#16DaysinWA at the WA Shipwrecks Museum

The annual #16DaysInWA – Stop Violence Against Women campaign takes place each year from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) through to 10 December (Human Rights Day) - and this year’s theme is Stopping Family and Domestic Violence: Play your part.

The WA Shipwrecks Museum is spreading its message of solidarity with a giant orange cross painted on its front lawn. Orange is the recognised campaign colour, and the cross is symbolic of saying “no” to domestic violence.

We invite you here to visit the Shipwrecks Museum during the campaign and fill in your own message of solidarity for placement on the anchor (a symbol of hope) outside the Shipwrecks Museum.

The America's Cup replica!
America’s Cup replica - A prestigious prize 🏆 The America's Cup, the world's oldest international sporting competition, holds a legendary history. Back in 1851, the yacht America clinched victory by sailing triumphantly around the Isle of Wight, winning the coveted British Royal Yacht Squadron's 100 Sovereign Cup. Fast forward six years, the Cup was donated to the New York Yacht Club, transforming into a perpetual challenge trophy open to yachts from across the globe. Over the years the America’s Cup has grown taller to accommodate more champions around its base and now stands at an impressive height of 1.1 metres. With an estimated value of US$10 million, it is second in value only to the gold FIFA World Cup in value! This incredible replica of the America's Cup was donated to the WA Maritime Museum, from the collection of WA's very own sailing legend, Rolly Tasker. At our latest exhibition, Australia II: 40 Years On, you have the chance to marvel at this piece of sporting history, on display alongside a model of the first-ever champion, America. 🇺🇸🇦🇺 Don't miss the opportunity to witness this iconic trophy's grandeur up close and personal. Zeewijk Shipwreck | WA Museum
OUR SHIPWRECK STORIES: ZEEWIJK ⚓ In 2021, WA Museum maritime archaeologists joined the team from Shipwreck Hunters Australia with assistance from lobster fishing family the Liddon’s to investigate the two-wreck theory of the Zeewijk wreck site in the Pelsaert Group of the Houtman Abrolhos Islands. Find out more about this work by watching Episode Six of shipwreck hunters Australia, streaming now only on Disney+. During the expedition, the team produced a photogrammetric 3D model of a surviving Zeewijk timber, located inside the lagoon. 3D photogrammetry is the process of recording a physical object to produce a digital 3D model. For maritime archaeologists, this helps with both wreck site documentation and sharing amazing wreck site finds. It requires a lot of overlapping digital media, such as photographs and video, that captures the same part of the object from different angles. The media is then combined and transformed to create the 3D model. In the case of the Zeewijk timber, the team took hundreds of photographs of the timber on the wreck site and then uploaded them into the processing software. The software automatically matches point features in overlapping photographs, to create a ‘point cloud’. From this point cloud, a 3D mesh of lines connecting the points can be generated, upon which the original images are then overlaid to create realistic texture and produce the final 3D model. Wanting to see artefacts recovered from the Zeewijk wreck site and nearby islands? Stop by to visit our WA Shipwrecks Museum or the Museum of Geraldton. Stefano Shipwreck | WA Museum
OUR SHIPWRECK STORIES: STEFANO ⚓ The @WA Museum found the Stefano wreck site in 1997. The site was identified by matching its location and the surviving ship fittings with historical records about the vessel and its journey. Some artefacts were recovered and can be seen on display at the WA Shipwrecks Museum, but none of them conclusively identified the wreck site as Stefano. In 2021, WA Museum archaeologists joined the team from @Shipwreck Hunters Australia to re-visit the Stefano wreck site and search for evidence that would further cement the vessel’s identification. In addition, the Shipwreck Hunters team explored an extraordinary story of survival and the generous assistance provided by First Nations people that ensured two young men from Croatia, made it home back in 1875. Watch Episode Five of Shipwreck Hunters Australia streaming now only on Disney+ to find out if the team was successful in discovering new finds or uncovering new information. Trial Shipwreck | WA Museum
OUR SHIPWRECK STORIES: TRIAL ⛴️ Lost for over 300 years, the location of Australia’s oldest known European shipwreck has been surrounded by misinformation and speculation since it wrecked in 1622, off the northwest coast of modern-day Western Australia. A wreck site located in 1969 was identified as English East India Company ship Trial, but questions have remained about its positive identification, and whether another contemporary vessel may have wrecked in the area. To answer this question, in 2021 WA Museum commissioned an aerial magnetometer survey of the Trial Rocks area. The results were analysed, and 16 magnetic targets were identified for further inspection. WA Museum maritime archaeologists and the team from Shipwreck Hunters Australia travelled to the Montebello Islands, 120kms off the coast west of Onslow and Dampier, to inspect the targets. They used a remote-operated vehicle (ROV) and conducted dives to ground-truth and identify targets. Watch Episode Four of Shipwreck Hunters Australia streaming now only on Disney+ to learn what the team found. Excited about the story of Trial? Visit our WA Shipwrecks Museum to see a conserved iron cannon recovered from the wreck site by the WA Museum in 1985. Broome Flying Boats | WA Museum
OUR SHIPWRECK STORIES: BROOME FLYING BOATS ⚓ On March 3, 1942, Japanese fighter aircraft attacked Broome sinking 15 Allied flying boats moored in Roebuck Bay. Many of the aircraft had Dutch civilian evacuees from Indonesia on board, and it is estimated that about 100 people died in the attack. In 2001 the WA Museum conducted an archaeological excavation on an unidentified PBY-5 Catalina flying boat wreck site in Roebuck Bay. At the time, they recovered artefacts that enabled them to positively identify the wreck site as Y-59, a PBY-5 Catalina operated by the Marine Luchtvaartdienst (MLD, Netherlands Naval Aviation Service). In 2021, WA Museum maritime archaeologists along with aviation archaeologist Silvano Jung and the team from Shipwreck Hunters Australia travelled to Broome to search for five missing further unlocated flying boat wreck sites. Experience the incredibly challenging conditions and what the team found by watching Episode Three of Shipwreck Hunters Australia streaming now only on Disney+. Some of the artefacts recovered from the PBY-5 Catalina Y-59 site can be seen on display by visiting our WA Shipwrecks Museum in Fremantle. Or, you can visit the Reflections gallery at WA Museum Boola Bardip to learn more about the bombing of Broome. HMAS Ovens Restoration | WA Museum
Come behind the scenes with us to see the repair works on HMAS Ovens Submarine 🚢 Since January 2023, our much loved HMAS Ovens has been off-limits to the public, undergoing major makeover and restoration works. We're talking hull surface repairs and a fresh coat of paint, which means stripping off all the old coating products. Marine Contractor Eptec has encapsulated the entire submarine in a scaffolding and membrane structure to allow a safe working environment for contractors and to ensure the containment of all material generated during the works. Enjoy this sneak peek into the works going on, covered by 9 News Perth earlier this week.

Victoria Quay Cranes | WA Museum
Today, we are pleased to confirm that the iconic heritage cranes that grace the western end of the Victoria Quay skyline in Fremantle will be conserved and prepared for future installation at the quay. We have worked closely with The Heritage Council and Fremantle Ports to develop a conservation strategy to see the cranes restored and re-erected to represent each crane type. Of particular note is the 1925 Babcock and Wilcox level luffing crane, the last remaining crane of its type at any Australian port. It is also the last of four built in North Fremantle by the State Implementation and Engineering Works to Babcock & Wilcox’s design. The government of the day was keen to foster local manufacturing. Due to its historical importance, parts of the structure will be carefully disassembled and preserved, awaiting future plans for reinstallation and display. The pair of 1952 Stothert & Pitt cranes will be disassembled, primed, and kept on-site, where components from both cranes will be used to construct a single crane. The three luffing cranes, dating from the early-to-mid 20th century, were decommissioned in the 1990s and have since stood as examples of the port’s early infrastructure and significant pieces of early maritime engineering.
