Possibly the pick of the decade! Reflections from winemaker Rollo on Vintage 2021... "If the last few vintages have been good (and they have!) then 2021 could easily be classified as the pick of the decade. A cool summer with above average rainfall initially gave cause for concern with disease pressure being at its highest in many years. I am, however, happy to report that through rigorous canopy management and excellent vine health (due to our fastidious soil management regime) we managed to avoid any botrytis & mildew outbreaks and all of our fruit came into the winery in top condition. The moderate weather conditions also allowed for a prolonged ripening season with most reds developing amazing structure & depth of colour, while the whites retained vibrant acidity and an elegance that will provide age-ability for many years to come. With yields being adequate if not bountiful this is certainly a year to remember!"

And on to the annual task of spreading compost in our vineyard. We make it each year using the pressed out grape skins and seeds from the winery, local horse manure and straw. Next step is sewing our winter cover crop of oats and peas to help fix nitrogen and add carbon to the soil...

No, this isn't steam..
It was hot last week, but no this isn't steam... It's actually whole bunch fruit in dry ice (which is frozen CO2). It helps to purge out unwanted oxygen and also helps cool the grapes down; something we definitely needed to do in last weeks 37 degree heat!

One of our sustainable initiatives...
As farmers, looking after our environment is at the bedrock of everything we do. So it’s a natural progression for us that as part of our sustainable initiatives, we recently had installed solar panels on both our Wine Centre and winery buildings The power generated almost, but not quite, meets our energy needs A great way to make a small difference 👍

What a day we had! Today we were excited and honoured to be the first to kick off @officialmorningtonpeninsula pop up event series #3farmersandachef We were one of the 3 farmers in the amazing company of @torellofarm and @hawkes_vegetables @chef_michaelcole what you created with your team today was incredible, thank you 🙏🏼 To everyone who came, we hope you enjoyed the day, the food and wine, the sunshine and company as much as we did. What a day! 😍

Hello, Garry Crittenden here...
Hello there, Garry Crittenden here In 2007 Crittenden family wines decided to abandon the use of artificial fertilisers in the vineyard and return to the agricultural ways of our forefathers. Since time immemorial up until the first half of the 20th century, composts and animal manures were the primary source of farm fertiliser. This is what we now think of as “biological farming”. We made our first batch of compost in 2007 and have done so every year since. Typically today our compost heap measures 500 cubic metres or the equivalent of 50 full tip trucks. In fact to achieve that volume we are now taking the spent grapes from other Mornington Peninsula wineries and in so doing avoiding the dumping of more than 1000 cubic metres (yes that’s right, 1000!) of totally recyclable plant material into land fill…………. Just an added bonus we think, ask Craig Reucassel from the War on Waste. I firmly believe that the combination of Rollo’s winemaking prowess and our compost in the vineyard adventures can jointly take the credit for James Halliday giving us the appellation in his just released Wine Companion as “the best of the best” and producers of consistently outstanding quality wines. I now invite you to click on the video above that tells our story. Kind regards Garry Crittenden
