Keeping it in the family!!! Leanne Gillett trained Mitigate and Duvet during their racing careers and now Duvet is ridden by Dakota Gillett and Mitigate is ridden by Ayla Stevens. These photos were taken yesterday at Hillbillies Equestrian Centre Alice Springs by Nikki Westover Photography!!

Mitigate is an 8 year old gelding by Medaglia D’Oro out of Segolene, he had 5 wins from 48 starts and won $69,800 in prize money!

Duvet is an 8 year old gelding by Bernadini out of Counterpane. He had 8 wins from 56 starts and won $134,705 in prize money.

Fun fact: both horses share the same grandsire, the famous Lonhro!

Both horses look absolutely stunning, so great to see them in their lives after racing!

The first dressage comp for the year was hosted by Darwin Dressage Club and held today at Fred’s Pass! There were two OTTTB’s strutting their stuff on the sand, Taylor Quill’s Tindara Kayno and Teresa Hall’s Dancing Boy! They both put their best hooves forward and did their breed proud!

Equestrian Northern Territory need our support to ensure that the NT can be recognised as a member of the national body. This is essential to ensure we are able to have our voices heard when it comes to all things equestrian in the NT. I urge everyone to support this petition if you are an EA member - you don’t even have to be based in the NT!

They say birds of a feather flock together .... well that’s certainly true for the Off the Track NT horses at Fannie Bay Equestrian Club! Gary went on a ride out around East Point with Cobber and Dancing Boy .... he put them both to shame and was the bravest and best behaved of the lot.

Tonight was more work in the arena with Specker Blue (jimmy) and his owner Ruby Burling. Emma and Ruby both work for Phil and Rhonda Cole and enjoying riding together outside of work as well! Just more evidence that the right Off the Track horse can be suitable for capable teen riders!

Special Feature!!!!

Off the Track NT is going to follow the progress of very special team! Emma Lines has been working at Phil Cole Racing Stables-Darwin and has formed a strong bond with Good to be Great an 8yo bay by Exceedingly Good out of Mused. Gary as he is affectionately known around the stables has recently retired and Emma is just the person to help him make his transition from track to hack.

Gary was bought by Phil and Rhonda Cole from the online tried horse sales in QLD. He spending 12 months in the paddock prior to the sales and he arrived in the NT a little worse for wear. A little underdone and a mane that needed a good brush, he needed a little tlc to bring out his best.

A spritely Gary arrived at FBEC on Thursday afternoon and has plenty to look at with about 30 other horses and lovely ocean views. We can’t wait to report on the first few rides!

Congratulations Emma Lines on your very first Off the Track thoroughbred! It’s going to be a wild ride!

For those you competing in equestrian sports in the NT, ENT have announced their AGM date!

Off the Track NT’s feature hack to track is Star Groom! Trained by Mark Mair he had 41 starts for 9 wins and 9 placings with winnings of $110,450. Star is 20 years young, by SUCCESS EXPRESS (USA) from PLATONIC.

Star now lives in Darwin with his owner Kate Kilgallon from JK Equestrian. Kate says that this beautiful boy found me 3 years ago, he gave so much confidence back in the saddle, we competed up to elementary dressage an some low level jumping, he always looks after his rider, a true gentleman, now semi retired and used as a pleasure horse for beginners to intermediate riders in lessons and out down the beach on trail rides.

Stabled at Fannie bay club, he takes part in pony rides on open days for children and enjoys the carrot snacks he receives in return!

Star is also available for sale or lease if anyone is looking for a school master with a lovely temperament. He would make a love dressage horse or stunning hack, but his jumping days are probably behind him! Message the page or contact Kate.

Our Track to hack feature horse today is Six Straight, out of champion NT sprinter Dream Face by Real Saga. Trained by Jarrod McLean Racing. Unfortunately his name prediction of winning six straight didn’t come true and he only trialled once!

George is also based in Darwin with his owner Pat Delaney. Apparently a bit of handful when he was at the track, Pat says George is the quietest 4 year old you’ll find! He’s only little at 15.1 but he’s got a big heart and a great little jump. His easy going nature makes him such a pleasure to own.

George loves a cuddle and scratch and swimming at the beach with the other horses. He’s competed at dressage scoring over 60% in his first test. George’s old connections also get to stay in touch when he visits Adelaide for a break during the steamy months!

We’re looking forward to seeing updates from Pat and George as they enjoy life off the track.

If you own an off the track thoroughbred, chances are you’ve heard of gastric ulcers. Tell tale signs are often, loss of appetite, becoming girthy, irritability when riding or an unwillingness to go forward.

Today’s featured Off The Track NT thoroughbred is Alby, owned by Alexx Mudd. Raced as “I Am Magic” he is a 13 year old Gelding by “Magic Albert” out of Miss Schumann. He was trained by Kerry Petrick.

Last raced in Darwin, July 2014, 57 starts.
57: 13-11-9 earned over 300K in prize money.

Alexx and Alby are also based in Darwin and she has owned him since Sept 2015. Alex says ‘he started off quite a handful and anxious but after doing a lot of work together and really bonding over the years he has become my everything. He has taught me a lot and we have grown together. He’s a smoocher, who loves to hang out in the paddock or go for a ba****ck stroll around the block, he knows my voice and is always waiting for me when I get home’

Alby has had multiple wins in the Dressage Arena, and been on the ENT Dressage Squad. He won 2019 Gold performance in Prelim and in 2020 has competed at Novice with multiple wins both local and in online comps with a top score of 67.5%. He placed 3rd in Novice at the Darwin Dressage Club Championships and has been training to move to Elementary Level.

At the 2020 NTSHA HOTY Alexx rode Alby to achieve Reserve Champion Rider of the Year 21-30 years and He won the NTSHA Champion Saddle Horse of the Year over 16hh, to be Grand National Qualified for 2021

Alexx describes Alby as her biggest challenge but my biggest accomplishment, we think most owners feel that way about their off the track thoroughbreds! We are excited to see how Alby and Alexx continue to develop with the years ahead. Best of luck Alexx.

Our first featured Off The Track NT thoroughbred is Cobber, owned by Chloe Rose Baxter. Cobber is an 8 year old gelding by Artie Schiller out of Star of Ella. He trained with Ryan Balfour Racing, his last trial was at Morphettville on 23/8/18. All up he had 27 starts for 3 wins, 2 seconds and 5 thirds with a total of $78,830.

Cobber now lives in sunny Darwin with his owner Chloe. Besides being the most playful horse in the paddock and enjoying swims at the beach, Cobber and Chloe have been successful in the dressage arena as well as bringing home ribbons from the local shows. Cobber clearly knows how to clear a fence as well so who knows what his future holds.
