Let’s get a thread for positivity and inspiration! Would love any math teachers to comment and share in a couple sentences an they’ve completed in the last year they’re super proud of. It may have been really engaging, authentic, promoted positive mathematical discussion or productive struggle (you don’t need to have made the lesson up!). To start, I'll share mine! The reason students do not value showing their working is because there is a an absence of an authentic audience member (one other than the teacher grading). Providing problems that are contentious and collaborative shifts the view that doing maths is providing answer after answer to question after question, to a view that maths is producing texts of reason, intended for validation/ scrutiny from an audience. For anyone that has problems with my working out on the whiteboard, you’ve proved my point ;) .pentagon

What is Less Yak, More Math?
Less Yak More Math is on a mission to give teachers tools who wish to transform their classroom in powerful ways. "Less Yak" teachers have come to the realisation that:
There is negative relationship between start of lesson teacher talk and student engagement in their task (Building Thinking Classrooms, Peter Liljedahl, 2020).
Students engage more when they are presented problems before they are given methods (Mathematical Mindsets, Jo Boaler, 2015).
In order to create resilient problem solvers, teachers need to be less helpful (Dan Meyer).

Students need to develop metacognition through making connections between their thinking and other students thinking.
Lessons should be geared towards conceptual understanding.
