Bob Denver: Gilligan, Maynard & Me [Signed].

Floridly SIGNED in full & briefly INSCRIBED by Bob Denver in black marker on half-title page: "Hi Peter! Bob Denver - Gilligan".

Illustrated with numerous b&w photographs throughout. Published by Carol Publishing Group, New York, 1993. First printing, with "1" as the lowest number in print number line on copyright page.

From rear cover: "In Gilligan, Maynard & Me, Bob Denver takes us backstage and behind the scenes of Dobie Gillis and Gilligan's Island, two of the most popular shows in television history. Writing in a remarkably friendly and affable style, Denver tells what it was like to be plucked from complete obscurity to portray America's most celebrated beatnik, Maynard G. Krebs, and then to become Gilligan, the world's favorite stranded castaway. Containing hundreds of stories about the cast and crews of Denver's various shows, Gilligan, Maynard & Me also provides a genial insider's view of how Hollywood and television work: the way pilots and series are created; his relationships with Max Schulman of Dobie Gillis and Sherwood Schwartz of Gilligan's Island; the task of casting the skipper, the millionaire (and his wife), the movie star, the professor and Mary Ann; the decisions and antics of studio and network executives which turned out to be far wackier than anything ever staged for a sitcom. A must for all baby boomers and show-biz buffs, Gilligan, Maynard & Me is sure to put a smile on the face of anyone who's ever relished the outrageous antics and self-deprecating slapstick of that television original, Bob Denver".

Did a book presentation yesterday for Probus Club in Keilor East. The topic was my book “And That Was Only the Front Counter: Working in the Used Book Business in Los Angeles”, from which I read portions.

A screen behind me showed images of the mess and mayhem, and an old boombox playing jazz (Lester Young quintet) replicated the atmosphere of the bookshop.

The appreciative audience seemed interested, a few smiling faces, and I even sold some copies of my book. Win-win.

Pictured with Jan Williams, Probus Group Committee (and who happens to be my lovely cousin!).

At State Library Victoria last night where I gave a talk to the Book Collectors Society of Australia. The topic was my book, “And That Was Only the Front Counter: Working in the Used Book Business in Los Angeles”. It was interesting in that State Library Victoria, when cataloguing my book, put a warning on it, suggesting it “may be offensive or distressing”. There were librarians from the State Library in attendance last night, and we discussed those fascinating notorious and nefarious bibliophilic subjects such as warning labels, censorship, book banning, and book burning.

Photos from Bookwood's post 15/03/2024

…And then there was the time I got a phone call: “We have a house full of books, come and take what you want, make us an offer, don’t make us an offer, we just need somebody to haul away a bunch of books, are you the guy for the job” …I was!

I love it when people send me photos of my book with themselves or their family. Just received this one from somebody in Dade City (Florida) of my book pictured with their baby!

…And then there was the time that a local bookshop was going out of business (in this case Brown & Bunting Bookshop in Northcote), and they said come and box up what you want, we’ll do you a deal, make us an offer…I did.
