Last Friday I was lucky enough to be a guest on one of my favourite podcasts, for the second time. I shared the mike with writer, host, and creator extraordinaire , and guru dermatologist Dr Mei Tam, super- derm Dr Laxmi Iyengar, and totally brilliant psychiatrist Dr Siu-Ying Kwok. It was an afternoon of thought sharing, learning and giggles discussing a very current, super-important topic 🤫 I will look forward to sharing details as soon as this episode goes live. Can you guess what the topic might be? …

Thank you to our volunteers heroes! So many of you give your time in the community in really valuable ways. I want to thank our wildlife rescue volunteers for all that they do. Last night, we came across an injured female Eastern grey kangaroo. The poor, darling roo was in a terrible way with blood coming out of one ear, and a huge gash in one leg. I tried a number of Wildlife rescue numbers before Jason from Surf Coast Wildlife rescue said, “stay there,” I’ll be there within 30 minutes. I sat in the field where the poor Roo was until he arrived. Not too close, as I didn’t want to add to her fear. Jason felt that she was in a bad way, and used a dart to tranquillise her so that she could be assessed. Once the Roo was asleep we could see that she had a severe head injury and the foreleg injury was beyond repair. The rescuer’s expert opinion was to euthanaise the kangaroo. This was performed quickly and in the kindest way. Without help, she may have suffered for hours before passing away.

The reason that I’m posting this story is to highlight the fact that wildlife rescue in Victoria is run by volunteers who selflessly give their time, and finances to help our native wildlife. When I asked Jason about his role, I was overwhelmed. This kind soul runs his own business in regional Victoria. Yesterday, he attended 5 Roos, who like our girl had been hit by cars. Each time, he had to leave work, travel significant distances, and sedate the animals so that he could safely assess them. Each dose of sedation costs $100, which he covers the cost of himself. A large male Roo required two doses to put him to sleep yesterday. This boy made it, and was saved by the local vets. Jason told me that over the Easter weekend, he and his colleagues have attended to 35 Roos hit by cars in the Surf Coast area and surrounds. 10 were females with joeys in their pouches- only two joeys survived.
We all have different preferences when it comes to which causes we support. Please drive carefully, and consider our furry, feathered and spiky friends on the roads, and offer your support to local charities if you can🦘Surfcoast Wildlife Rescue 0422048557 DM me for donation details

Last weekend at the Australasian College of Dermatologist Annual Scientific meeting. A mix of some work (speaking in a skincare debate, and on rosacea), lots of catching up with fabulous friends and colleagues, learning, and some dance floor time. The perfect combination!

Knocked off the Lorne Mountain to Surf run this morning. It was only 8km. But, it was the hilliest event I’ve ever run. I’ve done loads of half marathons and a single marathon in my day, and this challenged me more than any other event. I admit that I wasn’t particularly well prepared. But, I’m really grateful that the old body kept on running. This was the best running event that I’ve ever done. So many locals in Lorne either ran or helped with the day to raise funds for local surf club. It was just amazing. As you can see from the beetroot shade of my face at the end, I was relieved to finish🤣🤣🤣

Happy 2023 everyone! Wishing you happiness, health and light this year. Feeling blessed to hit the trails for a run this morning in preparation for a trail running event coming up. The stunning coastal views made the hills and tired legs worth it. What are you looking forward to in 2023?

As a dermatologist, I’m constantly learning. Teaching and presenting is also something I get so much joy from. Had a fabulous time this week on a panel with the inspiring and brilliant at “ The Future is Clear” run by Australia discussing new treatment options in psoriasis. It was such a stimulating evening discussing the complexities of treating all aspects of psoriasis. Hopefully, we’ll have yet another treatment option available to treat moderate-severe psoriasis in Australia before too long

That’s a wrap on another day full of high quality presentations, discussions, and banter! I feel so privileged to have been part of the Australasian Medical Dermatology special interest group from its inception 8 years ago. Our modus operandi is to look at the literature around challenging areas in medical dermatology, and create publications to help decipher these complex areas for an Australasian environment. This year we tackled all things rosacea and perorificial dermatitis . It was a lot for one Saturday! I tackled the role of skincare and cosmeceuticals. I look forward to sharing our publication down the track

Bioremodelling is in da house ! I don’t normally manage to squeeze in so many treatments in my life. But, what a lucky month I’ve had! Last night I was lucky enough to be trained (and treated!) by in injecting technique for the new bioremodelling hyaluronic acid agent which has Australian aesthetics abuzz. I then got to return the favour. This new technology is super exciting

Come with me on my journey post Alma hybrid/fractionated CO2 laser. I was lucky enough to be treated by a week ago, and the recovery after this resurfacing treatment has blown my mind- because it was so easy! I was treated with fractionated CO2 around my eyes and mouth, and 1570nm on the rest of my face.Photos are from days 1,2,3,5 and 7. Please excuse the dreadful selfies and hair that desperately needs the. regrowth attended to!🤣
I can’t wait to share my results from this procedure with you all in 3 months.

The benefits of cosmeceuticals in terms of skin health and rejuvenation are a favourite topic of mine. So, I was, of course, delighted to be invited to contribute to the journal, Opinions and Progress in Cosmetic Dermatology, on the subject "Cosmeceuticals to address cutaneous photoaging." Cosmeceuticals have a stand alone role in treating sun -induced skin aging. But, they also play very well with prescription treatments and procedures.

It was absolute bliss to be back learning (and socialising!) face to face at the ASCD symposium. Gosh I missed these great people. Apparently, we’re all rather fond of a photo wall

So excited to chair the skincare and final plenary sessions today on day 3 of the ASCD symposium. We had a fabulous interactive panel looking at different approaches to some of our common presentations in cosmetic dermatology. There was a huge focus on skin quality, which is an area of personal interest, and something we’ll be hearing lots more about. The true highlight of this meeting for me was introducing a luminary in dermatology, Dr Zoe Draelos, whose pioneering work has had a huge influence on me personally

Seriously, the talent of this amazing woman, . She is a master creative. As dermatologists we have so much to learn from her. Many of the techniques used in aesthetics to shape cheeks in particular with dermal fillers come from her insights and observations. Here she is teaching us this evening how to perfect a glam look for a big night out. Her tips are pure gold

Round up of my favourite learnings from two days of the Australasian Society of Cosmetic Dermatologists annual scientific conference. We’ve seen a plethora of world class speakers talk all things lasers, energy-based devices and injectables. Tomorrow I’m up on skincare ☺️

Inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis are one of my main interests in addition to skincare. Recently, I’ve noticed numerous social media and news publication posts regarding avoidance of moisturisers and “no moisturiser therapy” as therapeutic options for eczema. I strongly believe that “knowledge is power.” So, I wanted to provide an alternative (dermatologist) view to these posts. I also wanted to reinforce that in 2022, dermatologists can offer many other treatments other than topical steroids (including safe, highly effective injectable treatments) for severe atopic dermatitis.

I recently caught up with the fabulous at a event . Stephanie is a legend of the beauty industry, and if she doesn’t talk about it, it’s probably not worth knowing! What is even better is that she has documented her knowledge and love of all things beauty in a witty and riveting book which includes beauty tips for all ages. And, readers even get a sneak peak into the world of beauty and luxury magazines. My copy arrived last night, and I haven’t put it down. I highly recommend

Today is World Skin Health day, a timely reminder that if you suffer from a hair, skin or nail condition that is affecting your quality of life (no matter how big or small), we are here to help.

Some of you may know that I suffer from CSU (chronic spontaneous urticaria) and have for a long time. Understanding and being able to help others with the same or similar conditions is strongly linked to my “why” of becoming a dermatologist. Urticaria is a really unpredictable condition because it can often involve the face and lead to significant disfigurement. It can be really socially embarrassing, and sometimes if I was having a really bad flare up, I would feel forced to stay home and cancel plans.

To anyone suffering from a skin condition that is impacting their quality of life; I see you. Please reach out to a Dermatologist ASAP because once you’re on an effective treatment plan, you’ll only wish you’d done it sooner.
