A newly upgraded 3 kilometre section of a vital road connection between Darwin, Jabiru and Kakadu National Park has opened to traffic.

The $31.66 million package of works sees the delivery of the second stage of the Adelaide River Flood Plain Arnhem Highway Upgrades, which includes a new 4-span bridge at the Beatrice Hill Causeway.

The upgrades will reduce flood impacts and improve safety and access on the Arnhem Highway. The new 3 kilometre section of road opened to traffic on 18 May 2023.

The upgrades will see many benefits including:
- reducing wet season flood effects and frequency and duration of road closures/restrictions
- improving road safety and access for residents in the Jabiru and West Arnhem regions
- improving access to supply quarry materials to the Darwin construction industry
- improving the reliability for primary producers to use the route to bring products to the port and local markets
- improving the reliability of the route to transport tourists
- improving the reliability for Defence to access training areas at Mt Bundy
- supporting current and future demand on the route from local industry, cattle and tourism industries.

The project has created 164 jobs, including 36 for Indigenous workers and subcontractors.

A total of 98 subcontractors and suppliers in the Darwin region supported the project, including 4 Indigenous business enterprises.

Local contractor Allan King & Sons Group will continue to remove sections of the old Arnhem Highway with minor remaining works to continue on site until approximately July.

Allan had to give up a couple of prize possessions - this weeks competition- who can correctly state the year Allan bought the horse drawn Armstrong Holland grader and scraper (it may have been brand new, direct from the manufacturer…)? 😁😂

Hard work pays off! This year we won the CCF project value $30M to $75M award for stage 1 of the Adelaide river floodplain upgrade, completed at the end of 2021. This project required our quarry crew to operate 24 hours a day manufacturing drainage rock, and at peak of the bulk earthworks up to 5000 cubic metres of fill placed per shift- Fantastic effort from all involved!

Sealing the Roper Highway to increase road safety and improve flood immunity remains a priority of the Territory Labor Government. It’s great to announce that local company Allan King & Sons Group has been awarded a $25 million tender to seal and upgrade almost 20km of the Highway between Wilton Bridge and the Ngukurr Community. 🛣

These upgrades will also improve access for nearby communities and reduce closure times, enhancing connectivity and resilience for residents, freight and tourism operators. ✅

Another successful completion, Saddle Rail is the third significant package we have completed on the Port Keats road and also includes the third bridge we have constructed in the area!

The Territory Labor Government has awarded a contract to upgrade 11.8 kilometres of the Point Stuart Access Road.

Local business Allan King & Sons Group will be delivering the $5.1 million contract, which will support nearly 30 jobs throughout construction.

These upgrades will provide the recreational fishing community increased access to popular nearby creeks and reefs in the Chambers and Finke Bays, which in turn alleviates demand on the Shady Camp boat ramp.
