. The nurturing environment here helped me develop a tenacity I didn't even know I had, setting me on a path I never could have imagined.

And through all the twists and turns of my career—whether it was working in China, sharing international flavors with young Chinese colleagues, or introducing professional football players to their first taste of Thai food—the common thread has always been food. Food has been my way of connecting with people, of breaking down barriers, of sharing stories. I still remember the look on my colleagues' faces when they tasted curry for the first time in my little Beijing apartment in 1995. Those moments of discovery, of joy, of shared experience, have been some of the most meaningful of my life.

So now, here I am, back where it all started. This time, I’m hoping to give back to the students of Canning College in the way I know best: through food. I want to bring them a taste of home, a taste of the world, and hopefully, a little taste of what I felt all those years ago—the warmth, the connection, the sense of belonging. We “uncles” want to serve up something more than just meals; we want to offer a small slice of comfort, a reminder that food can be a bridge between cultures, a celebration of humanity.

I believe that what we eat shapes who we become, and I hope that through these home-style meals, we can inspire the students to start their own journeys of health, curiosity, and discovery. It’s my way of saying thank you to this place, this community, that gave me so much.

It’s good to be back.

Meet Niza, Canning College Class of 2013! 🎓 During COVID-19, she was so homesick, she started her Simpul Ice Poles business in 2020. Now she has come full circle and brought Simpul back to Canning College to share with the students! 🍦 Her story shows that with a bit of creativity, you can turn challenges into sweet opportunities. Keep dreaming big, Canning College students—you never know where it might take you! 🌟
