👋Starting a new text type? Start here! The register makes every text unique. it's what makes a picturebook different from a film. So, it makes sense to unpack the three elements of the register of a text every time we teach our students about a new text-type. Every text, every year group, everytime. 👍Follow me for more about the register, field, tenor and mode. . . . #aussieteachers #iteach #iteachwriting #australiancurriculum #iteachgrammar
Day 3 wrap up. A short one because I didn't get to stay for long before I had to literally "take off". Thanks so much for all the organisers of the AATE ALEA National Conference ALEA - Australian Literacy Educators' Association for creating a great confrence and to Australian Literacy Educators' Association ALEA ACT Local Council for making it possible for me to be there. I loved meeting so many inspiring leaders and educators this year and I'm sad I didn't get more selfies with all my new besties! Bring on Hobart in 2025! 🎉
Day 2 of the @aatealeaconf in Adelaide! I was so lucky to be in many inspiring sessions. I couldn't take enough notes. I felt honoured to be able to run a workshop with some amazing literacy educators and then dance the night away at the conference dinner 💃
Day 1 of the AATE / ALEA 2024 National Conference was jam packed and amazing! Looking forward to tomorrow!

Bowerbird Blues by @auraparker and @scholastic is a beautiful book about collections and connections 💙 If you have read Bowerbird Blues already you know that using it to teach Relational Processes (words that relate two parts of the clause) couldn't be anymore perfect 👌 #nss2024 #bowerbirdblues #scholastic #nss #kidlit #aussieteacher #teacherresources #grammarlesson #lessonplans #picturebooklessons

📣Good grammar teachers need good books! 📣 Here is your excuse to TREAT YO SELF and buy some picture books. Grammar goggles? Or morpheme microscopes? Whatever we call it, the fact remains, that as teachers of English we need to help our students discover the different levels of a text. Understanding a text at every level means investigating sentences, clauses, phrases, words and morphemes. Each of these parts of a text is unique to the purpose of the text. So how do we investigate them and teach them to our students? . Follow along and I will show you! . . . . #teachingtips #grammarteacher #functionalgrammar #onlinelearning #iteachtoo #australianteacher

In this beautiful book by @artofbrentos graduation is used to represent time passing. 👩🏫 This visual grammar lesson is suitable for students from F-6 as they explore the grammar of images that develop a message. . . . . . #iteach #iteachenglish #visualgrammar #kidlit #australianpicturebooks #australianauthor #australianteacher #lessonplans #grammarlesson #speedygrammar #libbybakerliteracy #aussieteacher

A Start of School Speedy Grammar Lesson! 🏃🏫 Starting School by @janiegodwin and @_annawalker_ perfectly shares the varied experiences of starting school AND it works so well for an investigation into the different "happenings" (processes/verb groups). Lesson Idea💡 1. Ask students the probe question "what is happening?" as you read each sentence. 2. Colour the happening/process green. 3. Explain that their are many ways of things "happening" and in this way we can move away from verbs being described only as "doing words". BONUS! You are halfway to identifying clauses/sentences with your class! . . . #teachersfollowteachers #grammarteacher #teachgrammar #iteachtoo #primaryteacher #australianteachers #teacher #teachersofinstagram #literacyteacher #iteachwriting #teachersdownunder #teacherlibrarian #picturebook #teacherblog #teacherblogger #startingschool #1stdayback #beginningteacher #kidlit

What was your primary school grammar experience? I was at the very end of the process of writing generation, just as functional grammar was peaking into classrooms, despite this, I remember only a handful of grammar lessons as a primary school student and they were all very rules-based and traditional. It wasn't common to consider grammar during normal classwork. I know every school is different (maybe more so in the 90s than now?) and my primary school curriculum was a world away from primary schools across the border in NSW. My primary school experience is partly the reason why I have found functional grammar so transformative. Functional grammar demonstrates that grammar is not a standalone subject. It happens during writing, reading and even spelling, it is woven into the fabric of literacy. ⭐What grammar teaching do you remember from your time in primary school? Feel like you need to up skill yourself in functional grammar? Check out my online courses! https://libbybakerliteracy.com/online-learning/ The information for this reel comes from Beyond the Grammar Wars: A Resource for Teachers and Students on Developing Language Knowledge in the English/literacy Classroom by Terry Locke For more on the history of writing/grammar in Australia see the article I have placed in my linktree https://linktr.ee/libbybakerliteracy
