Coming from regional area in South Australia and a low socio-economic household, I have faced many barriers along my journey to study at the ANU. However, it was the longevity of my aspiration which motivated me to continue and allowed me to fight for so long to make it a reality. My name is Elijah Smith. I have just completed my second year of university and am studying a Bachelor of Public Policy.
I have been aspiring to go to the ANU since I was in year 6, after I visited Canberra and fell in love with the aesthetics and politics. I am very interested in politics and wanted to enter the field since a young age. As someone from a struggling background who also identifies as part of the q***r community, I want to represent the communities which I have come from and am a part of, as well as those which I have seen. I would like to give a voice to individuals who are often not heard as clearly as others.
I chose the ANU as the university I wanted to study at due to its involvement in the political sphere. I visited Canberra again when I was in year 10 and engaged with ANU during the Rotary Citizenship Program. I came back in year 11, and at this point I knew I wanted to study in Canberra. The ANU is connected to politics and is one of the best for studying the field. I knew that studying here would allow me to build upon my network and appreciate the connectivity of Canberra. The university also offered an early admissions program, which took the stress out of enrolling.
My university experience so far has been a positive one. I have been lucky enough to engage with multiple areas of the university, especially the student body. I have been involved in the residential community at UniLodge, Clubs Council, a range of clubs and societies, and the politics community. I have also run for ANUSA twice. These experiences have provided me with holistic interactions. I have engaged with people from different backgrounds and with different passions and ideas. First-Year Experience (FYE) was the program which introduced me to the ANU community and provided me with the people and support I needed to immerse myself into university life. This, for me, has been the most important aspect of the program.
I found out about FYE after hearing students talking about one of their camps. I later saw that I had received a few emails from FYE. I wondered if I was able to join the program and attend the camp, which luckily I was. The camp included team-building activities and allowed me to meet new people and engage with staff. I am grateful for this support, as social change and financial implications were the two biggest challenges for me when adjusting to university life. I had to get used to being around so many people and engage with students from different backgrounds. I also found it difficult to develop my social skills at university, as many socialisation activities, such as meeting a friend for coffee, are tied to financial costs. These costs can pose as a barrier to those from low socio-economic backgrounds, even with access to scholarship payments.
Due to my upbringing and the idea of masculinity that I was brought up with, I struggle to ask for help. I have been a young carer for my dad since I was in year 9 and have gotten used to supporting myself on my own. Student programs like FYE have supported me through connectivity, and I can now go to people to ask questions. I initially joined FYE as a social endeavour but it has transitioned into more than that. I have been able to build professional connections, gain Jules as a reference on my CV and obtain valuable experience working in an ambassador role. Hearing positive words and appreciation from those around me has also motivated me during times when I have really needed it.
To other students who may also struggle to reach out for support, I want to say that the barriers we face when seeking help reflect a society that we want to move past. Even the smallest acts can help break down these barriers, such as calling a GP to sort out a mental health plan or booking an appointment with a psychologist. Knock down mental health stigma and start an active conversation with your friends. Seek help because everyone deserves it and listen to the advice you’re given.
Next year, I would like to become an FYE mentor and join ANU+. I am also currently the President of the Dining Society, which provides provide subsidised meals to ANU students, and would like to continue my work with the club. I am looking to expand my degree to a double degree in arts, majoring in politics and minoring in philosophy and history. Soon, I will be moving off campus as well! Other than that, I would like to continue taking opportunities, gaining new experiences and meeting new people during my time at the ANU.

University is all a bit new to me and I am still adapting. Coming from a single-parent household, it has always been my mum and I, so it felt strange to move away on my own. I am glad that I chose to reach out to ANU programs and services. They have supported me throughout my time at university and given me the opportunity to take part in experiences which I wouldn’t have otherwise. My name is Caitlin and I am from Campbelltown. I have just finished my first year of university and am studying a double degree in international relations and international security studies.
There was a lot of uncertainty around the time when I was preparing for university. Graduating from high school during the pandemic was confusing, as I wasn’t sure what was happening with university admissions. I came across ANU’s scheme for early entry on Facebook. I was interested in early entry, as I thought it would help with the stress of completing my HSC. I looked at some of ANU’s degrees which I found interesting, and after completing more research, decided it was the place I wanted to study.
I am the first in my family to move for university, so I wasn’t sure of what to expect. While adjusting to university life, my mum was my biggest source of support and encouragement. She did her best to visit me as often as she could and helped keep me on track. If it wasn’t for her, I would have struggled a lot more. As an introverted and reserved person, it can be difficult for me to make friends, so I was very lucky to have also found a friendship group in one of my classes. This made me feel less alone during my first semester.
The First-Year Experience (FYE) and Set4ANU programs were also a huge source of support for me. Through these programs, I was given information about the ANU services which I needed, so I knew exactly where to go for extra help. I joined FYE after receiving an email from the program at the beginning of the year and decided to attend one of their events. It was scary to go and I was anxious about meeting new people, however, the students and staff who I met were very nice and approachable. The staff ensured that students were getting the interactions they needed. Even after the program ended for Semester 1, they still supported me and made sure I was getting the right university experience. FYE has assisted me in balancing both my studies and social life at ANU.
After my exams for the first semester were finished, I went back home to see my family, however, it was during this time that the COVID-19 outbreak in Sydney began. I was not able to return to Canberra and was the only person in my friendship group who was not on campus. During this time, I was struggling and felt excluded. It felt as though the community which I had gained at ANU was lost and I was worried I would have to start again. However, Jules from FYE held a survey and was in contact with me over a few weeks to make sure I was doing okay. She signed me up as a mentee for Set4ANU and I attended a few events. Like FYE, the Set4ANU staff and students were really kind. It was nice to have a mentor, not just to guide me, but also because they had the same interests as me. We could have casual conversations without the pressure of having to hit checkpoints or follow a criteria when talking to one another. It was an opportunity for me to talk to people who I hadn’t spoken to before.
One of my favourite events from these programs included a bus tour around Canberra, during which I was able to see the city’s landscapes and see all of the places which I didn’t get to visit. I also enjoyed FYE's panel discussion, which gave students the chance to ask mentors any questions they may have.
I have applied to be an FYE mentor for next year. I am not very extroverted, and I know that there are students like me who might be more comfortable with someone who isn’t very loud. I want to help students and make them feel supported at university. I also can’t wait to travel again and would like to go overseas.
My advice for other students who may be struggling is to reach out. Depending on your problem or struggle, there are services for you at ANU, so that you are not struggling or alone. The only thing these services can do is help, so don’t hesitate to utilise them. You are not supposed to do it by yourself if you don’t think you can.

Set4ANU is a fun, free program designed to prepare students to excel at The Australian National University through holistic support during the first semester orientation and transition period. This encompasses both O-Week events and the semester-long Set4ANU Mentoring program.
Registration for new students to have a Set4ANU Mentor in Semester 2 is open. Sign up here: https://anu.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3ggi2gXpwILenxb
We welcome students who will be studying on campus and those who may be studying remotely - our mentors are students too, and are currently studying from all over the world!
