I’ve noticed that any time we do a lesson where we sketch first, the kids get REALLY excited. So I thought today we would start with our pencils and have a good long sketching lesson about shading. Like most lessons that seem a little more complicated, they were freaked out in the beginning but did a good job catching on and enjoying the process. We were so into it that I forgot to capture any action shots and got a few videos of their finished sketches right at the end. 5 types of shading we discussed: 1. Hatching - single one direction line, gets thicker and darker as you get to the more shaded areas. 2. Cross hatching - 2 hatching lines going perpendicular to each other. Getting more frequent and darker for the heavily shaded areas 3. Stippling - dots forever 😂. This takes the longest but it’s my favorite one! Start with a single layer of dots and increase the number in the mid section and continue increasing number in the darkest sections. 4. Scumbling - small circle strokes, starting light towards the light source and increasing frequency and pressure as it gets to the darkest shades. 5. Smudging - light strokes in the darker areas, use finger to smudge the pencil lightly up into the lightest areas, keeping the bright area untouched. Add more pencil to darken and keep smudging. Sylvester Mubayi - 1942- 13/12/22

It’s with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of the greatest first generation sculptors, Sylvester Mubayi.

Born in 1942 in the Chiota Reserve, near Marondera. After leaving school Sylvester worked as a to***co grader and moved to Harare in 1966 to seek employment at the Chibuku Breweries. In 1967 he joined the Sculptors Community at Tengenenge. Later he was a founder member of the Vukutu Workshop School established by Frank McEwen who much later in 1987 said of him “Certainly when I knew him he was by far the greatest sculptor there…. I have tremendous admiration for him… some of his work is as great as anything in the world”.��He exhibited extensively since 1968 in many parts of the world and has work in major collections in Europe and North America.
