Cosy Home Care

Our mission is to enable people with disabilities to live as independently as possible.

14/06/2023

A significant proportion of disability housing in Australia is outdated and fails to foster independence. In some cases, group homes may provide residents with limited say over their living arrangements, resulting in social isolation and limited opportunities for engagement with the community. Adequate housing is a fundamental human right, and the introduction of Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) and Supported Independent Living (SIL) has paved the way for contemporary housing options that promote autonomy and independence.

Our Vision: To build a community that is inclusive and accessible.

07/06/2023

Our Mission: To enable people with disabilities to live as independently as possible by providing supportive services in a place that feels like home. We are committed to promoting autonomy and fostering opportunities for our clients to pursue their goals and aspirations.

Our Values: Integrity, Empowerment, Respect

Reminder: Exercise your right to choose where you want to live.

We understand it's not that simple - there's eligibility requirements and funding, housing availability and location and overall a lot to consider... but you should be able to choose the way you live. Although SDA and SIL are somewhat new, there are real people with a disability living in their own property with the right level of supports.

If SDA or SIL is something you'd like to learn more about, talk to our team member Mary at 03 9457 5968 or email [email protected]

What's covered under SIL and what's not?

SIL (Supported Independent Living) is daily support to help you be independent and learn new skills. People may get confused between SIL and SDA but SIL is about the supports provided (such as assistance with cooking and meal prep) whereas SDA is the physical home itself.

While this list isn't exhaustive and each person's situation is different, this aims to be a guide if what generally is and is not covered under SIL funding.

How to get SDA funding in your NDIS Plan

1. Talk to other people in SDA to find out if its the right path for you
2. Eligibility: to get SDA payments in your plan the NDIS has to decide that you are eligible. They've said that following people are eligible for SDA:
People with an extreme functional impairment
People with very high support needs
3. It helps to gave a good support coordinator to show the NDIS that you have either extreme functional impairment or high support needs. Pick the one that most applies to you and explain it really well.
4. Be sure to list "live as independently as possible" as one of the goals in your NDIS plan. The NDIS must see that SDA payments are a reasonable and necessary way to support your goals.
5. It also helps to have a great OT (Occupational Therapist) who's familiar with SDA so they can write a report to show how living in SDA will help you reach your goals.
6. Lastly, submit your SDA application to the SDA panel and wait for a decision.

Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), a global event that shines a light on website experience and digital access and inclusion for people with disabilities.

Every user deserves a first-rate digital experience on the web. Someone with a disability must be able to experience web-based services, content and other digital products with the same successful outcome as those without disabilities. This awareness and commitment to inclusion is the goal of Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), a global event that shines a light on digital access and inclusion for people with disabilities.

At Cosy Home Care, we're committed to promoting digital inclusion on our part by:
- adding image descriptions to our social media captions for screen readers
- educating our staff on ways to create digital content that is accessible
- plans to make our website more accessible with options for greater colour contrast for vision impaired users, a simplified navigation and overall a more inclusive UX (user experience) and design.

Happy International Guide Dog Day! This year the message from Guide Dogs Australia reminds the public to "Talk to the Handler" or people behind the guide dogs and to brush up on proper etiquette around guide dogs such as not touching without permission. They even have their own fun gifs you can try out.
