Anna Fowke Counselling
Person-centred, warm, and supportive mental health care for children, adolescents, and adults.
The week begins on a Tuesday for me, and I am up and at it at 7.30 am. Looking forward to a full day of supervising students and seeing clients today. Have a wonderful day.
Practice update - From 1st of September I will be offering Wednesday afternoon and evening appointments. This means I have increased my capacity to see some new clients and I look forward to meeting you :) Remember that I will see human beings aged 5 and above and I also work with families and couples. My practice is strengths based and aims to create a place of acceptance and growth based on YOUR needs, not on societal beliefs or pressures. Book online at
When you see a counsellor there is a shared responsibility. The counsellor has skills and knowledge but you bring your openness and willingness to explore and move towards better times.
It is a collaboration, and one which requires respect and humility from each person. Really a very delicate balance, so when you find that balance, embrace it.
If you have a young person needing some support, I have a spot on Tuesdays at 3.30pm and another fortnightly spot on Thursdays at 3.45pm. These spots tend to be snapped up, so please do let me know if you would like to meet me and see if your little one or teenager might feel comfortable chatting with me soon.

Today my work involves seeing clients in Hong Kong, on the Gold Coast, in NSW online, and in Brisbane in person. Technology allows us so much but also requires careful consideration in how we use it. We still need to keep growing our connection skills and our community.
Moments in my day -
Things people say -
"I have never felt I can talk about this"
"I thought I was the only one"
"I feel safe in here"
If I can help people feel this way then my purpose is met.

Mondays are my day off, I have at times been tempted to squeeze in sessions to suit others but I've come to realise how important my down time is to the quality of my work and my wellbeing. Do you look after your down time too?
It is important as you seek mental health support to verify that the person you are seeking help from has received appropriate training and works under an ethical code of practice. There are many ways to do this, including checking the AHPRA register for psychologists, the ARCAP register for counsellors and psychotherapists and the AASW for social workers. In this way, you can be assured that your practitioners are suitable and qualified and that your or your family's mental health and well-being are in safe hands.
If you have young people in your life, you may be settling into school holidays; this is a time to have some of those really good chats and make sure your young person has spaces for chats they may not be comfortable talking to Mum or Dad about. I want to normalise this; it is no reflection on our parenting if our kids need other places to find different perspectives and support. Let me know if I can support your family in any way. Stay warm :)

In conversation with a parent recently I realised that I do not toot my own horn about having ways of working particularly well with children, adolescents and adults who are neurodiverse. So I thought it might be worth shouting out to anyone listening that I love working with everyone and to me, neurodiversity just requires me to be extra good at my job of listening and noticing how things affect my clients and working with them. Oh, and continuing my study constantly to be learning best practice and new research and knowledge.....And as they say....that's my jam πππΌπ»
After 9 hours on Zoom yesterday it is such a pleasure and privilege to fit in some time by the water before the days face to face sessions π
It's been a day of peer support, professional development, a PACFA group, and much more. I love those days when I get to keep learning, and while I am developing my skills, my clients are at the forefront of my mind.
So many colds and flu's around. A few empty spots free this week as people are unwell. Give me a call if you think some counselling might help you or your loved ones.
As a new week begins, I am grateful for the work I do with each client who chooses to see me. I am reorganising after-hours sessions slightly and may currently open another evening as demand for them is high. If you are looking for individual or couples therapy and feel I might be a good fit for you, please get in touch so I can find a suitable time to suit your schedule.

Hello, I hope you are enjoying a restful day today, whatever meaning it holds for you. Please try and nurture yourself and honour your role as your own best friend and nurturer.
As we approach this weekend some of you may be feeling sad. Mother's Day, can be hard for people who have lost their mother, or whose mother was not a loving figure, or its just difficult territory...
Maybe you are a mother who is bereaved or someone who wants to be a mother but cannot. Maybe you are a sole parent struggling to be both mother and father....the different ways this day impacts us are complex and individual. I am sending love your way and letting you know you are not alone.

Some Sunday cuteness....
Earlier this week someone very special came to talk...
I have current capacity for several new clients as some clients have reached a good place after some sessions and consequently, their regular spots are up for grabs. Please feel free to contact me or book a session on the website to come and discuss your needs.
I look forward to meeting you.
Individuals from 5 and over (my oldest client currently is 82, and my youngest is 6). I also offer couples therapy and I like to approach work with teens and children from a family systems approach.

Whatever is going on for you right now, whether it's painful, or its great or its dull or whatever it may be, it is what it is and you deserve space to feel your emotions. You deserve kindness and support. That starts with you....right now.
Parents I have noticed raised anxiety in our littlies around public places and knives and I think it's worth raising this as media coverage of the funerals of the people who lost their lives in Bondi continues. Our little people listen to it all even when we might feel they are not listening. Just keep an eye out for raised anxiety or bad dreams and get some support if you notice something changes.
Always here to support you, Anna

So many of us have been affected by recent events, bringing up memories or just rattling our belief in how things are. If you are feeling some jangled or troubled thoughts and emotions talking about it helps. Be kind with yourself and others ππ»

Recently in a couple's session a client gave me some feedback after the second session. He said "you know I really didn't know what this would be like and I have a bit of a thing against psychology....(we all laughed) he continued...but this has been far more than I expected, just the way you put things has made me understand what's going on in a way I never would have got to on my own". His partner then explained that she also felt like she was understanding things more than she has in her years of therapy with psychologists. Now this isn't to knock psychology or praise me! This is much more about the process of working alongside people narratively to find ways to look at things differently and gain insights into each others emotional experiences in the relationship using Narrative couples therapy and emotionally focused therapy.

I am a registered counsellor with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia. Counselling is a self-regulated profession, and this means it is on us to make sure we belong to a regulatory body and abide by ethical practice or risk being de-registered by our regulatory body.
When you choose a counsellor, make sure they are part of the ARCAP register (Australian Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists). This will help ensure your mental health is being taken care of by a suitably trained and skilled person who abides by a code of ethics. I for example, am a member of two bodies, PACFA and ACA, and I undertake regular clinical supervision as mandated by PACFA and ACA. I also undertake continuous professional development and take my work very seriously. If I work with you, your care is my absolute priority.

Hello there, I seem to go through Facebook hibernation every so often....see image :)
So here I am, out of hibernation and posting. I hope you are all well and enjoyed the slight lull in activity that the long weekend brought. Also, school holidays seem to affect lots of us, even if it's only the change in traffic in the mornings. Things are busy for me, but I have space for new clients, so please get in touch if I can be of service.
