Did you know October is LGBTQIA+ History Month in Australia? It coincides with National Coming Out Day on October 11. This month isn't just about remembering how events of the past have shaped LGBTQIA+ rights (although that's important too!), it's also a time to celebrate the amazing contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community to society. As part of this month, we recently hosted Zee Hankins to discuss LGBTQIA+ equality in the workplace and their personal experiences.
Here at ASA, we're proud to be a youth-focused employer with a strong emphasis on inclusion. As an organisation where 80% of our team is neurodivergent, we understand the importance of creating a supportive and empathetic environment for everyone. This includes fostering a workplace that celebrates diversity in gender identity and sexual orientation, as 20% of our team identifies as LGBTQIA+.

It’s a great read and features our CEO, Geoffrey Smith, and Lead Data Analyst Anthony Porter, who discuss how small adjustments can enable to thrive.
Here’s a quote from Geoff: “My advice for young (neurodivergent) people looking for a job is to try and find that alternative pathway by harnessing your strengths. See yourself as an asset. See your condition as an asset. And then don’t be afraid of the life coaching you may need prior to employment or during employment. That kind of scaffolding is important.”

Anthony Porter is a Lead Data Analyst who started his first-ever job in our Brisbane office, working on various geospatial projects. He joined us when he was on a Disability Support Pension. However, after being supported, he became a leader and relocated to to continue his career. In fact, he has terminated his pension because he found a sustainable career with us.
Here’s a great quote from him: “As a leader, I find it quite helpful to have similar experiences to the people I'm working with and be able to apply what I've learned to help them develop. It's just about being accepting and looking at what neurodivergent people can provide and then finding out what ways they can accommodate that person to get the best results.”
