“But first, coffee.”

This phrase is essentially the guiding philosophy for most 30+ year olds I know.

But is it a smart move for those with anxiety?

Some studies show that consuming more than 200 mg of caffeine (about the amount in just two cups of coffee) can increase the likelihood of anxiety and panic attacks in people sensitive to it.

So should you still cut back?

Not necessarily.

It’s a question of dosage.

Coffee absolutely picks you up, and it improves cognition and athletic performance.

But too much of most things backfires.

If you suffer with anxiety, cut back on the coffee for one week and log your symptoms each day.

If you feel better and your symptoms ease, it’s a no brainier.

ORTHOREXIA ~

When healthy eating becomes an unhealthy obsession.

While there is no category specific to Orthorexia, the disorder is in fact captured in the DSM-5.

Specifically, Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a broad diagnostic category that holds Orthorexia as well as other eating or feeding disturbances.

Mental health fluctates in the same way physical health does.

If this is the case, why is there still shame associated with taking time off work for anxiety, depression, stress or burn out.

World Mental Health Day is an international day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma.

The more we learn and understand, the less we judge and stigmatise.

Sound exhausting?

Racing thoughts and overthinking is a hallmark symptoms of anxiety.

Racing thoughts can results in cognitive fatigue and brain fog,

which often makes people feel even more anxious than they did initially.

How do we break the cycle?

One technique is to develop a daily mindfulness practice.

Mindfulness is a skill and requires repetition in order for it to be effective.

Someone with high functioning anxiety may be the picture of success.

In many ways, their anxiety propels them forward.

They might arrive to work earlier than everyone else, impeccably dressed, with your hair neatly styled.

What others might not know is that beneath the surface of a seemingly perfect exterior, they’re fighting a constant churn of anxiety.

High-functioning anxiety is not considered a mental health diagnosis.

It's more commonly labelled as “mild anxiety” as the individual appears to be functioning pretty well.

Symptoms can still be problematic if they take away from their overall quality of life

Heads up. Our bodies aren’t meant to stay the same.
Just like our life goals and priorities.
Sometimes life goals leave less time for body goals.
And that’s OK.
E.g.,
Renovating a house.
Stepping into a new role.
Managing increased demands at work.
Having a baby.
Studying.
Setting up a business.
Adjusting to the “new normal”.
Requires energy and effort.
Accepting and appreciating our bodies at every stage is crucial to our well-being.
Not for how it looks, but for what it does for us.

PMDD is listed in the DSM-IV as a "depressive disorder not otherwise specified."

is remarkably similar to those of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).

PMDD symptoms include:

Markedly depressed mood. A symptom of MDD is depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day.

Decreased interest in usual activities. One criterion for MDD is markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all activities.

Lethargy, fatigability or lack of energy. Similarly, patients with MDD have fatigue or loss of energy.

Hypersomnia or insomnia--also symptoms of MDD.

The difference between PMDD and MDD is that PMDD symptoms are cyclical, subsiding with onset of me**es.

Q - Which form of exercise is better for managing PCOS?

A - The one you can commit to doing regularly 🙃

*sorry, not very sexy, but that’s what the research says.

Misinformation often deters women with PCOS from exercising.

When exercise has heaps of beneficial effects for PCOS symptoms.

*yes we’re aware that PCOS is complex and manifests in different ways. But generally regular movement = less symptoms.

A literature review of studies published in the journal Sports Medicine regarding types of exercises, such as strength training and aerobic activity, did not find one specific exercise type was the most beneficial to women with PCOS.

Concluding that the best exercise is what you will do regularly.

Do you feel like your experience of PMS is a lot more severe than others?

It may be PMDD.

Symptoms include mood disturbances which impact work and relationships, intense anxiety, feelings of overwhelm, low mood, loss of interest in activities you generally enjoy, sensitivity to rejection and more.

Notably, symptoms are present in the final week before the onset of me**es, and start to improve within a few days after the onset of me**es, and become minimal or absent in the week postme**es

PMDD can severely affect a women’s quality of life.

The more awareness, the better.

Inositols may help improve symptoms of PCOS - according to new research 📚

Inositols are polyalcohols.

Data has demonstrated the efficacy to improve ovarian morphology in PCOS women.

This means they can help to improve symptoms of PCOS, alongside other dietary interventions and in combination with exercise.

PLEASE NOTE.

Inositols are found in fiber rich foods like beans, or in citrus fruits. But the availability from foods is quite low and supplementation is recommended to get an effective dose.

Did you know that maintaining optimal testosterone levels is important for women too.

Hormone levels continually change, rising and falling by the minute.

Testosterone levels typically decline with age, both in men and in women.

But sometimes, the balance shifts in the opposite direction, and testosterone, rather than drop, will climb.

About 10% of women with high testosterone also high PCOS.

If you suspect high testosterone, talk to your health care provider, who can perform a physical examination and laboratory tests, depending on your symptoms, for confirmation.
