Do you have a worthiness crutch going on? There's a difference between healthy striving and perfectionism.

You don't need to be perfect, to be loved.

"When perfectionism is driving, shame is always riding shotgun."

Wise words. Slow down, and wait for the beat drop.

The hustle has become the norm. The rushed feeling, next hit of adrenaline, drama, social media, life. It moves fast. It is constant. It is draining. And yet, in amongst it all, are these glimmers of magic often gone unseen.

We just fell out of love, life got busy, work took priority, kids changed things. The reasons people land in my office are endless and it leads me to ponder a lot about human dynamics. How and why does our society keeps churning and burning through relationships. Why are our su***de rates sky rocketing? When did it become the norm to prescribe medication instead of therapy to work on the root cause of the problem? Why is everyone so dissatisfied with life?

And I wonder “are we just missing the magic?”

Those micro-moments in life. The smiles, giggles, simple gestures. The moment the beat drops, the smell of fresh coffee, the crashing sound of the ocean. The small pleasures in life. The magic moments.

Social media conditions us to want more, need more, be more. Extravagant, OTT, unmaintainable standards.

What if the key to contentment is lost in the distractions?

What if we put down our heavy loads and marinate in the magic moments a little more, each day. I challenge you to.🌻

Shame keeps us from healing. Pain doesn't mean you're defective. Let's treat self-medication better than we have.

They called it addiction after they found out about it.

For a while though it gave me somewhere to go that didn’t hurt.

Somewhere I could go to hear myself or not.

Something that helped me be around people and feel like I belonged.

After a while, I stopped relying on it to live and I started living.

I found places that didn’t hurt.

I learnt how to hear myself properly.

People, well that may always be a struggle because I have wounds that run deeper and bleed further than even I knew, but I also learnt that I wasn’t alone maybe that’s the beginning of belonging.

They called it addiction after they found out about it but for me it wasn’t that.

It was somewhere I went for a while to stop hurting.

In the end it was somewhere I went that helped me find myself.

But they called it addiction this thing I told them about that I did for such a short time that no-one knew about.

I told them after I stopped because I was being brave and they were my family.

Some of them still don’t speak to me.

Because I went away somewhere and came back on my own.

They didn’t even know, I didn’t hurt anyone but myself but now they say I was a drug addict and they don’t speak to me.

It’s been four years since then.

And I don’t feel bad about it anymore.

I made choices, they made choices.

I can’t change mine, I can’t change theirs.

I wish them all the best and will be there if they ever fall because I know what it feels like to fall and be alone.

But feel bad?

I’ll never do that.

❤️ Trudi Jane

Narrative Therapy (Draft) Charter of Story-Telling Rights by David Denborough

Article 1 Everyone has the right to define their experiences and problems in their own words and terms.

Article 2 Everyone has the right for their life to be understood in the context of what they have been through and in the context of their relationships with others.

Article 3 Everyone has the right to invite others who are important to them to be involved in the process of reclaiming their life from the effects of trauma.

Article 4 Everyone has the right to be free from having problems caused by trauma and injustice located inside them, internally, as if there is some deficit in them. The person is not the problem, the problem is the problem.

Article 5 Everyone has the right for their responses to trauma to be acknowledged. No one is a passive recipient of trauma. People always respond. People always protest injustice.

Article 6 Everyone has the right to have their skills and knowledges of survival respected, honoured and acknowledged.

Article 7 Everyone has the right to know and experience that what they have learnt through hardship can make a contribution to others in similar situations.

Tuesday's Topic: What is Narrative Therapy and How Can it Help?

Narrative Therapy is a powerful tool created from post-structural theories established by Michael White and co-founder David Epston. It reminds us that we have the power to re-write our own stories. For example, a story we might tell ourselves might be, “I have anxiety, I can’t maintain friendships”. Re-writing this narrative allows us to re-frame how view ourselves, and instead of identifying with our issue (in this case anxiety) we separate it from ourselves. So instead we might say, “anxiety tries to trick me sometimes into thinking I can’t maintain friendships”. Further to this, we might add a positive re-frame by challenging the thought. If I’m, in that moment, convinced that anxiety stops me from forming meaningful connections, what evidence do I have to back this up? I then think of all of the lovely friendships I’ve had over many years. Narrative Therapy allows us to explore issues as separate from ourselves, making them easier to confront. It is a beautiful process of self-exploration and empowers us to be the author and artist of our own lives and lived experiences.

A wonderful, simple tip for helping improve the tone of the vagus nerve.

Did you know the vagus nerve is part of your parasympathetic nervous system and connects many of your organs and the communications between them?
If your vagal tone is low you may experience problems in the body, like inflammation, gut issues and anxiety to name just a few.
There are many simple ways to tone the vagus nerve including singing, deep breathing and meditation but a truly simple act you can do throughout the day to activate your vagus nerve is to splash your face with cold water.
I remember on 9 / 11 the overwhelming anxiety that I felt that day - while I may not have known it at the time, my vagus nerve was affected by the response to that tragic world event. I was at work at the time and called my yoga teacher to ask how to respond to this. She told me to splash my face with cold water and include my hands up to elbows and to repeat it when I felt anxious. I did that and instantly felt relief. It was then that I was free to respond in a positive way to others instead of becoming anxious.

15/09/2021

A handy little visual from my teacher training. Yoga has so many benefits and doesn't have to be difficult. Just ten minutes a day can make a huge difference to your posture, flexibility, nervous system and stress levels. Even five minutes a day is proven to boost metabolism and aid sleep.

Reflecting with a friend today. Enthusiastic agreement on both sides that those with the gift of bi-polarity feel the change in seasons deeply. Winter has a deep, unique and potent magic about it, for which I'm grateful. Spring on the other hand brings hope, lightness of spirit and a renewed sense of playfulness and community. So glad to see the markers begin to arrive.
