Sir Frederick Samson served Fremantle as Mayor from 1951 until 1972. He was a keen filmmaker and his own personal collection of films were regularly screened to guests at his house. They were later donated to the State Library and featured in the 2021 Fremantle Heritage Festival. Short historic films such as these capturing the annual Fremantle Blessing of the Fleet are rare and thanks to Freddie's collection remain preserved forever. Fremantle Blessing of the Fleet

Making “Stickies” with the Vinci Family
The Vinci Family Making Pots - Gordon, Peter, Frank, Phil Vinci and Deckie’s Video courtesy of Brett Vinci

Very rare footage shot in 1967 off Fremantle by Malcolm Wallhead. Special thanks to the Wallhead Family for allowing this video to be shared, and to the late Malcolm Wallhead for immortalising these images and capturing them with such poetic words. They are precious memories for many of us. The Film was shot onboard the fishing vessel “Dante” and contained members of the Iannello family onboard including Francesco and Cono Iannello. The Film also contains some footage of the “Tonnarella” with the La Macchia family onboard (including Gaetano and Carmelo La Macchia, and Gaetano Zagami. The footage also captures the unloading at the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour. Merry Christmas from the WA Rock Lobster Fishers' Federation! May these memories be shared today around the table, and may we never forget from where we came.

Malcolm Douglas filmed Tony Spinella in 1980 catching and filleting Barramundi in the NT. Tony pioneered the Barramundi industry in the 1950’s. He is a man that has done and seen it all, and the last of a dying breed of true fishermen - the last great hunters on this planet. An uncanny ability to adapt, learn, improvise and thrive. He survived a world war, poverty, migration and the challenges many migrants faced in a foreign place, remoteness, a cyclone, and his own personal challenges. Legendary!

Lancelin Back In The Day 1953
Possibly the earliest footage of Fishing from Lancelin from true Pioneers of the area. This colour film was shot in 1953 by Bert Teske and produced by the late Max Gazeley. It features fishing and early processing of Crayfish in Lancelin. It includes words written by Max Gazeley and Alan Collins. A special thank you to Lancelin - Back In The Day for publishing these types of videos so that we can all enjoy them for many many more generations - and remember the pioneers regional towns and the Fishing Industry

This time of year was always time to make pots..
