Farewell Simon! Congratulations on completing your 12-month Clinical Fellowship at Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute. We've thoroughly enjoyed having you on the team. We wish you all the best back home in Belgium!
Did You Know?
Up to 70% of people experiencing a knee injury develop osteoarthritis within the following 10-15 years.
Early intervention and proper care are crucial in managing knee health and preventing long-term complications.
Strengthening the muscles around your knee can help support and stabilise the joint, reducing the risk of osteoarthritis.

Recently, Dr David Parker & Dr Brett Fritsch attended the ACL Study Group meeting in Niseko, Japan and presented papers outlining their recent research on ACL reconstruction. In addition, they participated in discussions around establishing a global ACL registry, a project supported by ISAKOS which is looking to combine data from all of the existing National ACL registries.
This initiative aims to create a centralised database collecting standardised data on ACL injuries and treatments. Such a registry, if established, could contribute to a deeper understanding of these injuries globally, including:
- Prevalence and risk factors: This could inform prevention strategies.
- Treatment effectiveness: Comparing different approaches could guide future best practices.
- Patient outcomes: Insights could lead to improved care and recovery.
The potential impact of such a registry is significant, but it's important to note that it is at an early stage of discussion. Stay tuned for further updates as this important initiative progresses.

Our team recently attended the Australian Knee Society (AKS) Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) 2023 in Melbourne. It was an informative few days packed with cutting-edge research, engaging discussions, and insightful case presentations centered on knee surgery.
SORI and The Knee Institute actively engaged with fellow experts in the field and presented recent research on various aspects of ACL reconstruction, high tibial osteotomy (HTO), total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and biomechanics.
A big thank you to the organisers and sponsors who helped develop such a valuable platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing.
We were honored to host visiting orthopaedic surgeons from Korea, Dr. Seung-Joon Rhee and Dr. Min Jung for their time in Sydney as part of the collaborative initiative between the Australian Knee Society and the Korean Arthroscopy Society.
A scientific symposium, proudly sponsored by Arthrex APAC, was held at Landmark Orthopaedics, featuring a series of insightful presentations covering topics such as; alignment strategies in TKA, patient specific TKA, distal femoral fractures and repair techniques for meniscal tears. Attendees also gained valuable insights from Marek Scibor-Kaminski about Arthrex's innovative medical devices and market trends in ANZ.
Great to see Dr. David Parker, representing ISAKOS at the meeting in Chongqing, China.
During his visit, Dr. Parker was privileged to meet Xia Boyu, who as a double amputee at 69yo summited Everest. A true testament to the power of the human spirit!
We had a great time hosting Ramsay Health Care October GP education session 'All about knees' at Landmark Orthopaedics. We would like to thank our presenters, Dr Myles Coolican, Dr David Parker and Dr Jobe Shatrov, and Chloe Donovan and Geoff Loomes from Jointli, for their informative and engaging workshops.
Our attendees enjoyed rotating through 5 workshops that focused on evidence-based treatments and diagnosis for knee arthritis, including exercise management, knee injections, and total knee replacement surgery.
We are committed to providing GPs with the latest information and best practices in orthopaedic care, so that they can provide their patients with the best possible outcomes. Stay tuned for more educational events in the future!
Thank you to Surgical Specialties for sponsoring the evening.
A fantastic program was organised by Al Getgood, Elizabeth Arendt, and Rob LaPrade at the ISAKOS / American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Osteotomy course at OLC in Chicago. The course, which attracted 50 registrants from 17 countries, featured informative lectures, engaging case discussions, and hands-on cadaver workshops from a renowned international faculty.
Dr David Parker, ISAKOS President, recently visited the ISAKOS - International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine & Aspetar Knee and Ankle Surgical Skills Workshop in Doha, Qatar.
Dr Parker co-chaired the workshop, which provided invaluable hands-on training to 30 registrants from 17 different countries. He also participated in the FIFA ICRS Consensus group for the treatment of cartilage injuries in footballers and is a member of Aspetar's Scientific Advisory Board.
SORI is honored to contribute to this endeavor and remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing excellence in orthopaedic surgery and sharing its knowledge and expertise with the global community.
Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute (SORI) is committed to finding new and better ways to treat ACL injuries.
Not every ACL injury requires surgery, and non-surgical methods may be suitable for certain patients. Therefore, we are conducting a study to explore non-surgical treatment options at our facility at Landmark Orthopaedics.
This study will involve clinical assessments, state of the art athletic performance testing at Jointli, robotic knee laxity testing and MRI analysis. This information will help us to better understand the effectiveness of non-surgical treatments and to better understand which patients can be managed successfully without surgery.
This study is part of SORI’s ongoing commitment to research that improves the lives of patients with knee injuries.
Most medical imaging in orthopaedics measures patients standing upright and may not fully evaluate the outcomes of patients in their activities of daily living. 3D motion capture and computational modeling allow us to examine in-vivo joint loads while patients undertake their daily activities.
At the Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute, Yoong Lim, PhD, collects patients' biomechanical data and computes joint function. We have significant interest and experience in examining patients' data on various knee surgeries. These data are used to evaluate clinical outcomes and inform surgery decisions.
Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute (SORI) hosts a variety of fellows throughout the year, including clinical fellows, research fellows, observers, and international travelling fellows. This opportunity allows them to gain exposure to the different surgical techniques employed by consulting surgeons at The Knee Institute, and to take the skills they learn back to their home countries.
In addition to clinical training, the fellows actively participate in regular clinical and scientific meetings, present at international conferences, and conduct their research at our state-of-the-art facility here at Landmark Orthopaedics. This unique experience not only creates lifelong friendships, but it also connects fellows to a global network of orthopaedic surgeons.
We extend our heartfelt farewell to Jennifer Bott, who served as a valued board member of the Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute from July 2014 to July 2023. Her leadership, expertise and dedication have made a lasting impact on our organisation. We thank her sincerely and wish her the best in her future endeavors.
New publication in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
Tibial Tubercle Osteotomy in Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty for Periprosthetic Infection.
The study found that Tibial tubercle osteotomy (TTO) is a safe and effective exposure during revision total knee arthroplasty (RTKA) for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). It also found that TTO did not compromise functional outcomes and had a low rate of complications related to the procedure.
This is an important finding, as TTO can be a valuable tool for surgeons who are performing RTKA for PJI, a technically challenging procedure.
The study was led by: Nicolas CANCE, MD, Cécile Batailler, MD, PhD, Jobe Shatrov, MBBS, FRACS, Robin Canetti, MD, Elvire Servien, MD, PhD & Sebastien Lustig, MD, PhD
