🌺 Sikaiana 🌺

212 kilometres NE of Malaita in Solomon Islands in the south Pacific Ocean, you’ll find the island of Sikaiana. It is almost 14 kilometres in length and its lagoon, known as Te Moana, is totally enclosed by the coral reef.

I decided to choose black and white for the characters skin and hair to represent the presence of the people is fading from the atoll, as most of us know the scary reality of the rising sea level most islands in the Solomon’s are facing and especially in this island, most people are seeking refuge in the main lands.

It goes for most of our islands in the pacific. Knowing the experience of moving from one country to another, or even settling in a new home away from home… it can dull our spirit and we can feel like fish out of water sometimes and it takes time to regain our vibrant selves.

I always feel guilty drawing myself, but this time it was a pretty decent experience. My cartoon style measurements are slowly adapting but I did my best to get all my features.

As I was drawing I thought about the amount of reasons resulting of peoples resting face. Also how much it changes over the years.

I see myself in all my little siblings and I always ask myself when did I become the way I am now, they remind me every day how exciting everything really is when you’re not constantly seeing the bigger picture. I mean it’s good seeing the bigger picture and planning and you know, doing the adult stuff… but it’s also important to be here. Like right where you are now. Not fully absorbed in what you think will happen, how you look ect…

something I appreciate so much about these couple of months is that the weird and the stutter and the awkward moments is truly the most beautiful experiences we have in life. 💙

Anyways that was the thought process during this drawing.

⛈Coping With Grief🌦

I’d firstly like to send love to everyone affected by a recent loss. Acknowledging the loss of our own little island princess Mary.

This injustice brings back too many dark and emotional memories so instead of getting into it, I want to help ease pain for the ones grieving.

Helpful reminders that helped cope with grief:

👣 Talking - Talking to a trusted friend or family will make it easier to express your thoughts, feelings and emotions in to words and in turn make it a little bit easier to deal with.

👣 Writing/Drawing - if you’re not good at talking about your feelings, you may find it easier to write them. Maybe drawing graphs or facial expressions or just anything similar to how you’re feeling.

👣 Crying - “For everything there is an appointed time… even a time to weep” Ecc 3:1,4. Your body releases endorphins and oxytocin, chemicals that pretty much help boost your mood to deal with things a little easier.

For me it’s about setting an example, guiding both your inner child and the one you gave birth to, the lava lava is both creating a safe environment and boundaries for you both. Some of you may know what purple orchids symbolises (I used magenta as i wanted to add more red for courage) but for those who don’t, it’s mostly admiration.

Grey area.

All artists have art blocks, I didn’t know mine was going to go for this long. Art blocks are not only having lack of ideas, for me it’s having so many ideas but they’re just not right. It’s feeling insecure about past work and overwhelmed by the amount of drafts and sketches I have but can’t seem to finish.

Sometimes people need to see you fall, so they can witness how much effort you put in to try getting back up.

From me to whoever is also having a “grey area” 😅 I encourage you to have fun with it, you can’t always be great all the time.

Ontong Java/Lord Howe/Luangiua

In any given celebrations or just performing arts, liunguia/Otong Java/Lord Howe women cover themselves with tumeric when dancing. I have not yet come across any research or tales as to the reason behind the act but it has been well known, tumeric is really good for the skin ✨that glow ✨

Some say the ancestors of the present population arrived from Ngiua (the island is now unidentifiable) and named their new home “Lua ngiua” which is “second nguia”. Others say they arrived from north Ko olau which could be Kiribati or Tuvalu.

Otong Java /Lord Howe/luangiua is incorporated into Malaita Province.
