This morning our CEO Kate Pounder gave the keynote address at the Startup to Scaleup Summit hosted by Stream Labs

Kate shared her insights and findings from TCA research into the Australian tech landscape in the address.

Australia's tech sector is growing rapidly, presenting a wealth of opportunities for entrepreneurs to innovate, flourish, and solve some of our most complex problems. However, there are also some major barriers to scaling Australian start-ups into globally successful tech firms.

This includes the maturity of our capital markets for investments beyond series B, shortages for experienced, technical roles, and regulatory barriers. If we can address these issues, we can support the creation of even more high-value, high-wage jobs, improve productivity across the economy and improve the lives of Australians.

Thanks to Stream Labs for hosting a fantastic event and providing a valuable platform for conversations and collaborations within the Australian tech community.

In a recent address to the House Standing Committee on Employment, Education, and Training, Ryan Black, Head of Public Policy at TCA, outlined our vision for generative AI in education.

In a recent report, we forecast that generative AI could contribute between $45 billion and $115 billion in annual economic value for Australia by 2030. These benefits will come from productivity improvements of adopting generative AI in existing industries such as healthcare, retail, manufacturing and professional services, as well as the creation of new jobs and businesses through AI innovation.

Australia's capacity to realise this major economic opportunity will depend on our ability to build a digitally skilled and literate workforce that can effectively utilise these new and emerging tools. Our education system has a central role to play here, including our schools, the VET sector and universities.

While there are always risks with introducing new technologies in the education system, past experience shows that they can be overcome with thoughtful and careful implementation.

To create a stronger tech ecosystem for startups and scaleups, the Tech Council have identified six recommendations for policy changes needed by the federal government. Our framework for maximising the tech sector’s shots on goal includes:

1. Set the strategic direction for Australia's tech sector
2. Expand investment into Australia’s startups
3. Enable more Australians to move into tech jobs
4. Ensure policies affecting the global integration of Australia’s tech ecosystem are working efficiently and effectively
5. Ensure regulatory frameworks and processes support the growth of the tech sector
6. Regularly measure and review progress towards making Australia the best place to start and scale a tech company

With this framework, the TCA provides a roadmap to boost our startup and scaleup ecosystem. Explore our recommendations in more detail in our full report here: https://techcouncil.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Shots-on-Goal-vF.pdf?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=Zoho+Social

Generative AI holds the potential to deliver $45-115B to Australia's economy. Achieving this will require us to support successful adoption across regions and industries and by reskilling and upskilling our workforce.

Certain regions or communities may face barriers in accessing and benefiting from Generative AI. To address this risk, governments will need to prioritise initiatives that bridge the digital divide, such as by improving digital infrastructure or establishing funding programs to support small and medium-sized enterprises in adopting the technology.

The full labour force benefits of Generative AI will also only be realised if governments and industries collaborate to support reskilling and upskilling programs, with a focus on emerging industries and occupations, and emphasising digital literacy, data analysis, critical thinking, and creativity.

Since the early 2000s, Australia has also seen a rapid rise in tech jobs. In fact, over the last 20 years, tech jobs have grown twice as fast as all other jobs!

But tech jobs aren’t just growing – they're thriving. Quickly becoming some of the most productive in the Australian economy, tech jobs now boast the second-highest hourly productivity of any sector. With productivity growth in Australia at a 60-year low, growing our tech workforce is key to securing our future living standards.

This rapid growth and high productivity translates into prosperity for the wider Australian economic landscape. Learn more about how we can boost the tech sector and keep expanding our reach and impact in our report, Shots on Goal: https://techcouncil.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Shots-on-Goal-vF.pdf?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=Zoho+Social

Whilst Australia’s tech ecosystem is a great place for startups, our research shows the path from startup to scaleup is often met with a distinct challenge – access to experienced talent.

In fact, only 1% of Australia’s tech workers have scaleup experience, compared to 13% in the US and 17% in Singapore.

This data highlights that, whilst Australia has no shortage of great tech talent, we may not always have the right mix of skills and experience to compete globally.

Providing our startups with the right talent isn’t just a goal – it’s a crucial ingredient that will enable our tech sector to thrive! This is why skilled migration is such an important part of addressing tech workforce challenges, alongside the domestic skills and training system.

Australia’s start-up ecosystem is an amazing place to start a company – but research shows scaling up presents unique challenges.

So why does scaling matter? High-growth firms drive even greater economic growth, create more jobs and fuel innovation. Lower levels of scaleup funding highlight how our tech sector is still in its early stages compared to markets such as the US – fixing our scaleup funding challenges is vital if we want to boost the success of the Australian tech sector on a global scale.

Government initiatives like the National Reconstruction Fund and Breakthrough Victoria are already taking steps to address this gap, providing the financial support that startups need to grow. However, funding programs such as these are not the only support our startups need – complimentary policies that attract co-investment and foreign investment are also vital in ensuring our tech ecosystem is the best place in the world to scale.

Explore our framework to make Australia the best place to scale in our full report, Shots on Goal, here: https://techcouncil.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Shots-on-Goal-vF.pdf?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=Zoho+Social
