Hockey Geelong Sharks
Men's & Women’s Vic League 1
u14 and u16 juniors
Hear from one of Sharks currently overseas, Angus Ayerbe, about his life overseas:
If you had told me, when I first started playing hockey, that I would be living in a foreign country, coaching and playing the sport I love as a job, I wouldn’t have believed you. But fortunately for me, I am living just that.
I am currently a coach for Gotemba Nishi High School, where the team recently went to the ‘All Japan Inter-High’ national hockey tournament. Playing a knockout format, GNHS advanced to the round of 16, before going doing 1-1 (2-1) to shootouts, in what was an incredible match, placing Gotemba in the top ranked schools across the country.
After the loss, it made me realise what a special opportunity this has been, and how rewarding such an experience has been for me. Living and experiencing a completely different culture has been incredibly rewarding, and I have adjusted smoothly into life in Japan. While I learnt Japanese all throughout High School, language was still quite a barrier to overcome, however, the universal language of sports eventually broke that down, allowing the players to understand my instructions, and likewise, their feedback to me.
While coaching, I was also fortunate enough to play for Shizuoka Prefecture, representing them in various tournaments across the country, achieving a dream of mine to play what I love internationally, making new friends from the teammates I have played with along the way.
Now, none of this would have been possible, had I never picked up a stick at the age of five. I encourage anybody either starting sport, trying a new sport, or a returning player, to pick up a stick and have a go, as you never know where it could bring you in the future.
