From people to people.

Sharing with you today are a few snaps from my recent field work in Sri Lanka inspecting rough gemstones, something I thoroughly enjoy.

Connecting with passionate people has been the most rewarding aspect of my role as a gem merchant since the establishment of Deliqa Gems in 2012. Growing up in Sri Lanka and speaking the language, I find immense joy in engaging with people.

Despite being the only female each time I have visited this predominantly male operated gem marketplace, I am warmly welcomed by the friendly community. It is always a pleasure to surprise acquaintances during my visits.

Even though traders carry hundreds of thousands of dollars of gemstones, there’s a mutual trust that safeguards everyone here.

While I’m not physically present, my dedicated team visits the gem market early morning almost everyday, establishing lasting relationships and trust while inspecting the findings from mines from the previous day.

This allows us to stay connected and stimulate the economy of the small scale traders.

Furthermore, our sapphires are cut by artisanal gem cutters in Sri Lanka, some of the best gem cutters in the world.

Sri Lanka has been the only country in the world that has been producing gemstones for around 2,000 years and still finding new gems everyday. It is rather phenomenal.
A protected local industry, exportation of rough gemstones and foreign ownership of mining is prohibited in order to maximise the value for local economy.

It is essential that I emphasise me and my team’s admiration for all qualities of natural sapphires and other gemstones, though we specifically curate the finest natural sapphires for our valued clients. Every unearthed gem deserves admiration and appreciation.

It’s a dream working in this age-old industry, connecting with some amazing people all the while bringing you magnificent natural sapphires to admire now and in the future.
