A very important reminder leading into the crazy Christmas party season 🎄
The changes in absorption following weight loss surgery means that alcohol is delivered more quickly into the bloodstream, causing higher and longer peaks in blood alcohol level.
This is the difference between losing your licence or not.
Following weight loss surgery, if you plan to drink, plan not to drive.
Even one standard drink could put you over the limit.

Dr Werapitiya’s rates are extremely competitive, including his recently introduced package option for uninsured clients. He is very experienced in all bariatric surgery procedures, including the sleeve gastrectomy, omega-loop gastric bypass & SADI-S. Grazing is one of the key causes of weight plateaus and weight regain following weight loss surgery.
Unfortunately it is a behaviour your sleeve or bypass struggles to work with.
It is a loophole which can lead you to eat far more than you would if you limited your meals and snacks to 10-20 minutes.
A few examples of grazing include:
✔️ Sipping on a large milky coffee or smoothie all morning
✔️ Nibbling on a bowl of nuts over the afternoon
✔️ Taking an hour to eat your dinner.
Grazing is just one of the many 'common culprits' involved in plateaus and regain that we tackle head on in our Smash Plateaus and Reverse Regain online course. All the details are here ==> https://nfwls.org/nq5
Plateaus are a normal AND expected part of the weight loss surgery journey, but this doesn't make them any less scary!
Sometimes your body is just taking a moment to pause, and things soon sort themselves out.
But sometimes you are being tripped up by 'Common Culprits' that lead to stalls and that you can change to start losing weight again!
Swipe for three 'Common Culprits' that might be letting you down.
We show you exactly how to manage these 'Common Culprits' in our Smash Plateaus and Reverse Regain online course ==> https://nfwls.org/SPRR
What’s on the menu for dinner at your place tonight? It’s pretty chilly down here in Busso so we’re warming ourselves up with a tasty kid-friendly curry. Based on a traditional butter chicken recipe but we added tomato, spinach, chickpeas & cauliflower for an extra vegetable & fibre boost. A big dollop of high protein natural yoghurt on top cools it down for those who don’t like too much spice & also adds extra calcium & protein. Yum! 😋
Bit of Sunday morning broccoli humour 😂
Nourish WA is now stocking Barinutrics Calcium Chews. With each chew containing 500mg of calcium (in the form of highly absorbable calcium citrate) and 500IU Vitamin D, they are easy way to meet your post-op requirements. But best of all, they taste great!! They come in raspberry, pineapple/mango and chocolate flavours & each tub is $34.95. Send me a PM if you’d like me to set one aside for your next appointment
We have noticed the word 'dumping' being used a lot in weight loss surgery circles and suspect it is being overused.
Needing to go to the toilet in a hurry is not necessarily dumping.
It can be, but dumping generally has a greater impact on the body.
There are two types of dumping:
1. Early dumping, which occurs 30-60 minutes after eating and can last up to 60 minutes. It occurs when sugars or carbs empty rapidly from the pouch or sleeve into the small intestine. This causes the release of hormones that effect blood pressure, heart rate, skin flushing and faster movement of food through your digestive system. Symptoms can include sweating, flushing, lightheadedness, elevated heart rate, palpitations, a need to lie down, nausea, diarrhoea, cramping and noisy bowels sounds.
2. Late dumping occurs 1-3 hours after eating. Late dumping symptoms are related to an oversupply of insulin, as your body is trying to deal with extra sugar or high GI carbs. This extra insulin causes hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar levels). Symptoms are related to the low blood sugar levels and include sweating, shakiness, loss of concentration, hunger and fainting or passing out.
It may be that some adjustments to your diet help manage dumping syndromes. An expert in this area, endocrinologist Dr Gaurav Puri says “The best thing you can do is modify the diet. Slowly digested carbohydrate, less of it, more often.” This is something that you generally need to work closely with a dietitian specialised in weight loss surgery to negotiate a plan.
If this does not help, there are also a range of medications that are available which may assist in managing symptoms (in conjunction with dietary change), if symptoms do persist long term.
Be sure to contact your team if you are concerned and need help managing this.
Sally and Justine 😊
Nourish WA is now stocking Pepti Pro Collagen in both Original and Multi Collagen. There’s one thing we want to tell the whole world about. That the gut and brain are, in fact, linked. 🔗
What better way to start this conversation than with our visual identity. We’re proud to present a new logo that encompasses a key insight about IBS – the brain (the circle) is connected to the gut (the semi-circle).
As always, you can download us from the App Store and Google Play Store. Look for this logo!
Calcium supplements can be hard work! After bariatric surgery, calcium absorption changes & the most common calcium supplements (made from calcium carbonate) are poorly absorbed. So following a sleeve or bypass supplements made from calcium citrate are the gold standard but they can be hard to find.
One of the best supplements on the market at the moment is Swisse Calcium & Vitamin D because it is calcium citrate-based, relatively inexpensive & easy to find - just throw it in your trolley when you’re doing your supermarket shopping. But the tablets are BIG!! Many of my clients have difficulty swallowing these horse-sized tablets.
So we were thrilled to come across Barinutrics Calcium Chews recently. They are made for calcium citrate, chewable & best of all, they actually taste good (the raspberry & pineapple flavour taste like Star Burst!) Available from our mates at Cost Price Supplements, they are a bit more expensive than the Swisse tablets, but with the multi-buy discount & code “nourish15” for 15% off that Cost Price offers Nourish WA clients, they won’t completely blow the budget. And best of all, they make taking your calcium supplements easy & enjoyable again. The hardest part will be stopping at just two a day!!
Barinutrics - Calcium Chewy Bite 60 Chews | Cost Price Supplements Australia BariNutrics® Calcium Chewy Bites are scientifically formulated to support bariatric surgery patients. Take at any time of day!
Weight loss surgery is challenging, both physically and mentally.
It is an amazing tool, but it certainly doesn’t do all the hard work for you.
Deciding to have weight loss surgery is courageous.
Be so proud of that decision.
Justine 💛

Adequate Vitamin B12 supplementation is very important after bariatric surgery, as your body no longer digests & absorbs it effectively from food. Watch out for these signs & symptoms that you may need some extra B12 in your life - even if your blood levels are within the normal range
Vitamin B12 deficiency is extremely common at the 2-3 year mark after Bariatric Surgery. B12 helps our DNA to stay healthy, our blood to form well, and protects our nervous system. Here are four signs you may need a Vitamin B12 boost🤔.
By taking a B12 supplement like BN B12, you’ll experience the difference it can make your day and stop brain fog post-surgery. Our BN B12 can support your needs*🤗.
