This home gym now has a professional 12mm rubber floor, sealed with flexible water based polyurethane designed to withstand sweat and impact from weights.

One happy customer about to get their game on!

Nothing like a finished floor.

This is a raw engineered European Oak which is particularly clean (free of knots) and looks spectacular under a water based finish.

Homeowners to reinstall old skirtings once they have been sanded and refinished.

I’m really shocked to have to report that someone who is operating in the Peel area under the guise of flooring is scamming people out of their money.

Two customers have reported handing over cash deposits and never being able to contact the guy again.

If this happens to you, please report it to the police.

Household tip!

Often the floor protection that is screwed, nailed or stapled onto your chair leg will come apart and then it is the screw, nail or staple which gouges the floor.

We see this a lot ….

Your best bet is to remove the factory installed protection and get some adhesive felt pads on them instead

This was a DIY job.

I’ll give him A for intent, how much for ex*****on?

Another TWO decks done and dusted, homeowner to oil in a couple weeks.

These century old homes are an absolute gem and whilst the old verandahs were rotten and termite eaten, doing both homes at the same time has really come up a treat.

Really glad to have been a part of the restoration work!

Lovely weather for this bespoke job on two 100 year old homes in Northbridge, can’t wait to reveal the finished pics 👍

After many months working in commercial flooring (which I can't take photos of) and multi residential builds, I'm happy to announce more of a focus on the local region and not so much travelling!

Watch this space ....

A tongue and groove floor should be direct stuck to the subfloor.

When builders cut costs and install it as a floating floor using PVA glue to connect the boards together, this is the result.

This 7mm wide board Dunlop hybrid came up a treat 👍

Photos from Floors by Anton's post 22/09/2023

Yes, you can put hybrid flooring on stairs 😊

This week I revisited an old deck and built a small
Extension to the garage. The original Newtech decking looks like the day I installed it, great stuff

This Spotted Gum was so nice to install and came up an absolute treat. Real timber is still a thing and really looks the part.

Another low sheen hybrid, great result, happy customer 👍

Replacing water damaged bamboo with this stunning oak floor seems worth the drama. Skirting to go in and all done 👍

Loving this new extra matt hybrid from Embelton, the native blackbutt is always a popular choice 👍

A very nice Dunlop hybrid in a blackbutt colour for the new master bedroom extension.

Another little Woodpecker brand hybrid job, this one going over existing tiles. One happy customer 😊

The life of a small business tradie -

Up at 4 to make a site induction at the other end of the freeway for 15 minutes, then when I get to the job other trades are in the way so I have to come back.

Morning tea is a myth that consists of the cold half of a takeaway coffee left over from this mornings drive, lunch is whichever lunchbar is close by whose hot bin isn’t reduced to dry crusty end of day items filled with fat and salt which I’ll eat at the steering wheel between jobs and phone calls.

The 4 years you spent getting your degree and learning your trade is understandably more relatable to you than the 4 years apprenticeship I spent learning mine, which is no less relevant to the task at hand.

The salary you earn has on top of it superannuation, holiday pay, sick pay and insurance, all paid for by your employer.

The money I charge for my day has GST, fuel, vehicle service, tool’s replacement and maintenance, numerous ancillaries that are never billed, accountant fees and advertising taken out of it as well the things your employer provides.

Then I get to take home what’s left and pay my mortgage and life’s other expenses.

The young bloke who I had high hopes of training up quit today, he’s rather live on his dads couch than work for a living, so I’ve had to rearrange my next three weeks work and will pull long days to get it done. My partner doesn’t mind, so she says, we fool ourselves it’ll be temporary this time.

The computer desk you sit at as well as all the electronic devices you use are supplied to you at no cost, whereas every single tool I use has been paid for by my labour.

The specialised tool I need today took me longer to hunt down than the job I need it for will take, and cost more than the job will pay.

By the time I get home I get to pack things away, make calls, file my receipts into the shoebox, send invoices, do quotes, I may find time to wind down before dinner, or bed, or spending time with loved ones. Or I may not ….

This isn’t a complaint. We dont choose this life, it chooses us. Not everyone can do what we do and we love that we get to build, create, learn and contribute. What did I do today? I made someone’s home, their life a little bit better.

It’s an attempt to say that we understand why you don’t understand, but if you’re reading this far, hopefully you’ve learned a little bit about why things cost what they do.

Love finishing a job off ….

The homeowner had some earth works to complete and oiled the deck meanwhile, I returned to install the skirt on one of the most satisfying deck I’ve ever built.

Photos from Floors by Anton's post 06/05/2023

The previous contractors started this deck using recycled Jarrah which is completely unsuitable.

Having to finish what someone else started is never easy, especially when it’s a monster deck with some really technically difficult areas to accomodate, but the results are stunning.

Using a 145mm Merbau can be tricky but when this baby is oiled in a couple weeks or so it’ll look spectacular.

Lots of build going on around it, watch this space 👍

Hybrid flooring is a relatively new product to the market in Australia, with manufacturers quoting WPC and SPC, do you really know what you’re getting?

The original lines were mostly Wood Plastic Composite, like some decking materials, but many have now switched to a Stone Polymer Composite.

Unlike timber products, SPC does not react to moisture and will not expand and contract due to humidity changes like most floating floors will, however they will react to heat from direct sunlight so north facing windows should have good window treatments.

I love hybrids. They are tough, waterproof, and inexpensive. Basically a vinyl plank on a floating floor construction, a hybrid will feel softer underfoot, they’ll shrug off big spills and with matt and textured surfaces they don’t show wear and tear.

Embelton have a range of 5.5mm and 8mm as well, they have always been my go to for quality flooring as I know I can rely on it and I never get call backs from installations I have done.

If you’d like samples or to meet at their showroom in Osborne Park, message me to make a time 👍

11/04/2023

There’s a lot of misinformation out there and products like this don’t help.

As a timber deck requires 30cm of clearance underneath for ventilation to avoid sustained moisture damage, and most composites require 20cm, having a clearance of less than 15cm will void the manufacturer warranty of your decking.

Any movements in the pavers or concrete you are decking over will also translate into movement in your deck, for the best results a good strong foundation should be used, not simply going over the top of something you’ve already decided no longer works.

I’ve personally built 20 decks over the years and every single one of them is still there, never had an issue or call back for even a loose board.

Do it right 👍

10/04/2023

Hi folks!

I hope you all had a safe and fun Easter break, I’m back from my own mini holiday and will endeavour to reply to everyone’s messages tonight 👍

04/04/2023

I get asked a lot about going over existing concrete or pavers. Let me explain why that’s a no.

Firstly, when your concrete or pavers move due to water, ants or tree roots, your deck will also move accordingly.

Secondly, a timber deck requires a minimum of 300mm under the decking to the soil for ventilation. Composites are a minimum of 200mm. Going directly to a pre-existing paved surface allows for 35-45mm which means I could not warranty such a build without carrying the liability personally.

And finally, when the water pools under the deck, the battens will be sitting in the water, and even though they are treated pine, eventually they will fail.

If your deck isn’t raised a little, be prepared for some earthworks 👍

22/03/2023

I’d rather overbuild it than underbuild it

When I build a deck I use galvanised steel for the subframe so you never have to worry about the structure warping or rotting.

I also only use screws as decking nails can work their way loose over time, and rather than eyeball along a chalk line, I use a template to ensure every visible screw matches on every board.

There’s a lot of drilling, pre drilling and countersinking, but the finished look is something you’re going to see for a long time to come, it has to be right 👍

Another stunning Spotted Gum floor!

This product is in an apartment that required acoustic matting and green rated adhesives.

This prefinished wire brushed board is a very hard timber with a very forgiving coating and an easy to install locking mechanism from Embelton Flooring 👍

20/03/2023

When thinking about your floor coating system there are more choices today than ever before.

Generally in order of hardness it goes as follows -

Polyurethane
Water based
Hardwax oil
Oil

All of the above come in a single pack or a 2 pack, naturally the 2 pack are more durable.

For ease of repairing your floor coating should it get damaged or scratched, reverse the above order.

15/03/2023

What do you think is the biggest killer of timber floors?

I bet you think it’s water …. But it’s the Australian sun!

Homes that are vacant and left locked up create ideal conditions for a flooring failure, and windows to the floor without tinting or curtains even moreso.

If you’ve spend thousands on a new floor, spend a few hundred to keep it in tip top shape 👍
