Dear Kornelis,

I love Australia. I remember visiting Perth with my family for the first time in 1997, and running around the foreshore!
We were gobsmacked that there were no barbwire fences, public transport was reliable and clean - and a trolley of groceries cost $100 and lasted a whole month!

Australians were laidback, friendly, and hospitable. Australia was the best kept secret – compatible with anyone who was willing to work hard, and enjoy the Aussie way of life.

This didn’t imply we were to abandon our culture or heritage; it meant this country cared about social cohesion. It encouraged integration because it led to healthy communities. One, but many.

As we settled into our new life, the family Aussie day barbecue became a compulsory event in our calendar. Our 'boerewors' sausages grilled side by side with the mighty shrimp and snag It was a lovely time of building friendships and we were grateful to call this place home.

Finally – no more fear, but freedom.
As I reflect on those early years and where we are now, it is disheartening that we are still struggling to move on and celebrate the positive aspects that bind us a Nation – and what we can achieve together!

Using Australia Day as a political football is harmful.

In my 23 years of being in Australia and having worked extensively with Aboriginal communities all over the Nation, not once have I heard a negative comment about Australia Day.

Celebrating Australia Day on January 26 does not ignore past wrongs. It creates an opportunity.

Australia has and continues to recognise the hurts and atrocities inflicted upon Aboriginal communities. Apology Day (Feb 15), National Close the Gap Day (Apr 2), Sorry Day (May 26), Reconciliation Week (May 27-June 3), and NAIDOC Week (July 8-15). All necessary to enable the process of healing.

However, somewhere we need to decide when it is time to move beyond and change the narrative. Restoration takes time but the ultimate goal must always be to propel people forward.

Surely, it is more advantageous to redirect our efforts and become positive voices of hope for the sake of our younger generation? I like Aussie Day memorabilia as much as the next person - but really, who cares where we can or can't buy it. There are bigger issues worth amplifying- some in our own backyard!

More than ever, we need leaders who can inspire hope, not fear. Leaders who can cultivate unity, not division.

The only way forward is to push back and support voices like Australian Christians' candidates, who are serious about promoting hope and a future.

And so, this Australia Day, I look forward to putting a boerewors and shrimp on the barbie. I look forward to celebrating the good.

But most importantly, I look forward to praying for Australia alongside others at my church - thanking my Heavenly Father for the privilege of serving here and calling this Great Southland, home.
